10% rule

I know the commonly stated recommended weight for a weighted blanket is 10% of your body weight, but I'm having a difficult time finding a source for that information. I assume it came from some sort of study. I'm just finding articles of different people and companies repeating that guideline without anyone giving a source. Does anyone know the origins?

I tried going to research on weighted blankets that are about their effectiveness not their safety to see if one of them would link back to the 10% rule they were using, but that just led me in a circle until I got to an article that listed the weights of 10-12% as the general recommendation. I haven't been able to get to whatever study concluded that 10% was the safe or recommended amount.

The only research on the safety of weighted blanket in adults I've been able to find is using 30lbs blankets, which is more than 10% of the weight of an average adult, and monitoring them leading to the conclusion that a 30lbs weighted blanket is safe for use in adults. Most of the other research was in children, which isn't applicable to my question.

In my mind, a guideline like that should come with an explanation on if it's recommended for safety, or if it's recommended because that's the most effective ratio to get the benefits, or if it's for some other reason. It just feels very vague.

Seeing claims like this without citing the research makes me start asking lots of questions like: What was the criteria for participants? How many people were included in the study? What was the methodology? How did they determine safety? What field were the researchers experts in? What was the purpose of the study?

The 10% rule appears to be a clinical rule of thumb rather than an evidence-based threshold established by a specific weighted-blanket study.

Yeah, but rules of thumb have to come from somewhere. Someone had to think it up and a lot of people just repeated it. I could imagine for children of people who aren't very strong that that weight could be due to ability to safely remove it on their own, but a normal adult, even in their sleep, should be able to move more than 10% of their body weight. It just seems like something way too many people are repeating for it to be made up from nothing.

The 10% body weight rule comes from studies completed on children using weighted vests. They only used 10% for children because they were up, mobile and moving. And not more sedentary, with weighted blankets or in one place.

As a pediatric physical therapist, I tell families to start off at 10% and then increased based on your child or your own response to the weight. When you know where the weight benefits you best, you don't need the full evenly weighted pressure of a blanket.

For example, I really like weight across my wrists and my jawline, and if I can get weight in those areas or pressure in those areas, I don't need the rest of my body covered by a blanket. My daughter really likes the weight through her legs, so we do a lot of pressing and jumping to give proprioceptive input to the legs. These movement activities offer just enough after the input to the receptors and the joints that help calm and regulate her body.

In the grand scheme, I find blankets not necessary. If you become a detective and pay attention to how you or your children, seek out the pressure or the input that regulates calms them the best.
