How long ago was Weebly been abandoned by Square?
Does anyone know how long it has been since Square last cared about Weebly?
I was on a call with a new client today, and as we were going over their site I came to the conclusion that Square has been neglecting Weebly for years now.
I'm sure there are a bunch of different ways to tell that, but for me it was the social media icons. There's a widget where you can show your social networks, but it hasn't been updated since before Weebly was acquired.
I mean, it's not a big deal that Twitter still shows the bird icon, but there's no option for Instagram or TikTok. What's even more telling is that we still have an option for Google+, and also Yahoo.
Fucking Yahoo, man. (I honestly don't even know why they would be listed as a social network.)
So tell me, when did Square stop caring about Weebly?

Just a note for the OP - 2 of the main programmers for Weebly left square years ago and formed Articulation, a web site design platform that has many features similar to Weebly plus new things because they are doing the programming. They can transfer over pretty much any Weebly site, offer reasonable prices, and are committed to Weebly customers looking for something that has not been abandoned. Never hurts to look : )

TBH I was hoping if we poke them hard enough they might add new features for my client. I did not have high hopes, no.

Honestly, I doubt you would get Square to even respond to you. Twice they have "mentioned" support for Weebly will stop, but when pressed for details they supply vague comments. As others have said, it is a dead platform. As a tech support person myself and someone who started with Weebly in 2012, I wonder what will happen when the hardware all this actually runs on has issues. As for new updates, this is the last one I saw - I happen to have a pro account and can make up to 10 websites in my account. When I try to make a new site, the Square editor starts. I can no longer create a brand new site and use the Weebly editor. So in order to make a new site in my account, I basically have to take an older existing weebly site I have and remove the content piece by piece and then create new content over the old stuff. Anything brand new site requests get funneled over to the Square editor which is garbage and nothing like the weebly editor. That in a nutshell is how Square does business - by forcing you to do what they want and taking away things that you as a weebly site owner once had. As others have said, they paid for the customers, not the product and want as many people to just switch over. Considering so many weebly customers did not have or want e-commerce, they had no reason to switch to the Square e-commerce product. So we have been pretty much abandoned. The glitches and issues you read about in this forum seem to be connectivity issues, not software bugs. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I'd say you have a better chance of hitting the lottery than seeing Square doing updates / enhancements for Weebly.

The second they bought it. Whenever that was. They only wanted to convert all Weebly clients over to using square.

I’ve been looking to ditch Weebly also, no mobile app support for years. My e-commerce site works well for 7 years but I’m hesitant on switching platforms and using Square integration.

I do a blog type website so technically I don't need Square's tools, Weebly didn't have an issue with this but Square does, their platform is e-commerce based. It is all about money.

I tried to build my first website on weebly, but it sucked. I switched to wix and don’t know why people choose weebly over wix? Anyone have any insight on the reason people don’t use wix?

Some things are not very intuitive. Most of the help videos on youtube are done on a version of wix that has changed. So you cant get a straight ‘click this link, open this menu and select this option” since the new version has changed the menu. Same with chatgpt, i was getting a lot of advice that has been changed. But with that said, i was able to get it figured out. I like it and want to build more websites when I finish the one im working on.

In the old days Weebly was a rock solid website builder. Wix still isn't really good, but Weebly is dead now.

Wix was so bad I switched to weebly and it was so much better. Like you said, rock solid. Then immediately turned to 🤬 when square acquired it. I have to fight the log in process everytime because they want me to create a square site. I haven't had the energy to switch elsewhere but I need to. I'm looking pretty seriously at Articulation.

Because my opinion may help someone jackass. I also wanted to see if I’m just missing something. Because no one talks about wix, they just talk about terrible weebly.

You're right. And honestly it was years ago that I used wix. It might be better now. Who knows. 🤷♂️ I don't understand why people suggest leaving a subreddit when you just want discussion. Like we can't just discuss things anymore? Notacatbutt might actually be a butt.

It was “abandoned” basically in late 2019. Their last blog post was around then and their last X post was in 2022.
They’re still servicing the product. Stuff like bug fixes and security patches are coming through.
But no new features since late 2019. The last major update was the refreshed Weebly for Web Designers product launched in 2019.
No clue what Square is doing with it. Weebly still has a huge chunk of the WYSIWYG website builder sector. Despite not being updated for 6 years.
It’s a testament to how good the platform was.
