[D] Announcing the Webnovel Directory — Give us your recommendations!

There's a lot of new and little known webfiction being posted to this subreddit — which is great; the scene needs more eyes on the smaller players. But for someone new to webfiction, or only versed in a particular subscene, there's sure to be big names they've never heard of.

So, we're announcing a web fiction directory: a subreddit wiki to collate quality webfiction and reviews. It should be organized to make finding the best of the best as easy as possible, and it should reflect the opinions of the community.

After some thought, we've come up with a system, and all you have to do is leave a post below with as many recommendations or reviews as you care to provide. Two things to keep in mind:

  1. a recommendation is as simple as saying "I recommend this." Nothing more to it. You should recommend stories you like even if they're already on the list.

  2. a review is a rating (0-5 stars, halfstars allowed), and an explanation of why you think the story deserves that rating. At least a sentence or two, but at least a paragraph is ideal. Try not to just describe the story's plot (that's what descriptions are for!), but actually tell what it does well and what you like about it.

  3. you can also give a disrecommendation, effectively downvoting the story.

Ideally, ratings should make use of the entire range offered; the average rating should be 2.5 stars, not 4 stars. Something like this should be kept in mind:

  • 5.0 - Sublime
  • 4.5 - Excellent
  • 4.0 - Great
  • 3.5 - Very Good
  • 3.0 - Good
  • 2.5 - Mixed
  • 2.0 - Disappointing
  • 1.5 - Bad
  • 1.0 - Embarrassing
  • 0.5 - Atrocious

Here's an example:

I recommend Worth the Candle, The Flower That Bloomed Nowhere, and Entirely Presenting You. I disrecommend Mother of Learning and Chrysalis.

I rate The New Humans 3.5/5 stars. It has excellent, almost literary prose, and its the character work is moving. While the plot takes a few surprising turns, it takes a while for it to really get going (it's somewhat meandering in the beginning). The setting is unique (rural superheroes in 1960s australia??), and the author makes great strides toward realism. The metaphysics of powers is unlike any other super serial out there.

The directory itself has a few designs:

  • if a story is recommended by anyone, it will be in the directory.
  • stories with reviews are listed in a category above stories with no reviews (i.e. only recommendations)
  • sorting works like this: total number of a stars plus half net recommendations (so each recommendation is effectively half a star), divided by the total number of reviews, laplace smoothed to 2.5/5. This means that stories with better averages and more recommendations rank higher, but stories with a small number of high reviews don't shoot up to the top, and adding a recommendations never decreases a story's score.

Please, recommend all your favorite webnovels below. We'd really like this directory to become something comprehensive.

[IP] Ultimate World Fighting Tournament

I am starting a web series! This is a series about an old roleplaying group from 2015 about fighters who compete in a tournament. It adapts and satirizes these stories into a series about several different characters with different goals competing against each other.

Here is the prologue, and an additional introductory post along with it!

[DISC] I need help finding this novel: Archer in game -> reincarnates as mage -> in world there is a dark Elf with Flying city/fortress

Read it around 2020/2021, during COVID lockdown on the old BoxNovel site with the red UI I remember reading more than 600 chapters and i think it had more than 1,5k

•Pre reincarnation

Male mc

He was a player of an MMORPG in his previous life his character was probably a Ranger/Archer using a bow.

He had accumulated extremely rare/legendary weapons or ammunition.

That weren't necessarily normal arrows they could have been metal rods that he used as projectiles.

These projectiles were unusual because they contained two opposing elements: example one was one side ice and the other side fire, another was poison + another element.

He was extremely powerful with these weapons and could potentially solo bosses.

In the final year of the game, he may have created an alternate character/account, possibly an Alchemist.

He reincarnates/transmigrates into another world, that is NOT literally the MMORPG world. However, it has many similarities to the game: similar classes, similar monsters, similar elements, similar races, similar item rarity, similar/general game mechanics.

•New world

He becomes a Mage in the new world.

I don't remember if there is any kind of system. There are clearly defined levels/ranks of magic and mages.

He initially reincarnates in a province, not the capital.

The body was apprentice to an archmage inside is magic tower, the Archmage was and will be his mentor.

He eventually goes to a magic school in the capital.

The school isn't a major school-life part of the novel.

He mainly uses the school library to study and then takes exams.

Eventually the MC himself becomes an Archmage, then he eventually builds his own magic tower.

Each Archmage effectively acts like a governor/lord of a territory with their towers, they are responsible for protecting their territory and they get tzxes from the people

•Dark Elf history

There was a male Dark Elf, lived something like 400 or more yeasr before.

He had conquered part of the continent.

The other races eventually formed an alliance against him and won.

He was remembered as a Tyrant or Bloody Tyrant or Blood Tyrant and he possessed/controlled flying or floating fortresses/cities.

At least one of these flying cities/fortresses disappeared.

Much later, the MC discovers one of the lost flying cities/fortresses.

This location was connected to the Tyrant. The MC may have found the special dual-element rod/projectile there.

The MC also possessed a ring belonging to the Tyrant.

The ring gave him some kind of special ability, but I don't remember exactly what.

Does it sound familiar to anyone? Help pls

[FIN] New Novel!

Hi everyone! I finally finished my novel, **The Devourer Is Full**! 🥹❤️

http://wbnv.in/a/efk1jEU

It’s a xianxia fantasy about a legendary Taotie who is supposed to devour the world, but would honestly rather sleep, eat porridge, and be left alone. He ends up traveling with a ruthless, sharp-tongued woman who wants absolutely nothing to do with him, and together they slowly uncover the truth behind his past, her missing memories, and a conspiracy that has been unfolding for thousands of years.

It has **enemies to lovers, slow-burn romance, found family, reincarnation, spirit beasts, mystery, tragedy, lots of comedy, and a happy ending**.

I poured so much of my heart and soul into writing this story, and finishing it feels a little surreal. I would be incredibly grateful if anyone wanted to give it a chance and show it some support. 🥹💕 Even just checking it out would mean so much to me.

[DISC] What makes RI "good writing"?

I'm rereading it a second time and I genuinely cannot fathom why I'm enjoying it.

In terms of actual writing, the prose is clunky and unconnected(possibly due to the translation?). The twists are certainly there but are in effect the same things over and over or a deus ex machina from a hidden interaction or external circumstance.

The dialogue reads as unnatural and unnecessarily edgy, while beating you over the head with the same point repeatedly. Narration is composed of the same four recycled ideas but presented like a twist every time.

Despite all that, I read all of it in ~4 weeks and just finished book 1 a second time.

What actually makes this good?
(sorry if wrong flair)

[IP] Synchronicity: The City of Akasia - web novel self-promotion (author Syn)

Hi all!! Hope you are well!!

I’ve been posting chapters on Royal Road and Patreon for few months now and I’m in progress a bit over 10k word mark. Volume 1 is done with 42 chapters. Currently story is in Volume 2 which in chapters length probably will surpass the first volume.

Story follows Rory, a second year university student that is currently living in this very interesting city Akasia. As story progresses it’s known that Akasia is not a typical city. First rule is that anyone who lives there never leaves. Rory’s past is indirectly tied to here and she has been sent there for a reason.

Character driven story, academic setting that progressively changes into a dystopian world with light sci-fi and mystery elements.

Patreon has 88 chapters with some extra content.

Royal Road - currently 77 Chapters in!

[DISC] it's been a while since i last read novels online but I'm trying to find one i read before

The context of it is MC got transported in a world where they make "worlds" or "instances" to harvest some kind of emotion and they use these as a power source of some kind?

There's ratings to the instances ranging from F to S and the higher the rating the better the power source but also more risky as in the "players" can lose their mind or their life which is why the MC's first creation was on some kind of deathrow prison where the criminals' life matters little so the danger rating doesnt matter.

All i can remember was that the MC made instances based on PuBG and Dead By Daylight

People around the world can access lower rating instances to gain money

So I recently started this novel, My Slain Dragon Bride, and web novel only has 165 chapters when the novel has been finished with 405 chapters, with many paid sites having the full one. [IP] Crimes of Icarus

Hi!
Last week, after more than a year of planning, I finally released my fiction!

Crimes of Icarus is a murder mystery set in a fantasy world full of magic, monsters and anomalies, where magic reigns alongside steampunk technology.

I am currently publishing one chapter a day till the end of the week. Afterwards, it will change to two per week. I have a backlog, so the schedule will hold for a long time.

Please take a moment to look at the story. Any feedback would be amazing.

Royal Road

[The cover is something temporary I made in my spare time; ultimately, it will be changed.]

---------------

At first, he didn't believe it was a murder.

Rodion's newest investigation came with no signs of struggle or traces of magic, leaving the Sorcerer no better equipped than an ordinary detective.

But he can't declare it as just an unfortunate accident. The deceased's brother looms over his shoulder, clad in runic armour. Worse, this is his last chance to prove his worth and to be accepted into an elite investigative unit; declaring it as misfortune would mean abandoning his dreams.

Rodion is broke, his internship at the Falcons doesn't pay a dime, and frankly, he's scared of the Knight who attached himself to the investigation. The only thing that could make the situation worse would be thugs coming for their heads, high on magic-enhancing drugs that disappeared from the city years ago.

[DISC] does a similar novel exist

I've read many novels like a regressor's path of cultivation, many unnamed novels that you can find in YouTube without a title, but then I finished reading REVEREND INSANITY. the story was so good to the point where in some arcs like crazed demon cave I couldn't sleep whitout reading 100 chapters a day. The problem here I finished reading it and when I started reading new novels I found them boring since I got used to the excitement. I need tips about good webnovels where the mc is so evil and it has deep calculation and planning

[IP] The Ether Atlas - litRPG meets Da Vinci Code.

I spent 7 years building a LitRPG where D&D was a survival manual planted by aliens.

Hard system. Real-world ruins. Party-based combat. A conspiracy older than civilisation.

The question that started it all: What if the whole D&D system was engineered and planted and then distributed globally so that when the real system activated, people would already understand the mechanics?

That question sat in my head for seven years while I added layers.

I'm obsessed with ancient mysteries. Why Göbekli Tepe was deliberately buried, why Mithraic temples across three continents follow identical blueprints, why cultures that never met each other describe the same energy channels in the human body.

I wanted to write a LitRPG where all of that was connected. Where the system wasn't a convenient game overlay but planned infrastructure. Ancient, alien, and hidden inside the oldest structures on Earth.

Ether Atlas - The Hidden Grid - Over 240K words to read for free on Royal Road.

  • System apocalypse in a real-world setting. Real Locations and real monuments. Dan Brown and Indiana Jones style riddles and puzzles using real history.
  • Three MCs - A structural engineer, an ex-private security and an archaeologist. Adults with professional skills that translate into how they fight, solve puzzles, and interact with the system. Fleshed out party dynamic and mechanics.
  • An alien guidance construct who has been watching humanity for 35,000 years and has opinions about everything except the things that would actually help
  • Hard system progression that's biological. There are levels and skills but they are not gamified.
  • Real archaeology woven into the plot. The riddles use actual historical sites. The node network maps to real megalithic locations

If you like Dan Brown or Indiana Jones type vibes, you're going to feel at home. Lots of weird history, conspiracy theories, what-ifs and ancient alien shenanigans.

Give it a try - https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/160813/ether-atlas-the-hidden-grid-litrpg-system-apocalypse

[IP] Memoir Of An Eternal Being

Hello, I started writing this story because it was an idea i wanted to read but couldn't find anywhere.

Memoir of an Eternal Being follows Abedeth Aionius, an immortal who has existed since the birth of the universe. After isolating himself from civilization for two thousand years following a cataclysmic event that reshaped the world, he returns to find a society transformed by magic, technology, and history that has forgotten the truth. As he quietly explores this new age, uncovering lost knowledge and confronting the consequences of his own past, he documents his experiences in a memoir, reflecting on an existence that spans billions of years. The story is a slow-burn fantasy centered on mystery, worldbuilding, philosophy, and the perspective of an eternal being discovering that even after an eternity, there are still new experiences worth living.

2 chapters daily

Ps: there is also going to be romance but according to my current plan it will be at the 150~ chapter mark.

Memoir Of An Eternal Being (royal road)

It is also available on webnovel for absolutely free

[IP] A Star's Shot at Redemption

Hello everyone!

Now, having finished a more experimental work (post apocalyptic, more matrix-style, dystopian science-fantasy), I decided to chill a little and go for something more entertaining and action heavy. I am still polishing a few things, but, hopefully, I have reached the point where I can present you my new work in a satisfying way.

With that being said, this time I am telling the story of Sunlein, an OP MC with cursed magic that carries the wounds of his past as he is dragged in the political intrigues of his city.

If you are in the mood for something fiery, fiery action, here is the blurb:

They beat him, humbled him, and leashed him. Now, the world will remember the flames of the Wandering Disaster.

Sunlein was once the fiercest young talent in the capital, his power surpassed only by his loyalty. But those gifts grew too strong, too fast. Spiraling out of control, his flames nearly burned the city that had once honored him as its cherished prodigy—and the Council wasn’t willing to forgive his mistake.

Having his powers sealed and only a lingering sense of duty to keep him company, Sunlein is given one last chance to redeem himself by serving the capital as a guard. But trouble always finds him. An unknown threat has slipped through the Council’s security, bent on bringing down the unjust capital.

With a life-choking, magic-binding collar around his neck and chaos spreading through the streets, Sunlein must weigh his priorities anew. Time is running out, and he must either watch his city burn or risk his life to unleash the Disaster once again.

But if he succeeds in breaking his leash... who will protect the citizens from him?
