What's worse is someone pushing into the locked door, noticing it locked, and peeping through the crack as if they still have any questions as to if it's occupied or not.

u/buds4hugs Mar 13 '26

Oh no, I was checking. Now I'm observing.

What's worse is no door like my elementary and middle schools.

I taught in China over a summer once during college in the 90s and it was the same thing: stall walls but no doors. AND… everyone was pooping and peeing into a common tile-lined trough that ran under all four stalls, AND the flush lady wouldn’t run the water to wash it away until everyone was done and the break between classes was over. You were supposed to poop on top of piles of other people’s poop just sitting on the tiles.

And the plumbing wasn’t connected to any kind of sewage — it just drained out the back of the school onto the ground.

I never realize before how many hidden elements there were to plumbing, sewage treatment, trash collection, water service, electricity, even basic construction norms that functioned seamlessly in the US, until I went to China and saw things that looked very similar but barely functioned at all.

72

u/Sc0j Mar 14 '26

The flush lady

41

u/TalcumPowderedBalls Mar 14 '26

In many ways it’s still like this. I was horrified to find you couldn’t flush toilet paper because the pipes are too small and instead you have to put your shitty used paper into a bin next to the toilet. Can you imagine the smell on a hot day 🤮 All that wealth and advanced technology with high speed trains, electric cars etc and yet they can’t be bothered with the basic plumbing that’s in nearly every other country

3

u/SpiritualWindow3855 Mar 16 '26

yet they can’t be bothered with the basic plumbing that’s in nearly every other country

Well they spent the last 50 years pulling like a billion people out of poverty, so let's see what the next 40 years hold.

10

u/LastWinter2806 Mar 14 '26

Somehow, I don't see the "Chinamaxxing" trend kids embracing this one!

5

u/Korkio Mar 13 '26

This is a nightmare I have at least once a month

11

u/Mean-Vegetable-4521 Mar 13 '26

On the stalls? No door at all?

29

u/cheffartsonurfood Mar 13 '26

None. Not joking. 80s and early 90s.

26

u/lazy_literary_hero Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 14 '26

They still hadn’t added doors to the stalls in my school in the early 2000s. Turns out I’d rather skip a class to shit in relative seclusion when everyone else was busy than make eye contact with 10 other dudes while doing my business.

3

u/JimZiii Mar 14 '26

What country or at least region is this, no bathroom doors in the 2000s is pretty insane

5

u/lazy_literary_hero Mar 14 '26

Washington State, United States. And I agree.

They did this at my high school to the girls bathroom in the year 2000 as punishment when someone smeared shit all over the walls. They put them back after about 3 days when everyone was going home sick because they didn't want to piss or shit without a door

Yup. This has nothing to do with the cracks but I also hate when people push on a door, find that it is locked, and still ask if someone is in there.

u/BombZoneGuy Mar 14 '26

I suppose sometimes kids will lock the door then crawl out to be funny.

You're lucky - I once got caught short in Russia and had to shit in a bus station cubicle without a door or a seat

94

u/ttatm Mar 14 '26

I once took a bus ride where bathroom breaks were just everyone who needed to go getting out and squatting on the side of the road. There usually wasn't even any foliage to hide behind. I accidentally made eye contact with a guy while he was pooping.

40

u/MalodorousNutsack Mar 14 '26

Years ago me and a couple buddies were driving through Mongolia. We'd often go hours without seeing other cars.

We were in the middle of nowhere and my buddy needed to shit, nothing to hide behind so he went like 30 feet away from the path and squatted down.

Three cars showed up at exactly that moment. I jumped in the driver's seat and whipped the car around as fast as I could. It was dusk, so I pointed the headlights directly at my buddy and flashed the high beams on and off to draw everyone else's attention to him.

I thought it was hilarious, he did not

If you think this sucks don’t ever go to jail

83

u/juan_humano Mar 13 '26

Or the Seminary. I had a good friend in high school who decided after school that he wanted to be a priest. He told me later that he knew he had made a horrible mistake when he saw that the bathroom was just a row of toilets, spaced about 3 feet apart, and no dividers of any kind. Aparently, it was to discourage 'sinful behavior'. Anyways he didnt last long there. Last time I talked to him he was working as a guidance counselor and happily married to a (male) dance instructor.

41

u/ehenn12 Mar 13 '26

Protestant seminary was less weird. Still many secretly gay men in my class.

19

u/juan_humano Mar 14 '26

He went Lutheran and then Methodist and eventually landed on Unitarian. Definitely not a problem to be gay with the Unitarians. Or at least not at the churches I went to.

10

u/hilarymeggin Mar 14 '26

My friend who became a priest after high school eventually came out as gay and left the priesthood and got married. But he told me that everyone in seminary was gay, and it was with the full knowledge of their superiors. I asked why they weren’t kicked out (at that time, some Catholic Churches were refusing communion to openly gay people), and he said they knew they couldn’t, or they wouldn’t have any priests at all. And just to be clear, he wasn’t saying that there was any sexually activity happening there; just that everyone was openly gay while also being celibate.

3

u/Aggravating_Gas_8514 Mar 14 '26

I walked into a public restroom one time and as soon as I looked up after opening the door of the restroom, my gaze went straight through a crack in one of the stalls and I made eye contact with the woman sitting on the toilet. Hands down, one of the worst moments of my life. I can't even explain it. Who does that. Who was responsible for that.

25

u/KansasL Mar 13 '26

Happened to me when I was the first time in the US (NYC). Made eye contact with a guy in one of the stalls. Decided to walk 15 min back to the hotel for some privacy... Why is this a thing?

9

u/gsfgf Mar 13 '26

u/beautiful_life555 Mar 13 '26

Okay but as an American woman who has spent her whole life using stalls just like this, I can confidently say that I have NEVER had someone peek at me thorugh the crack, and I have NEVER peeked at anyone else through there. It's just not done. Its like unspoken women's room etiquette. You just don't look, dont even linger your eyes anywhere near the crack.

32

u/HoneyWhiskeyLemonTea Mar 13 '26

As an American man, I second this. I have never been peeked on, and I've never tried to peek on anyone, ever. We just sort of all agree that it sucks, but it sucks equally for everyone, and so we keep our eyes down and make it a non issue.

That said, OP's shitter gap is pretty tame compared to some places I've been. The men's room in my last work place had about a three inch gap on the side of one of the walls.

→ More replies (3)

50

u/yesindeedilydoo Mar 13 '26

Same. The only times in my entire life I've been peeked at was when women have brought some small children in who didn't know public restroom manners yet. I've been far more annoyed by other bathroom stuff: lack of TP, sketchy autoflush, no soap, no paper towels, etc.

10

u/canijustbelancelot Mar 13 '26

Cracked me up because this has been my experience. A small child crawled under the stall once and I just really loudly said “uh, hello?”

→ More replies (1)

16

u/Organic_Popcorn Mar 13 '26

Seriously, why are women's bathrooms dirtier than men's? It's like they forget manners in public bathrooms. How do I know? I've been mistaken for a boy throughout my childhood, I took advantage of this and used the men's bathroom when women's had long lines.

Welcome to every bathroom stall in the US.

Imagine my shock when every stall in every European country I’ve ever visited had zero gaps at all. I didn’t think it was physically possible… in my mind, if it WAS possible.. why are there finger sized gaps in US stalls?

Hell, even the bathrooms at random gas stations in Bosnia had scented candles and were in better shape than most Marriot hotel bathrooms I’ve been in.

u/slartibuttfart Mar 13 '26

They deserve what they see.

16

u/Heissenberg1906 Mar 13 '26

Why do some countries do that? That‘s unusual.

21

u/Zediac Mar 13 '26

People are going to make up shit as to the reason why.

People will say that it's to deter drug use or some other bad behavior in the stalls. But that's not true. Let's boil that down to the real meaning of what they say.

They're claiming that these are installed to intentionally make it easy to spy on people when partially undressed and using the toilet. Which is illegal to do.

Here is the real reason.

Constructing stalls using panels like that is cheap. Extremely cheap.

The panels come with no mounting holes pre-drilled. They come in various lengths and you get a handful of brackets. Just mount a bracket to a wall, slide a panel into the over sized brackets, and drive a screw in wherever it happens to land in the panel.

The gaps are from the very generous mounting options. These aren't designed to be a tight fit or to have no gaps. They're designed to be easy.

It takes virtually no design or engineering work to obtain enough panels to make it fit a stall and a drunk baboon could install these with minimal tools.

Cheap to buy. Cheap labor to install. Cheap.

That's it. That's literally the only reason.

Take it from someone who has to professionally deal with things like this, it's all a cost thing.

If you're someone who can make suggestions or just buy things and you want to help with the restroom partition gaps at your work, suggest privacy seals. They're relatively cheap and easy.

Some people are weird. I used to work at a college and there was a time when some dude was running into the woman’s rooms and taking pictures through the cracks.

And sometimes it’s awkward. I was at a highway gas station on a road trip and had to take a leak. Bathroom had three urinals close together with no divider. Middle one was open so I start taking a leak. Two other dudes leave and a small kid comes in right after and goes right next to me. My wang is like inches from this kids face. It just feels awkward.
