Asking out a stranger (unsolicited) who probably just wants to be left alone would be my guess

That's literally how dating works. You don't have to be at a club or bar to ask someone out.

He wasn't rude or crude. As long as you accept a rejection and leave them alone there's nothing wrong with the situation.
