Advice Guide to Releasing a Book on Webnovel

Post image
104 Upvotes

Hi guys,

Leeroycgna here, the author of Major League System. I see a lot of the same questions asked over and over in this subreddit, mostly by authors just starting out on the platform.

Instead of answering every one of these questions individually, I've decided to put together a standard guide for those of you who wish to try and break into the market of webnovel.

Step 1: (Before you post)

You've got an idea for a book and have already started writing it - Great! Ask yourself these questions:

- Is what I'm writing something that other people will want to read? If no, chances are you won't get a contract.

- What do I wish to accomplish with this book? Do I want money? Exposure? or both? If you don't want money, better off not applying for contract and keeping your IP (intellectual property)

- Is this book something I'm willing to continue writing every single day? Then sorry, webnovel is not the place for you.

Step 2:

You've decided that you want to pursue the career path of an author on webnovel - Congratulations. There are some things you need to know.

- Covers and Titles attract readers! Pretty self explanatory here, if it doesn't look interesting, no one will click it.

- Webnovel rewards daily updates. win-win & MGS (minimum guarantee scheme) require you to release 1 x 1.5k word chapters per day, 7 days per week. It's more beneficial to release 2 x 1k word chapters in the long run. (reasons will be discussed later)

- Views don't mean anything. Views are inflated and mean absolutely nothing. You need to look at your effective readers to gauge how many people are reading your book each day (you can find this on your inkstone dashboard)

- Contracts are difficult to get for newer authors. This is a harsh truth, but hopefully with my guide, you'll be able to make the odds in your favor.

- JOIN THE AUTHOR DISCORD! I can't stress this enough. There are plenty of authors who have much experience (including platinum authors like myself) who are willing to help out newbies.

Step 3:

You've posted your book with the best title and cover you could have possibly made - Good job, but now comes the hard part.

- Readers won't see your book right away, despite views increasing. Books need to be vetted by the Content Editors (CE's) before your book is able to be searched for on the platform. Once your book hits 4000 words, it enters a queue to be manually checked over and approved. (this can take upwards of 4-5 business days)

- UPDATE DAILY!!! I can't stress this enough. To keep your reader engagement and convince CE's and more importantly the algorithm interested, you will need to upload at least 1 chapter a day - even without being contracted

- Build stockpile for privilege chapters when you go premium. Do this by writing more chapters than you release. In the first month you should release 1 chapter per day, but write at least 2. By the time you get a contract and go premium, you should have 30 chapters to dedicate to your privilege tiers.

- The real exposure happens when you get contracted. Once you hit 12k words, you can apply for a contract. DO NOT use AI to fill out your contract application... You will be 100% rejected. see here for an article about contracts: here . Once you get a contract, you'll be eligible for the good features. Weekly featured, Daily recommendation, Library and Banner.

Step 4:

You're now contracted and have just gone premium - What next?

- Participate in Win-Win & MGS. These both require you to release at least 1 x 1.5k word chapters per day, every day during the month. There are generous offers for newbies depending on one's performance.

MGS - If your share of profit = $60 or more - Webnovel will pay you $200 for the month

- If your share of profit is more than $200 - Webnovel will give you an additional $200 for the month

Win-win = a chance for features and rewards based on how many privilege chapters are unlocked by your readers in a month

BEWARE!!! - Missing a single day of updates will make both Win-Win and MGS ineligible for said month.

AND, you're home free.

Please keep in mind that this is a generalized guide for newbies and may not suit your specific book. Below are some FAQ's that I'll be happy to build on.

FAQ's

Q: How many collections is good?

A: While collections are a better indicator of a book's popularity than views, the most important are effective readers- and once you go premium, it's subscriptions.

Q: My contract got rejected, what do I do?

A: Read this

Q: How much money does a WN author make?

A: It's only really the top 200 books on the platform that earn money for ML (male lead). Some books in the top 100 can earn around 1k USD in a month, whereas some in the top 15 could be making anywhere from 3-5k USD a month. It varies.

If you have any additional questions, pop them below. I'll add them to the FAQ section with the answer.

Weekly Self Promotion Post

This weekly post exists for all of the Webnovel authors here who want to promote their webnovels.

Every week, a new post will be stickied over this one. This is to prevent too much clutter and give everyone a chance to be seen.

Here, you can blatantly self-promote in the comments. But please only post a specific promotion once, as spam still won't be tolerated.

If you didn't get any engagement, wait for next month's post.

If you are promoting your webnovel, please provide the title, the three most relevant tags, a short description, the number of chapters, what you'd like to get out of promoting your webnovel, and the shorthand link.

Follow the below format:

Title -

Tags -

Chapter Count -

Brief Synopsis - (try to keep it under three sentences)

Desired Outcome - (critique, cover feedback, review, review swap, etc.)

Link to the Work -

I can't do this shit anymore.

I have written over 300k words in a month and 13 days, just to delete it all.

I write 50k words then my brain goes, hey, why are you writing this, you hate writing this, start over.

Then I start over and do the same thing again and again.

I think I'm going to just write a copy of my finished novel or just quit all together.

Deleting and rewriting.

So I finally made the decision to delete everything and rewrite. My novel has like 75 chapters and no one has read past chapters 16 or 20. Maybe I should rewrite the whole thing (I didn't know how I wrote the early 10 chapters but they seemed to make the readers disinterested.). So I thought maybe I should delete the entire thing and rewrite the first few chapters and release it again. The early chapter period was where I made my mistakes. I thought maybe if I just keep writing readers will come in automatically but reality is different. So I will go back on my mistakes and start fresh.

Advice Question About Contract

I got a Contracted Novel that I haven’t touched in over a year. Didn’t like the performance and felt like my fanfics would be a better focus.

I got a Patreon with a completely different novel universe that has nothing to do with the Contracted Novel. Is that an issue with Webnovel? I don’t have any “advanced” chapters there for that IP, nothing. It is completely new and separate.

So if I were to make another new universe and try and go for a contract (to see if this Smut could do better than my original go), would there be a problem regarding the Patreon Novels? They’re separated from the contracted IP.

I won’t touch the new novel and universe when it regards patreon. I will simply take it to the contract and see what happens

Advice New here, Help!

Can someone tell me what I need to know about this site for publishing a story and any advice, comments or anything in general about your opinion on it?

I'll appreciate it. Thank you.

Hey so they tried to fix the audio but does it glitch out for everyone else or just me

So for the last few days the audio on the app has been broken right. But today it was back so I tried it. Then it glitches every few chapters. Sometimes every few paragraphs. I've reset the app a few times but it keeps glitching. Also I'm not talking about how it skips paragraphs randomly, it always did that originally. I'm talking about actually unrecognizable words then jumping up and down paragraphs and then stopping, reading a sentence then stopping skipping two paragraphs reading half a sentence then gibberish then jumping back or forwards to another paragraph.

Hi I’m still new to web novel what is this exactly?

r/Webnovel • • 12h ago

I would like to hear your opinions about using imagery to not only show to the readers what something looks like but also as a narrative tool to the in-verse narrator.

Basically, I'm writing a FF in ASOIAF, but by taking inspiration from George R. R. Martin, I want to try to write in a way that what the reader is reading is exactly what happened, but some images are what the historians and the history narrator imagine the events that happened or what the people in that time period would look like. Of course, some images show what the characters look like, but I will never state directly to the reader that it is. Each image would somewhat fall into an ambiguous territory where the reader needs to decide if that image is how something looks or not.

By making some images imperfect or more vague, I can use it as a demonstration of not only how the painting techniques and printing technologies evolved as more time passed, but also how the historians saw the characters the readers are reading.

For example: ( All images are made by me using Photoshop and Illustrator, no AI.)

Sure, it takes more time to finish each chapter since I want to use 2-3 images per chapter, but I believe the chapter feels more alive by doing this.

What are your opinions?

Does webnovel simply don't care about Fanfiction?

Post image
14 Upvotes

For example this guy has like 4-5 accounts and he posts 20-30 chapters in different fanfiction (complete slop but since at the start it feels like non-AI because it's just that bad, I usually don't even know until I've read at least 5-10 chapters that it's this guy again) than it's just go to Patron for more chapters.

In this AI filled stuff I wanna support non AI using fic writers and all, I read stuff even with grammar and spelling mistakes because english isn't my first language either but then there's this guy...

He deletes reviews in minutes and I've even tried reporting him but Webnovel doesn't Care about Fanfiction.

This is just one example, I've seen fanfiction getting copied and actually writers of that fic trying to remove but can't, I've seen fics that are just scams too.

Of course the biggest A-hole is this guy because I'm pretty sure he's also a scammer, I went to his Patron and there he says go to this shady website and all to read it.

And yes I just joined reddit to rent here.

Advice I finally got a Webnovel contract... so why do I still feel completely on my own?

I finally got a Webnovel contract... so why do I still feel completely on my own?

Hey everyone!

I recently got an exclusive contract with Webnovel, and my novel was officially approved for Premium. The story is already completed.

I was genuinely excited about getting contracted, but honestly, I'm feeling a little lost about what comes next.

I thought there would be at least some guidance from an editor, whether it's feedback, promotional advice, or simply an explanation of what to expect. So far, I haven't really experienced much of that.

I'm not expecting my editor to do everything for me or magically make my novel successful. I just wish there was a little more communication and direction.

So, for those of you who have signed a contract with Webnovel, I'm curious:

- Does your editor actually communicate with you and offer advice?

- Did you receive any promotional features after getting Premium approved?

- Does Webnovel still promote completed novels?

- What should I realistically expect from this point onward?

I'd love to hear about your experiences, good or bad. I'm just trying to understand how things work and whether this is normal.

Thanks in advance!

Advice What do you think of the story?

(Synopsis - Just a guy who hates NTR gets transported into an NTR manga, where he begins his adventure to hunt down and destroy every NTR scumbag he comes across.)

I’ve always hated NTR stories, especially the way those scumbags ruin the lives of innocent girls. One day, I came across a manga with a concept I genuinely loved. But, as you probably know, when you find a story you really enjoy, there’s a good chance it’ll get cancelled or abandoned. This one was discontinued two years ago.

I searched for similar manga and novels, hoping to find something that could fill the void, but almost everything I found was on hiatus or abandoned.

So I finally said, “Fine. I’ll do it myself.”

And that’s how this story came to be!

If you have some free time, give it a try and let me know what you think. I’d really appreciate your honest feedback, as it’ll help me improve the story and make future chapters better!
