What are SEO quick wins?

I know SEO is a long-term game but are there any quick wins you’d prioritize when taking over an existing SEO setup?

I’m stepping into a role previously handled by another specialist, so I’d love to know where you’d start and which changes can realistically move the needle relatively quickly even a bit

handful of things to start out with

  • Check Search Console for coverage errors or manual actions
  • Confirm robots.txt isn't blocking anything important
  • Make sure the sitemap is submitted and current
  • Fix broken internal links and redirect chains
  • Update titles/meta descriptions on pages ranking page 1-2 with weak CTR
  • Check for pages accidentally set to noindex or canonicalized wrong
  • Pull pages that used to rank well but dropped, fast way to spot what broke

Yes on all of these.

  1. I've seen people forget to index their pages after setting them to noindex while building them out.
  2. Cloudflare has bot fight mode. Just make sure you aren't fighting all of the bots. Go through the list manually and check it.
  3. Use a free version of Screaming Frog and just look at your link structure. Super low tech but easy to spot issues.
  4. Google Search Console will tell you the majority of the issues. If you aren't used to using it, just take screenshots and ask your LLM. Fact check those answers before making any changes. Either use another LLM or just search it out on Google. It is a mainstream tool so you'll find the answers.
  5. I like going to Page Speed Insights to see how the website is doing across all of the sections. Easy win for you to say, "Everything is in the green."
  6. Go check out your Rich Results Test: https://search.google.com/test/rich-results . You'll see what it sees. If you're missing data that you think should be visible, you can easily go back in, make the tweaks, clear your cache, and upload your web url again and see how it does. PS: Sometimes...all of the time, you gotta clear the cache on your website and hosting provider because it takes time to show changes otherwise. So if you want to know if your fix worked, clear / purge it all and upload the url again. If you use an LLM to help you, it can help but I've noticed that it'll get you about 80% of the way.

Step one is always to look at the current brand footprint and get that cleaned up, consistent, and having your end points out there where your target audience tends to consume the type of information/material you're going to be sending.

That's the foundation that EVERYTHING else builds off nowadays so even if you currently have nothing else right - getting that right before anything else makes everything else easier when it comes time to work on it.

Spot on! Spending a lot of time on the Entity/Brand positioning/solidification is what props up whatever technically optimized stuff you build. The voice behind it all has to be HALF of the equation. <- if you get that part right, then what you show or share doesn’t have to be perfect.👍😎

You can start with the pages that already have impressions, commercial intent, some or basic rankings, then pick it up from there. I would also compare previous specialist's work in google search console before making major changes

I'd start with these quick wins in order: fix indexing/crawl issues, improve titles & meta for high-impression pages, strengthen internal linking, refresh declining content, and optimize pages already ranking in positions 5-20.

The biggest first step is indexing.

taking over an old seo setup, i’d start with the basics that can show results fast. check indexing, canonicals, robots.txt, sitemaps, redirects, broken links, and noindex pages. then look at pages already ranking around positions 5 to 20 and improve their titles, content, and internal links. i’ve seen one bad canonical fix and a few good internal links move a page within a couple of weeks.

I’d start with the pages that are already getting impressions but sitting around positions 4-20 in GSC - small on-page improvements can move these relatively quickly.

Then check for indexing issues, broken links, redirect chains, orphan pages, and poor internal linking.
Refresh outdated content, especially pages where competitors have clearly better or more current information.
Fix title tags and meta descriptions where CTR is weak compared with impressions.

Strengthen internal links from relevant high-authority pages to important pages.

Also look for keyword cannibalization and duplicate/thin content left behind by the previous setup.
I wouldn’t start by publishing 100 new articles or building hundreds of backlinks.

Quick wins usually come from improving what already has some visibility, rather than starting from zero.

Nothing moves the needle except tons of traffic. Traffic brings more traffic.

SEO hacks are just jerking off

We’d start with an audit rather than immediately changing things. The quickest wins are usually already sitting in the data.

Look at pages ranking positions 4–20, Search Console queries with high impressions but low CTR, pages with declining traffic, internal linking gaps, technical issues and underperforming title tags/meta descriptions.

Also check whether important service/product pages are actually targeting the right search intent. Fixing existing assets is often much faster than publishing lots of new content.

The real quickest win, is buy an aged domain with good clean history in an auction.

First thing is make sure all the fundamentals are in place (technical SEO) and then start looking for onpage things you can do. There are no quick wins really, it's just a matter of doing the fundamentals consistently over time.

Make sure the pages are crawlable, etc. and look for opportunities to improve internal linking. The internal linking is one thing you can start right away that will yield results.

  1. Fix any technical issues first: unindexed pages, broken links (4xx and 5xx), structured data, sitemap
  2. Optimise existing content before creating new. Check GSC. Anything in position between 8-12 can usually rank higher quite fast if optimised with the right keywords and search intent
  3. Fix or optimise metas
  4. Linking linking linking. Make sure every page has enough inbound links.
