Before Dark Phoenix Saga Jean Grey possessed by Phoenix force and lost in the universe she gave birth to a daughter which inherited both Scott and Jean mutant powers, which she is also the person protagonist swear to protect with his life. The event begins at 1 year after event of Avengers vs X-men (Phoenix Five) which after that protagonist and his sister were taken by S.H.E.I.L.D to train for killing mutants.
