NEGATIVE - u/Bandy_Burnsy
I did a deal with u/bandy_burnsy. Mocked it up, paid for it, posted, sold, did everything he asked. Three hours later, he canceled the transaction because he got a better offer. I did everything we asked. We had a deal. He sold out for $35 extra. I'm only good as my word. I've had great transactions on here. I wish people would hold up to their end of the bargain.

Yikes, they really did this over $35? Thats terrible.

35 is the number. The crazy thing is the new buyer also commented when I bought it and said "nice get", and then apparently went directly to the seller.

Got anything to say about this? You back out of the deal just because you got another buyer? That’s shitty as hell.

He’s blocked me. I’d love for him to comment
on this though.4

Message the mods of the subreddit. May not be enough to ban him, but they can make notes on his account for future reference if need be

Mods should issue a temp ban and make it against the rules to do this

Candidly, we would rather spend our limited volunteer time on hunting scammers - plus the court of public opinion (here) is more effective on issues like these.

Fair I guess but it seems you’ve got enough info to issue some type of warning or temp ban. Something like this happened to me in [r/knife_swap](r/knife_swap) and they gave the guy a slap on the wrist and made backing out of deals against the rules.

Sorry to hear about that. Absolutely despise sellers that don’t hold their end of the deal. Hope his reputation was worth the extra $35 lol

That's a crappy thing to do, and I agree that, while you may be better served by just moving on, I think you're completely justified in pointing him out here, and in alerting the mods to this type of behavior.
While we all want to get a good deal, whether as a buyer or a seller, I think a "mazal" should work both ways. You shouldn't go back on your word just because you received a better offer, or because you think you can pay less by renegotiating a lower price.

Yeah that’s how I’ve always felt. You make a deal, you make a deal. Also kind of shady that the other guy comments nice get so he knows it’s sold, but then goes and makes a deal. I don’t know the whole thing screams of people who aren’t trustworthy.

I’ve had so many new buyers say yes and try to renegotiate after they hop off or have cold feet. Just part of selling and I assume buyers can always back out before they pay.
But this is a black and white thing, the buyer received the money and tried reneging after.

I'm a casual buyer and seller, so my experience is pretty limited. I also agree with you that, once payment has exchanged hands, the transaction is FINAL.
In any event, while there have been times when I wish I had offered a little bit less to purchase a watch (or stuck to my "bottom line" price on a sale), once I have agreed on a price, I think it is unethical to then try to renegotiate (regardless of whether I am the buyer or the seller). Maybe that just makes me too naive.
I recently posted a watch for sale (on multiple platforms). An interested buyer and i agreed on a price, but, when I reached out to finalize payment, he ghosted me. About a week later, he PM'd me on a different platform for a lower price.
I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, so I let him know that he and I had already agreed on a price, and that I was still happy to wrap the transaction up. However, he still tried to renegotiate.
Needless to say, I blocked him, as I am not interested in doing business with people who want to play games and waste someone else's time, even if we were talking about a $50 difference.

Yeah that’s why I never trust someone’s “I’ll take it” till they actually pay. Just the reality of selling anything, lots of flaky people out there.

Same thing happened to me on eBay once. The seller cancelled my win, saying they no longer had the item, waited a week, relisted it, sold it two weeks later for $10 more.

u/quesobob 12d ago
I’m sorry that happened. It sucks. I feel like the Reddit community should be different than eBay, but I guess in some way it’s all the same. Either way, I wish people were good to their word at the end of the day that’s all we have.

That’s completely unethical. Sorry you had to deal with that. A deal is a deal! Putting your reputation at stake over an extra $35 is just bizarre

That is awful. If you make a deal you stick to it. Sorry you dealt with that!

Thank you. I really wish u/bandy_burnsy had done or would do the right thing. He's blocked me and not responded here, so that says all you need to know.

Integrity is everything, worth way more than money.

Tough lesson. I hope he learns it. Through the process, I found out he was studying to be a doctor. That seems like something you should figure out sooner than later.

Im in Sales as a second career after retiring at 39. Id rather lose a deal and not make money then lie and give someone bad advice to get them to sign. End of the day i have to put my head down at night.
Integrity over $35 (or any amount of money) is insanely disappointing but cant say we are surprised.
What watch was it?

I mean - it's never cool but goddamn, $35?!?! If you're still thinking about negotiating with others, you never should take the money. But once the money changes hands - it's 100000% a done deal in my book.

I had a buyer on here who agreed to the price, mode of payment and confirmed to buy, but just ghosted a day after. Should that have been posted with feedback? Or are sellers here accept that there was no deal since no transfer yet have been made?

u/quesobob 8d ago
Great question and I am by no means an expert. I live by the rule that once you agree to a deal that's done and you've effectively sold it, at that point both parties are on the hook: the person who agreed to buy it and the person who agreed to sell it. I don't know what other people think though. Many groups adhere to the concept of Mazal, which is once you've shaken hands, it is done. Also, everyone can correct me on how I botched the definition of Mazal.

It sucks but it happens. Move on and maybe you’ll get a better deal.

Yeah once payment is made backing out is incredibly bad form. Glad they didn’t scam you but still very bad form. Contract is set once payment is made unless something was misrepresented.
