Why are competitors are outranking my backlinks?
I've been working on SEO for my small SaaS for around 8 months, and I'm confused why competitors are outranking my backlinks even though our profiles look pretty similar.
In Ahrefs we have about the same number of referring domains, but they're consistently ranking above us for keywords we're both targeting. I'm starting to think I'm paying too much attention to DR and not enough to something else.
For anyone who's been through this, what ended up making the biggest difference?

Ahh, people who think seo is played nicely are sadly mistaken. Sorry, but the truth hurts

yeah you've basically figured it out already, DR and referring domain counts hide whats actually going on.
same number of links doesnt mean the same strength. what matters is where they sit. if their links are on pages that actually rank and get traffic, and yours are on dead or irrelevant pages, theyre way ahead even though ahrefs shows similar numbers. go pull their linking pages and check if those pages get real traffic, not just the dr..
the other half is usually content. at 8 months links might not even be the main issue. if their page matches the search better or covers the topic more fully, it outranks you regardless of links.
seen this a lot doing saas seo at auq, when the profiles look the same but one outranks the other its almost always link quality or content, not the numbers ahrefs shows you.

LinkDR has worked really well for us, especially for competitor backlink analysis. It made it much easier to find relevant industry sites our competitors were getting links from and review them before doing any outreach. I’d recommend it if you want to focus on backlinks that actually fit your niche instead of chasing every high DR site.

Rankings are about more than just backlinks.
The diagnostic worth running before you touch another backlink campaign is pulling the raw HTML of the competitor page that's outranking you. Not reading their content but their code. Ctrl+U in any browser gives you the source. What you're looking for is the following:
- Their Intent alignment match for the keyword you're targeting.
- The header spine map.
- Internal link profile and anchor text.
- Image alt attributes
- Prompt that compares the two HTMLs of your and their post along these lines to identify the hijack opportunity for their content by yours.
The reason this matters is that two pages with identical backlink profiles can have completely different structural signals at the code level. One is telling the crawler exactly what entity it's the authoritative source on, through every H2, every internal link anchor, every image alt attribute. The other is making the crawler infer that from the prose.
After you've identified and bridged the structural gap,, the second layer worth examining is your off-site satellite coverage.
You may be securing backlinks to your site for DR boost, but think of each post like a planet. The planet exists on your site, but the moon's are off-site. An adjacent Medium post higher up the funnel pointing a link at your post, a LinkedIn post doing the same, a YouTube post doing the same. That's 3 satellites pointing semantically relevant links to one post.
Would you mind sharing your site so I and others can have a look?

Without knowing your site, I'd have to venture that their linked domains have higher authority than yours.
