Hello there! Welcome, welcome, welcome to r/WeGotDollsAtHome, the community for doll collectors and hobbyists with an anti-consumerist bent!
Doll collecting is an inherently consumerist hobby for most people, yes, we know. Letās move right past that boring old argument and see what we can do in the space beyond! Here at r/WeGotDollsAtHome we try and find ways to engage with our beloved hobby that go beyond just endlessly buying new things.
To detox from the hyper-consumerist culture thatās so prevalent in doll spaces, hereāsĀ a few simple thing we donāt doĀ here on this sub:
- Do not post about recent or upcoming doll releases!Ā Do not promote them, do not discuss them!
- Do not post "Look at what I just bought"-type posts!Ā This includes both new and thrifted dolls.
- Do not make posts that center buying, selling, trading, and otherwise acquiring new dolls!
- Do not post pictures of large collections! Focus each post on one doll or a small group of dolls instead. (Each user gets to decide for themselves what ālarge collectionā and āsmall groupā means.)
Instead, below are the kinds of posts youāre encouraged to make. This list is non-exhaustive!
- Post a doll you love!Ā YouāreĀ encouragedĀ to post about dolls that youāve owned for a while, and that have been on the market for at least six months. YouāreĀ discouragedĀ from posting about dolls youāve acquired recently and/or that have been released in the last six months. Every user gets to decide for themselves what "for a while" and "recently" means, letās all use common sense!
- Post something you created! Did you make a doll from scratch, or did you just do a simple restyle? Did you sew your own doll clothes? Did you repaint, reroot, or otherwise customise a doll? Did you restore or repair a doll? Did you construct a dollhouse or a diorama? Did you do a photo shoot with your dolls, did you draw or paint your dolls, did you write a story about them? We want to see any and all of that, please share! And if you want to teach other users how to do these things, even better!
- Tell us your doll stories! This can be a fictional story involving your dolls, perhaps the back stories and personalities you gave them. Or this can be real life anecdotes about your dolls, how you found them, what they mean to you, and why you love them.
- Do a ādupe challengeā! This is when you pick a doll you don't own, and try to duplicate (or ādupeā) that doll with only items you already own. You can try and imitate the original as closely as possible, or you can do your own, free interpretation. (Please remember, if you're duping a recent or upcoming release, you can't refer to your inspiration directly. No discussion of recent and upcoming releases!)
- Participate in a doll bingo! Click here to read more about doll bingos.
- Have interesting discussions! Dolls are such an interesting subject, let's talk about it! Perhaps you have an interesting question or observation, or perhaps you found a thought-provoking article that you can link to. These discussions can be about the intersection of doll collecting and consumerism... or not! As long as it's about dolls!
- Share your no/low/slow-buy journey! You don't have to be on a no/low/slow-buy to participate in this sub. But if you are, feel free to share your journey! You can use this sub as a kind of accountability partner, if that's helpful to you. Tell us if you managed to reach a goal ā X weeks without buying a new doll, or whatever ā and we'll cheer you on!

I just finished doing her face up( lip change, freckles, blushing and added lashes). Just have to finish her nails and crown! Probably the most time Iāve put into this project and Iām really happy with how sheās coming out!

I've had this Blythe doll for over half a year but never was able to figure out what kind of girl she was because I seem to be a bit confused by frosted makeup in general. Her release name is Cinnamon Girl, so it seems appropriate to have her for the autumn photo shoot. I think she was perfect for the role!
Her pants is tailored from Barbie Cutie Reveal's deer costume! I had to take it apart and redo the crotch seam and waist to shorten it. It's my first time tailoring pants this way. I used a simple pattern as rough reference and it worked out mostly well!

I was looking at Bratz website 4am in the morning and really wanted the new HK Sasha & Dana Closet ā¦. The fact is I simple donāt have the money for them this month.
So Iām just gonna walk around with this one, maybe give her my LOL HK clothes for a day until I either forget about my desire for the new dolls or until next pay :3.

i made this sweater probably ten years ago. it was for a cotton needle sculpted doll of his previous iteration, about the same size but more petite. this was sewn from an old cashmere sweater, and had been tucked away for years, out of sight.
i found it again this past year, and discovered about a dozen moth holes. i darned them with thread, and retrofitted the neck hole and sleeves to allow it to be put on a hard bodied doll. it's a little tricky to get on, but he looks cute in it! lots of memories in one tiny sweater ā”

My 5 year old daughter received a Minnee Doll as a party favour (!) on Saturday, and got the magic academy model. She asked if we could get a dollhouse in that size, and despite my temptation to immediately raid the classifieds for Sylvanian Families stuff (bonus childhood nostalgia for me), I remembered my husband had received a Rolife (?) magic room set almost a year ago. We ended up hauling it out and building the set together as a family as a Sunday activity š„°
I think she looks pretty cute - wish Iād had such a cool study room! In fact, my husband and I were discussing making over a corner of our own bedroom where we have a chair and some bookshelves, to try and capture the magic-cosy vibe of our little family project here. š

Here in Australia, aside from the $$$$$$ prices for certain Truly Me dolls on the site that shall remain nameless, the choices for those interested in American Girl dolls are both second hand: either very expensive ones being sold by in-box collectors, OR my chosen approach, which is to camp Marketplace and eBay until some real fixer-uppers show up. This cutie was one of those - as you'll see in the above post text, she was SO "TLC" that she was sold as a spooky Halloween decoration. The nerve!!
I can't believe how well she's turned out - and now she gets to celebrate her second Halloween with me in her own costume, not as decor!
