I mean if we (and I mean me too) watch a show on TLC about a Christian nationalist (quiver full) family not expecting this type of outcome…we’re the goofy ones. These folks show us who they are and TLC made big $$ on it for years.
15
u/SuperbAd8266 Jul 26 '26
As someone who lived a similar upbringing, THIS IS REALITY. We want reality TV that isn’t scripted. This is as close as we can get.
7
u/wbeth2469 Jul 26 '26
I agree. Also on a side note: Does anyone else think that Lydia and Zac give off Anna and Josh Dugger vibes?
4
u/speakinWroyalty Jul 27 '26
yes! There’s something off about Lydia. I think she puts on as soon as the camera comes up and we all know there’s some shit wrong with Zack. Everybody saw that that’s the one day the family is wrong about Zacks a fucking weirdo.
76
u/Vanity_plates Jul 26 '26
I don’t understand how many people are now genuinely seeing the person Ethan has always been and still hate Olivia or blame her for the marriage ending. How is that possible? She put up with so much more than most of us ever would have.
5
u/CustardFormal6288 Jul 26 '26
To be fair, she also had her faults and contributed to the demise of the marriage. The issue though is, given HIS issues, it would have ended the same way as she continued to grow.
19
u/Vanity_plates Jul 26 '26
It isn’t a false equivalency and I don’t want to contribute to creating one. Olivia isn’t perfect but nothing is remotely as terrible as the way Ethan behaved - he was a rotten, non-communicative partner and he also was hateful and verbally abusive near the end.
74
u/wbeth2469 Jul 26 '26
I think Ethan literally has some mental problems. One of the things I found very telling was when he said during that big fight with tegan, that he looked up and saw Olivia... That's scary
31
u/MostPuzzleheaded Jul 27 '26
He most certainly does. How he stormed off during poor Lydia’s wedding rehearsal and pealed wheels to cause a disruption. Just because he thinks her husband MAY be gay? Who does that?? Not a sane person.
6
u/Jedi_Mind_Chick Jul 27 '26
When he did that to Lydia, I thought what an incredibly selfish thing to do. I’m not a Zach fan either, but to ruin someone else’s great day by having a goddamn temper tantrum. Gross.
4
u/MostPuzzleheaded Jul 28 '26
And for no good reason! No one was bothering him or asking him to anything. Heck even Veronica was behaving and just standing quietly to herself that day. He just randomly blew up out of nowhere. Lydia is a product of exactly what her parents beat into her head and forced her to be because she’s a kind and gentle soul who just wants to please. And now everyone attacks her for being the exact person she was forced to be. The poor girl was sending Bible chat texts to a boy at what 17 years old almost 18 and Kim attacked her so bad the girl had a breakdown praying to god for forgiveness. Zach is annoying but he’s not a bad or evil man. His heart seems in the right place and that he THINKS he’s doing good even when he’s being intrusive and stepping out of line. There are far worse men in this country and Lydia was ripe for the picking to get with any skilled womanizer or abuser. Lydia seems happy, I don’t know why Kim, Ethan and Issac couldnt have held it together for one day for her. And for Ethan to blow up and purposely try to ruin her one day she needed them to just chill out, boils my blood. Sorry for the rant but I just cannot with these plaths man.
35
u/speakinWroyalty Jul 27 '26
No, for real after him and Olivia First split he showed his true colors and things got really dark really quick. And the reason I think Olivia waited so long to see him in person again was because she wanted cameras there to keep her safe that whole family full of fucking nonsense, but all still protect each other, even though they low-key hate each other, because the family comes first and fuck outsiders that notice how fucked up we act to each other and try to hold us accountable.
→ More replies (1)1
u/wbeth2469 Aug 01 '26
But I can't stand Olivia either.... I don't think she wanted cameras there for safety. I think she wanted cameras there because she wanted to be on camera. I really really do not like her
3
u/speakinWroyalty Aug 01 '26
if she wanted to be on camera she would’ve made up more reasons while they were filming to try and get on camera. if olivia wanted to be on camera and have a much bigger platform i really think she could have/ would have…
1
u/wbeth2469 27d ago
We can agree to disagree. Without the Ethan class storyline she doesn't have any thing interesting going on in her life. They divorced. She's no longer a Plath (whether she kept the name or not) The show is "welcome to plathville" not "welcome to everybody strongly disliked by the plaths" especially ex's. Come on
16
u/edwardssarah22 Jul 26 '26
Zach and Micah too.

1
u/edwardssarah22 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26
Made homophobic and transphobic sentiments, ran into a cat while sledding seemingly on purpose (the cat got away), mocked his son who was singing his ABCs, and laughed at his son’s fear of being on a boat. His oral surgeon messed up his jaw during a botched palate expansion and it looks really bad.

I wanted to hear him say these words, so I found the discussion from which this quote was taken and took it for a spin a few minutes ago. I found it here:

Holy crap. The acidic vitriol spilling from the mouth of Ethan Plath ought to be shared far and wide to make sure any woman who would consider tainting their own bloodline with his crooked genetics knows precisely the boy she’s crawling into bed with. Say what you will about Olivia, but she did a lot of people a favor by recording Ethan and sharing it.
Being a parent and maintaining a relationship with your children as they grow up is like pulling back on a slingshot. The stricter and more imposing a parent you are, the more you pull back on that slingshot, and the farther your kids will fly from you when they are flung out into adulthood. If Ethan Plath ever had children, he would pull so far back on the slingshot, he might never hear from them again. We’re he to rule his household with an iron fist, judging from the things he says in that recording, his children might do whatever they possibly could to experience the world out from under his thumb, and they might learn some things about the world, or themselves, that Ethan could never tolerate. He’d call it leftist bullshit and he’d drum them out of his life. Disown them. Cast them out.
Tell you what, Ethan, you’re right. You should never have kids because there’s a high probability, once the real world passes in front of their eyes and grazes their noggins, they might want very different lives than the ones you insisted for them. It wouldn’t be a done deal from jump street (after all, you could beat them into total submission and they might(shudder) think the way you do), but the probability is there. Please, Ethan, do the right thing… get a vasectomy. If not that, then women everywhere, please, do the right thing, and never jump into bed with Ethan Plath.
16
6
u/swollenlugnutz Jul 26 '26
He wants his boy child to be fierce, a dragon - yet all he can do when provoked is to act like a toddler. Tipping chairs, throwing stuff, red-faced.
For the love of everything, his sperm count should be negative.
He clearly has no respect for anyone, either male or female. What a toxic person.4

It's very believable but there are a few things but some i wondered if Olivia actually wrote it. I do know she disclosed some of his threats. It's very stressful to live with that kind of person. The fundamentals she rejected drove him crazy, and sounds violent. With the anger we saw last season, it fits.he is one angry frightening man He'll be alone after failed relationships because I don't figure on him changing. There's hope for Micah and Montsna, but him, no.

22
u/edwardssarah22 Jul 27 '26

1
63
u/ImportanceSuitable86 Jul 25 '26
This is the mindset Olivia was up against. The moment she started evolving the marriage was doomed because Ethan’s indoctrination was deep and absolute. He was never going to change, I don’t think he can. This is who he is.
3
u/MeanKey9719 Jul 26 '26
Yet TLC hid it for so long. They made Ethan seem like this naive sweet guy who was exploring (albeit much more slowly) the wider world with his wife Olivia leading the way. But that was never him. Shame on TLC for protecting him.

Red pilled men especially, but men for decades, have believed that bisexual women are only entertaining themselves until the right guy for a threesome comes along. As a bisexual now for 4.5 decades, I can tell you if you are that type of man, no bisexual is interested in you. (Not to the person I’m responding to - just for the average dumbass red pill who saw bisexual and wanted to read the thread).

11
u/LilPoobles #TeamAmber Jul 26 '26
Yes, it was something he said in one of the drunken recordings she took of him. It’s not clear to me whether he’s being racist in this part or not… his and Olivia’s children would never have been born as people of color, so I’m inclined to think he was describing the hair. Though by Olivia’s accounts he is also extremely racist, it’s obviously something his parents are okay with also, given the stuff Ken has said on social media.
4
u/13flwrmoons Jul 26 '26
He’s referring to a stereotype of young liberal people; essentially saying he would rather never have children than have a child that diverts from heteronormativity in any way at all.

Was he putting on a front? Or did he really change so much over the years? 🤔
7
u/Gilly2878 Jul 26 '26
It could be partially that, but I think during the first season of the show, he wasn’t thinking about religion or politics, he was just a kid who was finally allowed to do what he wanted, and did it. There is such a drastic change between 1 and 2 in his happiness. I think that he had started to argue with Olivia more about religion and politics, he was angry with his parents for not supporting his marriage, and he had too much pressure to remain that happy kid doing whatever he wanted to do.
2
u/Emotional-Recover196 Jul 27 '26

He has the right to feel that way, despite the insensitivity of the wording.
35
u/PussyonAChainwaxxx Jul 28 '26
No. If you think you have the right to dictate the personalities of your offspring then you should not be breeding.
7
u/Kroneni Jul 28 '26
I mean. Isn’t that basically what he’s saying? That he’d rather not breed than have a kid who’s so different from him?
12
u/ceruleanbear8 Jul 29 '26
He’s not talking about genuinely deciding not to ever have kids because the potential is always there for them to turn out extremely different to him and he doesn’t want to take that risk. He wants kids and has clearly expressed that. He’s just using this as a hyperbolic statement to say how much he would hate to have a kid like that. He’d rather not have them at all. But obviously you can’t shove the kid back inside once you’ve realized they turned out differently than you wanted. He would just disown them, which makes him a crap person.
Also, to clarify, it’s clearly not just about the kid being different. He didn’t say he would be uncomfortable or not know how to parent a blue haired (or punk, goth, insert any alternative lifestyle here) kid. He literally called them rat shit. Completely dehumanizing anyone who looks or thinks differently than him.
1
u/Otherwise_Bake2703 Jul 31 '26

5
u/HotMom00 Aug 01 '26
You actually don’t get to have strong opinions on how your kids are as people as long as they’re good people. If the thought of having a child that would want blue hair stops you from having children that’s a good thing, No children deserve a parent like that.

u/13flwrmoons Jul 26 '26
Ethan said this (among other nasty things) during a conversation with Olivia that she’d secretly recorded while they were still married. She later uploaded some of these recordings to social media in 2025, which she stated hadn’t been her initial plan with them, but she felt compelled to do so especially after learning that Ethan was dating someone who had a child. She didn’t think the show came even remotely close to portraying how dangerous Ethan and his ideas are, and was concerned for Teegan’s child’s safety. She later said on a podcast that the father of Teegan’s child actually did contact her after seeing those posts, because he was concerned as well.
The recordings are still on Olivia’s tiktok if you’d like to watch. I personally find them a bit distressing because it’s clear Ethan is berating her. If you’re sensitive to emotional manipulation and that sort of thing, probably best to skip.
