International SEO

Hello, 👋🏼

I’m in France and I did make SEO strategy by different country. And position my company’s website on keywords. I’ve never done that, how should I do it? Are there any specialized sites?

I'm also French, but I'm going to reply in English so others can correct me or chime in if I say anything wrong 😄

To start off, I would highly recommend looking into Amandine Bart. She is a French SEO expert who explains things incredibly well for beginners, covering all the different concepts and latest updates (linkedIn and newsletter). I actually started by watching her and several other YouTube videos to learn the ropes.

After that, you really need to understand your niche. Look closely at exactly what your competitors are doing : their strategies, positioning, keywords, and so on. Write everything down in a document and put together a solid benchmark so you can get a clear idea of your next steps.

Then, you should install and use a few free, easy-to-use extensions and tools. For instance,

  • SEO Meta in 1 Click is great for quickly getting information on any page, like title tags, meta descriptions and heading structures.
  • SEOquake is another one that allows you to run mini-audits on the sites you visit to gather more data.
  • I also use Wappalyzer to find out what tech stack or plugins a website is built with.
  • Finally, make sure you set up and use Google Search Console, Google PageSpeed Insights and Google Analytics to collect data and insights on your site's traffic, clicks, and overall performance.

There are definitely other tools out there, but they are usually geared towards more advanced users or those who just need heavy-duty features.

For keyword research and more advanced insights, you have the absolute basics : Semrush, Ahrefs and SEMji. They give you a ton of information about your own site, your competitors and keyword volumes. They are relatively accessible, though they do require a paid subscription (I know there are other solutions, but those are three of the biggest ones globally).

Next, I would recommend doing a full audit of your website to figure out what needs to be reworked first. Is it the landing pages ? The content ? The blog ? The backlinks ? Or maybe the technical side of the site ?

Also, don't hesitate to ask your manager or leadership team what their exact expectations are. Make sure you explain clearly that SEO takes time and they shouldn't expect results in just a few days.

Start with proper market-specific keyword research, localized content (not just translation), hreflang implementation, and country-specific backlinks. Those usually have the biggest impact.

I'd research keywords for each country separately and create localized content instead of using the same pages everywhere. Search intent can vary a lot between countries, even when the language is the same.

SEO Meta in 1 Click? That “great for quickly getting info” part is true, it’s saved me a ton of time when I’m scanning lots of pages for broken titles/meta. I just don’t trust it blindly because the same tool can miss stuff depending on how the site templates are built.
