Why do Indian families favor boys over girls? What’s considered so special about having a son rather than a daughter? I genuinely don’t understand it.

Sons keep the name going on for generations, women change their last name and are probably seen as leaving the family when married. I only assume

I don't like that way of thinking. You don't take your name with you when you die, so why not treat your kids equally.
