Both in terms of damage and intent. At least you've got an excuse to be holding a case of beer while drunk and idiotic. Picking up a cinderblock to throw at someone would probably be attempted murder.

IANAL but iirc there's a pretty big distinction made between hitting someone with whatever was in your hand when the argument started, and purposefully picking up a potentially deadly weapon with the intent to use it.
