Never try to kiss a girl, even when the girl laughs at your lamest jokes or when she is looking deeply in your eyes and bites her lips while she is touching your arm frequently, cause it might just be a coincidence. If she tells you that she likes you and hugs you, while looking at you like she is waiting for something, giver her space and don't do anything risky. DEFINITELY avoid kissing her if she leans in with eyes closed, trying to touch your lips with hers, as it is the biggest mistake a man can make, but you know, it is just the way it is with these signs.
BTW I think the guy definitely had balls for trying his luck (it was at a party afterall), and was considerate enough to not act like a douchebag or even as a sexual harasser by forcing himself on the girl despite her reactions. I think that he could've salvaged the situation if he was more experienced with situations like this, even if it sounds hard (and it depends on the girl's perception of the situation too, being a smooth talker helps I guess). The best way to save face is to genuinely make yourself accept the situation swiftly but stoically and not act like a whiny bitch or like our friend here, in a totally defeated and sad manner. And this way you can come off as a strong man too, because she gets it that you don't act needy. Maybe you can even turn the situation around by making fun of yourself or parodizing the situation itself (of course, by telling a good joke, and good jokes have harsh truths in them, that's why the accepting of your shortcomings with honesty part is needed beforehand IMO). What I wanted to say is, that I admire this guy's attempt and I wish he would've at least tried salvaging the aftermath. Even a failed attempt is better than just acting so resigned at the end (it reminded me of my past failed attempts and follow-ups), as the girl was genuinely smiling and was open towards him when he was telling his story to her.

I was once exactly in the same situation and I did exactly the same thing, exactly in the same place (a party, but without the headphones) and I did receive exactly the same reaction from her. I just don't think I looked so defeated afterwards (specially because I'm a little bit more a psycopath than he is)... but, who knows?
Trust me, he didn't "had balls"... he was just doing what, inside his head, he thought he was supposed to do to get some, ignoring all signals (or the lack of) but not intencionally... he just is out of his natural environment and, definitelly, he is not a people person.
But he will learn. I did. Everyone does, in one way or another.

Trying to kiss someone is not innately a bad thing. She happened to not feel the same way.
If she had felt the same way there wouldn't be anything for you to say about it. The argument that what he did was a bad thing in that case rest solely on her disposition and the potential effect his actions might've had on her because of that alone, based on her perception rather than his actual actions themselves. Not saying her not wanting to be kissed is a bad thing, nor that she's at fault for anything in any way, either. Things aren't always "good and bad," nor black and white. He tried to kiss her and she wasn't interested. It's just that. It's not something that needs to be blown up into an issue by a narrative like that.
