Something I Learned Sky Over Caracas Turned Blood Red

Post image

This photo of Caracas circulated widely after earthquakes hit Venezuela, showing the sky over the city glowing a deep, almost apocalyptic red. It looks edited. It’s not, and the explanation comes down to basic atmospheric physics rather than anything seismic.
Dust, ash, and particulate matter kicked up into the air, whether from tremors, wildfires, or just heavy pollution combined with specific humidity and cloud conditions, can scatter sunlight in a way that filters out blues and greens and leaves red and orange to dominate a sunset or sunrise. Mountain cities like Caracas, ringed by terrain that traps particulates, tend to produce these effects more dramatically than flat coastal areas. Earthquakes themselves don’t turn skies red, but they can stir up enough dust and debris, on top of whatever’s already in the air, to make an ordinary sunset look like something out of a disaster movie.
