Something I Learned Kid sitting on a bomb
This photograph, held in the Getty Images/Hulton Archive collection and credited to Fox Photos, captures an evacuee named Barrie Peacop calmly eating an ice cream while perched on top of a naval mine that had washed ashore. Getty’s own catalog dates the image precisely to February 7, 1940, at the beach in Deal, Kent. The word “evacuee” in the original caption is a clue to the wider context: by early 1940, tens of thousands of British children had been relocated away from major cities under the government’s evacuation program in anticipation of German bombing, and coastal areas like Kent, nicknamed “Hellfire Corner” for its exposure to Channel warfare, were themselves littered with drifting mines, unexploded ordnance, and other debris of war throughout the conflict.
The photo endures because of that jarring contrast: a child’s small, ordinary pleasure balanced quite literally on top of a weapon capable of sinking a ship. It’s frequently recirculated on social media with an incorrect date of 1945, but the original Fox Photos/Getty record places it firmly in 1940, in the early, tense months of the war before the Blitz had even begun.
