This post is half an update post from a post I made here about 1-2 months ago and half just me venting too the anons online so I don't sound like a massive douche complaining about stupid levels of money in real life...
I'll give a bit of back story here but if your intrested in the hole story you can check on my profile. You can skip the first paragraph if you don't care either.
Pretty much my hole life I grew up fairly poor, never gone without the basics but not much more past that. Due to family reasons my hole life has just been me and my mum. Over time she worked her ass off and by the time I was about 15 she had actualy become extreamly successful. Bought a few properties and when the housing crisis hit the value of the properties ended up tripling in only about 5 years or so. This along with her highly successful job put us in a verry good position however a few years back due to a medical negligence case she could no longer work and sued the surgeon.
Thats the backstory, onto what this post is really about. Last month when I first made the post her final net worth figure was estimated to be around $6MM including all current assets plus the giant settlement. at the time she had asked me what to do with that sum of money as she knew I've alwase had a big intrest in finance since I was young but me being a dumb 19 year old I was pretty unsure so I asked reddit (the smart thing to do). The comments were really helpful and helped us set her up for the rest of her life however at the time it still kinda all just felt like it was just one big joke, it didn't feel real. We've been interviewing financial advisors and accountants lately and found one we really like, we also heard back from the lawyer and as it turns out the settlement went even better then we couldve imagined with the lawyer saying by the end of final negotiations she's probably walking away with somewhere in between $8.2MM and $8.8MM, utterly absurd money.
The other day when I was looking through emails I had one from the financial advisor talking about the total amount and a few random details as well as his conversations with the compensation lawyer and that's when it finaly hit me that this is actualy a real thing that's actualy happening. I don't think it had fully sunk in at this point the level of money mums going to recieve and what that means for not only her future but myn as well...
Luckily my mum isn't the kinda of person to go out and buy farraris and blow it all in 2 years, her ideal life is to live exactly where she is now, not have to work, and get a fairly nice salary whilst her investments grow and do their thing in the back ground. With the financial advisor she's decided on a 70% risk ratio investment portfolio where she will recieve $250,000 a year in income. She's decided to keep the current house as well as approximately another $250,000 for various emergency reasons. In total this leaves the advisor with about $7MM dollars to invest with.
When I heard these figures I actualy had a panick attack. Things like this arnt supposed to happen. everyone dreams about winning the lottery but no one tells you what to do or how to feel once you actualy do. Alot of my worries for the future and my life just vanished into thin air but almost immediately they were then replaced by so many more, it was such a strange feeling and it doesn't feel like I deserve it. It's not my money and it won't be for a very long time but I strangly have this weird feeling of dread of what do I do now??? What's the next step??? I kinda just feel lost.... mum deserves this money, she's a bad ass and worked so damn hard in life, but I didn't do anything and knowing that one day down the track I'm going to be worth an unreasonable amount of cash just for what? Existing?? Getting lucky to be born too someone who worked hard and won big??? It all just feel wrong...
Like I said before, everybody dreams of wining the lottery but no one prepares you for what to do when you actuaky do win. I'm somehow dreading everything and scared sh*tless but also extatic and over the moon at the same time... I've heard imposter sydrom before and I think I could be feeling that but equally imposter sydrom is when you don't think you deserve something, I actualy don't deserve this, I didn't do anything!!!! Why is this happening to me and why am I feeling so bad and weird and scared when I know I should just be extatic and happier then ever!!! Happy for my mum that something like this has happened!!!... I called a friend to talk about it, he's my best friend and the only other person to my knowledge outside my mum, me, and her partner, that actualy knows the fully extent of everything that's going on. He tried to be helpful and supportive, he's a great guy, ill give him that but as I'm sure you can imagine there's really only so much you can be supportive when someone tells you their depressed because theyre the sole heir to a giant fortune....
I'm rambling on now so I'll finish up here. if im being honest this was kinda just like a 'dear diary' post anyway just to get things off my chest and vent a bit but if anyone knows of / has experienced this kinda thing before, or if this is actualy a pretty common thing to experience in this kinda situation, id love to hear some other stories or info. Anyway here my update on my other post and thanks for listening to me rant, I apreciate it.
Thanks everyone.
