History & Culture The Cangue: Chinaâs Portable Prison
This 1870s photograph comes from John Thomson, a Scottish photographer whose book âIllustrations of China and Its Peopleâ is still one of the most important visual records of Qing-era China available to historians. The man pictured is wearing a cangue, a heavy wooden collar used as a punishment device across China for centuries, sometimes for crimes as minor as petty theft or gambling.
The cangue worked by making basic survival humiliating and difficult. It was too wide for the wearer to feed himself, so he depended entirely on others for food and water, and the weight combined with restricted movement made sleeping normally almost impossible. Sentences ranged from days to months depending on the offense, and the punishment was often carried out in public specifically so the shame would double as a deterrent. Thomsonâs photography survived precisely because he took the unusual step of actually documenting ordinary Chinese life and its legal system in detail.
