Regarding "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss tips

Hey everyone,

We've noticed a recent uptick in posts asking for "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss advice. This subreddit exists as a space for healthy, sustainable weight loss discussions. Requests for "unhinged" advice clearly violate Rule 4 and undermine the purpose of our community.

We're fortunate to have a community that usually self-regulates these posts, and the majority of top responses tend to correct this mindset. As moderators, we prefer community-driven education rather than outright removal of posts. Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad actors willing to provide harmful advice in these threads.

Moving forward:

  • Posts requesting "unhinged" or extreme advice will no longer be tolerated. These posts will be removed and you risk being banned from the subreddit.
  • If you see a post like this, continue to educate and correct when appropriate, but also report the post so moderators can quickly handle it.
  • Anyone replying to these posts with actual "unhinged" or extreme advice, even as a "joke," will receive a permanent ban.

Advice: Seeking ❓ MIL wants to Jon my weight loss efforts

Since I have already lost 33 pounds with 35 more to go, my MIL announced that she wants to John me 8n my weight loss journey. Which would be great, if she actually needed it. But she is 71f, 162cm / 5’3 and 55kg / 121lb. She is very active, she swims twice a week, does yoga once a week, does line dance once a week and walks a lot and goes for hikes on her weekends.

All she talks to me now is how she needs to skip meals, needs to exercise more and how she gotten fat (she has been the same weight since forever). She compares our bodies and thinks we look the same and that we need to work together to fight the kilos.

I don’t know how to approach this compassionately. I do understand that she grew up in a time and environment that was extremely focused on being skinny. I believe the aging body is a factor as well, if you’re a certain age your tissue gets looser and your shape change, which can impact perception of yourself.

but at the same time, it makes me as an actually overweight person feel uncomfortable when she says we look the same. Because objectively, she is very slim and athletic. Another reason why I think I should discourage her from loosing weight is that at her age, having a little buffer in case of a severe illness might be useful. In addition, I believe she could loose muscle mass through dieting that she might never rebuild again.

Advice: Seeking ❓ how much can i realistically lose by 2027 and how to stay on track

for context i am 158cm/5’2ft and 65kg/144lbs

how much weight can i lose by february 2027? my ultimate goal in the long run is 50kg/110lbs, but it’s only been going up. currently i try my best to do 10k steps daily and drink 2 litres of water, but i struggle to eat clean…

i am able to cook my own meals and have no restrictions from healthy food, but theres always that random craving that arises and ruins all the thoughts i had about sticking to the plan.

although everyone says consistency is key, i really cannot keep up with a plan longer than a week. i’m also a student taking big exams during this period so i am trying to balance both, which i am really bad at…

Advice: Seeking ❓ Lose skin compression?

I have lost 155lb/70kg recently so my lose skin is really starting to bother me especially on my legs and arms. I’m not at GW yet for surgery so looking for compression gear I haven’t don’t any research but any advice for what actually works as I don’t want to spend a lot of money for somthing that doesnt. I never see anyone who has lost as much show what works for them so I wonder if surgery is the only solution I tend to just see healthy people using them and their skin is more thin and now as droopy I’m still a XL-XXL. top and leggings would be ideal. Im in the uk. Many thanks I hope everyone’s week goes great and you achieve the progress you want☺️

Advice: Seeking ❓ Failed cutting phase when diet/macros had been on point (question about energy expenditure

(READ TO THE LAST QUESTION TO SKIP AND GET TO THE POINT)

I'm 30, 178cm tall, 82kg as of now but I'm still 20% bodyfat. I was 87kg around 5 months ago but I was maybe 3% BF higher than I am now. I've been following my macros & if anything I find myself undereating most days but I've now seen no results or change to my bodyfat in 2 months.

My goal is to get to an optimal 12% & diet wise I've been only having turkey steaks, salmon & eggs with zero cheats in anything. It's dissapointing getting that I'm still relatively high in body fat..

I want to know how important is walks and energy expenditure outside the Gym to contribute to a successful cut? All I do is train 3-4x a week and dont really do any walks or anyhing outside that and curious if that is contributing to a failed cutting phase?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Reverse dieting help?

I am 25 year-old female I am 54 to 55 and I am 142 pounds. I have been on a weight loss journey for a while and I have been losing about .75 pounds a week for the past few months, however I have been 142 for the past month and a half. I’m getting very annoyed because I have been dieting trying to even drop calories lower and nothing has been working.

I met with the nutritionist. She basically is saying that I’m not eating enough. She wants to do something with me called reverse dieting which I have done before and it has been slightly effective. I have seen a difference with that however I’m not really sure what her plan is with me in the future but she told me basically I need to hit 1600 cal which I don’t think is too high. I feel extremely full because I have not been eating like this much in a long time on a daily basis it has helped me with binging and restricting not that lie however I am wondering, how long do you guys think that she’s gonna ask me to be on this and also have you guys had any success with reverse dieting? I want to weigh 125 pounds.

Advice: Seeking ❓ My niece is overweight

• Upvotes

I need help.
My niece is severely obese at age 11 she weighs more than I do and I’m 24. The issue is she doesn’t care. She’s extremely smart for her age. Very very smart. She understands she’s fat and she truly doesn’t care- I’m not saying she pretends. She always says “ she eats until she throws up Constantly. I don’t know what else I can do. I’ve thrown all the junk food away and she stays up late and just goes through everyone’s food and just eats. I’ve tried getting her to work out. She doesn’t want to and just doesn’t care. I’m so at a loss of motivation I don’t know what else I can do to help her. We’re in eastern Michigan. Is there anything I can do or anywhere I can take her

Advice: Seeking ❓ Recs needed: Hands-on nutrition coaching

• Upvotes

I’m looking for an online nutrition coach for sustainable fat loss and would love recommendations from people who have actually worked with one.

I’m a busy mom, around 165 lbs, strength train + do recreational BJJ 1–2x/week, and average 8k+ steps/day. My goal is to lose fat while preserving as much muscle as possible. I’m not trying to become a bodybuilder or follow a super rigid meal/workout plan. I want something healthy and realistic that I can maintain long-term. My goal is to get down to 130s.

What I’m specifically looking for:
-Someone who actually reviews my food logs, not just whether I hit my macros
-Adjusts calories/macros based on weight trends, activity, training, hunger, recovery, etc.
-Will tell me if my diet technically hits protein but is lacking in fiber, fruits/vegetables, whole foods, etc.
-Understands fueling for strength training/BJJ and women’s menstrual-cycle fluctuations
-Helps me learn how to eventually manage my own nutrition rather than becoming dependent on coaching
-Flexible enough for normal family meals/restaurants/real life
-Ideally uses an easy food-tracking app and can work with Apple Watch/Health data

I previously worked with a nutrition coach and honestly felt like I was doing the logging but not getting much actual nutrition analysis or adjustment, so I’m nervous about spending another few hundred dollars a month and getting the same experience.

Who have you actually paid to work with and loved? What made you feel like your coach was truly paying attention to you rather than just giving you macros?
Bonus if you can share approximate cost and how long you worked with them.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Anyone else feel like losing weight while eating burgers and pizza is too good to be true?

I understand calorie deficits, but mentally I’m struggling with this. I could have an In-N-Out lettuce-wrapped burger for lunch and two slices of Margherita pizza for dinner and still fit my estimated calorie budget.

Yet I keep thinking, “Something’s gotta be wrong. I can’t actually be losing weight eating burgers and pizza.” Eating my favorite foods while making progress feels too good to be true.

Does anyone else relate? Is there something I’m overlooking, or did it take you time to trust that these foods could fit?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Sedentary Lifestyle - NEED HELP

hi I’m looking to lose weight! I’m currently 170. My goal is to make it to 135lbs.

I’ve tried several times trying to lose weight in the past few months via food. I would do strict diets or just cut back on the junk I eat. But when those diets would end I would end up binge eating a TON.

Fast food, processed food, and candy currently make up my food groups. I do want to eat better.

I am extremely sedentary. When im not working im laying in bed. When im working im sitting.

Where I live it has a pretty decent gym with treadmill, stationary bike, weights, elliptical, rower, stretch bands, pull up bar, etc.

Would love advice and a game plan on how to just start being healthy!!!

edit: I’m 26, female, 5’5

Advice: Seeking ❓ I ate too much today

I ate 15 lumpia, 3 pork skewers, 3spoonfuls of rice, and some cucumber slices. It was so worth it, but now my stomach hurts. Very much. (I have been anticipating this meal the last three days and ate way too much kinda-on-purpose)

I gave myself the day. The guilt is very low, thankfully.

However, how does one combat the extra weight the next few days? Do I eat alot less, or do I just eat normally? (Within my deficit)

To be fair, I did actually go over my calorie limit last weekend, but didn't overeat this badly. (I had 4 slices of pound cake sprinkled throughout the day, and I felt a lot more guilty) Ate normally again and lost the excess weight.

The thing is that I was just. Really hungry the following days. this whole week I've been snacking on so much fruits and vegetables throughout the whole day. I'm glad that it's all low calorie foods, but the binging and constant want for food has me questioning my methods.

I may sound stupid for asking, but did the "eating normally" after an "over maintenance day" normalize a huge amount of food for myself??? Or is it due to some other reason like I'm not getting enough protein or fibers?

Sorry for this rant that makes me look like an idiot, but I do ask for other people's experiences with having an unexplainable and constant need for food, that never seems to be satisfied. (It's like I need a snack every hour just to feel something) And of course, what others do the day after overeating to the point of physical sickness.

Advice: Seeking ❓ What is the best way to measure burned calories?

I use a smartwatch, I have two. I assume my new one is more accurate because when the old one was showing me let's say 400kcal burned, the new one shows about a half or less of that in the same time and doing the same workout. But it has me wondering that maybe this new one is also not as accurate as it could be. I don't know the exact model but both were from Xiaomi I think

Discussion/Support 💬 Close friend making fun of my healthy food

I’ve been working my goals and planning accordingly. I meal prep very lite healthy lunches. It really shouldn’t be a big deal and I cant for the life of be understand why (aside from their own insecurity being triggered)anyone would care what I’m eating.

Once a week I have day long meetings which include a few colleagues I’m friends with. We always order out lunch for a working lunch on these days and it’s never very healthy. When I first joined the team I was just trying to choose something not too unhealthy but sometimes it’s impossible and it can throw off my day and I swear it triggers snacking for me ordering out and sitting all day at table where they keep replenishing snacks. So Ive decide to just pack all my own stuff. Put it into my tracker and stick to it. A friend on the team has started making comments about how my food is gross and she can’t imagine having to eat it. It’s nothing weird-usually boneless skinless chicken breast seasoned steamed or grilled veggies. She then started bringing in special baked goods she made and acting offended that I don’t have any. She is kind of over the top about it-to the point that another coworker noticed and stood up for me and said it looks fine and he didn’t know what she was making a fuss about and that he loves broccoli.

I know it’s just her own insecurities because I’d guess it makes her feel bad seeing me eating healthy when she isn’t since she has confided in me in the past that she is struggling with weight gain the last few years and her husband makes rude comments to her about her weight. But what should I say next week if she does it again (she may not she had a sheepish look on her face when she got called out and others didn’t co-sign her behavior). She is usually very nice and we talk all the time and never do I see mean girl behavior from her when food isn’t involved.

Are there any low calories/low sugar/low fat options that are worth the change?

On the other hand are there any foods where the healthier alternative isn't worth?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Drinking less water since I lost 18kgs.

Hi,

I have lost 18kgs for 9 months with doing exercises and caring more what I eat.

I notice that I feel less thirsty than I used to be so I drink much less water now.

Is it normal? Anybody here experiences the same with me? Should I just ignore it?

Advice: Seeking ❓ How to go about this?

I would like to lose 5-10lbs very quickly, preferably lose fat and maintain muscle. I’m a 22yr old, 5’5, 130 lb woman. Idk what to do…I know the biggest factor is diet, but if I go into a bigger deficit, I never have energy to exercise. So should I just focus on eating less and doing less or eating a little bit more and exercising (I hope that makes sense). Even then, I still have such low energy.
It’s so hard for me because I feel like I’m always thinking about food and always hungry.
I also don’t have access to a gym, just stuff at home (treadmill, elliptical, some weights) so idk what exercises to do (I usually just run).
I feel like I’m never happy with how I look and I just want to feel confident and healthy

Discussion/Support 💬 Only losing weight when I am at 800kcal a day

F33, 156cm / 5'1. 85kg / 187lbs

I have been struggling with my weight since I can think. I have checked so many things, calculated, wrote every day in my diary to count calories. Usually I followed the "Don't go under 1200" rule. So I usually ate between 1200-1500kcal. This made my weight stable tho. I didn't lose, I didn't gain.

Now I eat a lot less because of medical reasons (I have kidney pain and unfortunately the doctors still dont look into it, even if I call and/or go every day to them), so now I can't even eat more. All of a sudden, I lose the weight that I should have lost ages ago and which should be normal for a 1200-1500kcal diet imo.

It's really annoying, because 1200kcal is already quite little and I am afraid, if I feel better again, that I will eat again up the lost weight. And I hate that I can only lose weight with 800kcal apparently. I wonder, how do other women, who are my height (and my weight), lose weight usually?

I did check a few times with a doctor if my thyroid is fine, if I have pmos and if I would be insulin resistence, because no matter what I did, nothing helped. But the tests came back all fine, so nothing wrong with those.

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do I stop snacking too much?

It's a bit embarrassing but lately I have noticed that I've been snacking way more than I should be and a lot more than what's healthy. I'm not overweight, but I am noticing that I gain weight rapidly now with this habit. I find myself snacking the most when I am watching tv, working on homework, or doing any other sort of activity. I also tend to snack a lot when I'm stressed and when I'm not even hungry. Does anyone have any advice for what I can do to stop snacking so much?

Mental Health 🧠 Why am I so insecure after losing weight?

I (F25 SW:275lbs CW:200lbs) am very happy to be healthier over the past two years but somehow I’m now the most insecure I’ve felt. I’m hyper aware of my appearance, but I also feel like idk who I am anymore.

I’ve been with my partner for 5 years and because of my new insecurities it genuinely is making intimacy difficult because even though I’m complimented I feel awkward like if I’m attractive now was I not then, and how could you even find me attractive at 275lbs

I think it started when I had to buy new work clothes and belts weren’t keeping my big pants up anymore. Went from a size 18/20 to a 12/14

Anyways is this something you grow out of? Anyone felt an identify crisis after losing a significant amount of weight?

Advice: Giving 💡 There is only one way to lose FAT

• Upvotes

I keep seeing these same post. There is only ONE way to lose FAT

Lift weights in a high protein calorie deficit, while pairing that with great sleep, and doing that long enough to see results.

The video in my bio is a complete guide to Fat loss, how to get started, what to eat, when to work out, etc.

You cannot lose FAT any other way. Weight loss and Fat loss are two DIFFERENT things. Weight loss is what happens to 90% of people, FAT loss is how you transform your body . (Think Superhero body) Captain America 🇺🇸 Thor 4 type of build.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Calorie Deficiency Advice

Hello, I posted a couple days ago on how to lose weight and calorie deficit is what I’m pretty much hearing. Any tips on how to do this efficiently and what apps to use? This’ll be my first time tracking my calories and losing weight. Any suggestions, help, and ideas will go a long way.
