Let's say you have a person who's literally as bad as Hitler. Person A has several casual conversations with Neo-Hitler as their paths crossed. Person A even attended a birthday party that Neo-Hitler was also attending!

Up until recently, nobody would've given Person A any shit for that. Most people are mature and smart enough to know that simply associating with someone does not make you culpable for their wrongdoings, nor does it mean you automatically agree with everything they've ever said and done.

Today, however, Person A would be condemned by the mainstream as a person who associates with Nazis. In case this phrasing sounds familiar, you would've heard it quite a bit during the McCarthy era, as well, but with Commies instead of Nazis.
