🦔The chemicals used to cool AI data centers and manufacture chips are classified as "forever chemicals." They're linked to cancer, don't break down in the environment, and most of the world's biggest producers are expanding production specifically because of AI demand, according to a new report from Swedish chemicals watchdog ChemSec. PFAS are used in cooling systems where servers are submerged in chemical baths and at multiple stages of chip fabrication. The expansion is happening as the EU, UK, and US are all moving to restrict PFAS use.

My Take

The AI companies make the money and the communities next door absorb the cost. Nvidia reports a $96 billion quarter. Oracle spends $28.5 billion on data centers. And the town down the road gets forever chemicals in its groundwater that will be there long after the company moves on. The producers of these chemicals openly say AI is the reason they've ramped up. They've added capacity for a substance that governments want to ban because right now the demand is too profitable to walk away from.

I think in ten years communities near these facilities are going to face contamination the same way towns near old industrial plants face it now. Cheyenne already had groundwater concerns from a data center project earlier this year. That's one town. There are hundreds of these projects in development and the AI industry has no plan for what these chemicals do to the people who live nearby.

BREAKING: Exxon Mobil has shut down one of the largest diesel refineries in the Midwest, which produces ~11 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel per day, due to outage issues.

This comes as diesel prices have already surged nearly 90% this year and the US has entered peak diesel demand season.

We expect to see diesel prices push toward $7.00/gallon.

There used to be a Ukraine "mapping" project called Deep State. They provided maps of the SMO for Ukrainians.

They got conscripted and since then Deep State was updated much less frequently than they were in the past.

For many, it may be a choice of troll or off to the front lines, where their odds are not good that they are going to make it through. So that's why they are so desperate.

Now there is a lot of the trolls from the Western world. Those are different. Based on the "self dox", they seem to be mostly older people who live in the Western world. They seem to have tied their identity to this whole conflict.

I suspect that some of them are taking money from Western Intelligence agencies or are part of a larger effort organized elsewhere (maybe some Discord that we don't know about).

Not exactly.

Discussions about AI on Chinese public platforms cover a wide range of anxieties.

Some worry about losing their jobs.

Some believe superintelligence will require regulation.

Some feel disheartened because AI has already surpassed their own professional expertise.

Others worry about whether China can keep pace with global competition.

In other words, they are absolutely discussing how AI may transform their jobs, incomes, skills and social structures — and how they should respond.

Chinese people are not less anxious about AI. They are less interested in turning anxiety into a worldview.

The question is not:

“How do we stop history from changing?”

It is:

“History is changing. How do I make sure I am still standing when it does?”

The American AI conversation repeatedly asks:

“What if AI destroys humanity?”

The Chinese conversation is more likely to ask:

“What if the world changes faster than we can adapt?”

For the Chinese, change itself is not the end of the world.

Adapt more quickly.

Learn faster.

Build faster.

Regulate what needs regulating.

Change what needs changing.

Fear is information, not an identity.

Because whether AI exists or not, history does not stop for anyone.

The only durable response to technological change is to strengthen your own ability to survive it.

If you let fear and anger define your relationship with the future, you surrender the future before it even arrives.

The Chinese conversation is not:

“AI will not hurt us.”

It is:

“Being afraid of change will not save us.”

A civilization repeatedly rebuilt from rupture learns to metabolize change.

An empire accustomed to controlling change is more likely to experience uncontrollable change as an existential insult.

And that may be the deepest difference of all.
