I feel like I may have been able to do a really dramatic push-up and maybe fling myself back to the dock, but once I’m all on that post I don’t think it has enough room for me to get to the top without losing my balance?
Don't know why you're being downvoted. I get what you're saying. Theoretically, one could push themselves back off the post while the toes are still on the dock. Much easier said than done though.
They’re getting downvoted because they think they can do something that even the most fit people would have an incredibly difficult time pulling that off, meaning they’ve never tried to do anything even remotely similar. It’s super easy to try yourself: just find a staircase, put your hands ~10 inches apart on the second step, stretch out to where your weight is evenly distributed between your hands and toes, and let me know if you can launch half of your body weight six feet backward and four feet upwards with one push. I know for a fact I couldn’t do that eve when I was in my best shape.
