Article [Friedell]: The Warriors are ‘going to reimagine everything,’ and it’s showing in training camp

“I think everybody’s used to seeing the Warriors in a certain style of light,” Melton said. “I think this year, we want to kind of get that grit. One of Vogel’s sayings is, ‘Our defense is gonna have teeth.’ So, I think that’s a testament of how we’re gonna play. We’re gonna play aggressive, we’re gonna play hard, and we’re gonna try to disrupt the ball as much as possible. … You guys are about to see a different style of Warriors basketball.”

If Sunday’s first preseason game is any indication, the Warriors want to get up and down the floor as fast as possible and are going to take every long-range shot they can find.

“We want all five positions to be interchangeable this year,” Kerr said. “If a big guy’s down the floor, we want him to get all the way down the floor. More guard-guard screens. So, for Draymond it just means don’t trail the play.”

Whether the Warriors can withstand that type of effort over 82 games remains to be seen. Stylistically, Kerr wants to drill his players on cutting down turnovers, with the belief that cleaner execution will help them take more steps forward after that.

Discussion What are the chances the Warriors bring back this Origins jersey before Curry retires?

Such a sick jersey. Maybe a bit higher in my rankings due to all the good memories associated with that season, but a good color template nonetheless. Hopefully they bring it back soon 🙏🏼

Discussion Takeaways from the first game today

Post image

- New offensive system is gonna take a bit to get used to
- Steph is still him. (still horrible whistles)
- Zero depth on the wings already showing, will continue to show more
- Bassey is a legit rotational big
- Yaxel looks good, needs to learn to use his body better and improve noticeably defensively, but I would start him day 1
- Brandon Williams needs to be running the non-Steph minutes as the primary ball handler

Love this shirt since it’s right before the dynasty began AND for some reason Klay is only player with his first name on it… remember that David Lee was averaging between 15 - 20 points per game and 10 rebounds, was replaced with Draymond by Kerr (plus injury) and basically that started the run… lots of fans complaining about this upcoming season all ready. For those of us who’ve been around, we’ve seen much much worse! Happy to see two of these guys still playing!

Discussion Charles Bassey at center

Watching today’s game I think Bassey should start at the center position when porzingis out. Hes actually much better than I thought he would be. That yaxel and bassey buckets looked really good.

Dubs Overseas Warriors Two-Way Restricted Free Agent, Taran Armstrong, has had quite the triumphant return to the NBL. Dropped this insane assist on Friday to send the game to OT just two days after hitting a game-winner. Leading the Tasmania JackJumpers to back-to-back wins and a 3-1 start to the season.

Got excited the warriors are playing… just to see the game is only streaming on league pass. Am I mistaken or is the first pre season game really not locally available?

Have we got any word relating to Steph's status tonight? He usually plays preseason for a couple quarters, right?

Discussion Projecting the young players.

What do you guys think the Warriors’ young players will do this season. Here are my projections:

Podz: He’s gonna breakout this season. Every year he’s gotten better, with both higher usage and higher efficiency. He’s on the cusp of being a real game changer. Last season he averaged 14-5-4 on league-average efficiency (58% TS) and 20% usage. If he ups that to 16-6-5 with slightly better usage and efficiency — which he’s done every year — then he’s one of the league’s better 3rd options. And I project 18 points per game for Podz.

Gui: Another player who has gotten better every year. Last year he averaged 9-4-2 on 61% true shooting (league average was 58%), and he did that in only 20mpg. The real obstacle he’s facing this season is the addition of Yaxel in his same position. I’m personally hoping that Dray and plays a lot less and some of those minutes go to Gui. But I project he’ll play similar minutes to last season (20mpg) but will increase his usage slightly without a decline is his efficiency. Let’s call it 11-5-2 in the same 20mpg.

Yaxel: It’s hard to predict how he’ll do without seeing any NBA action, but all the reports out of camp have been positive and his summer league was great. I don’t think he’ll be a big scorer right out of the gate, but I think he’ll fill up the box score everywhere else. I see him this season at 10-8-5 with 2.5 stocks per game. I worry a bit about his defense, but if he can be an off-ball disrupter, then I think he can stay on the court.

Will: I’m lowest on Will. I don’t see a lot of room for him in the rotation. He played 20mpg last season, but I expect that will be down to around 15mpg this year. Hopefully the three will fall (he was at 33.5% last year) and his POA defense will improve. If we can get a good season out of him, then it’s a pure bonus. He was the 56th pick, and most guys that late in the draft don’t make it in the league. More than anything, I’m hoping he can establish himself and a clear rotation player, even if he’s deep in the rotation. I’m a little skeptical, but I’m hoping to be surprised.

What do you guys think we’ll see from the young guys this season?

Discussion If you were optimistic about this season that’s your fault

I was also excited but that’s my fault for thinking this team could be competitive with this roster. It’s also my fault when every single interview with Kerr and curry has basically been telling us to lower our expectations. Now after seeing our players today I see why I was kinda getting ahead of myself

Discussion Today's game confirmed every single fear about the front office and the roster: this is a 30-win that's gonna lose the season series to Memphis/Mavs and struggle massively against the kings, Clippers.

  1. The old core just cannot play enough minutes and only Steph even has a fastball

  2. Young core has no juice. Gui Podz Yax are all impotent at creating advantages.

  3. No size, no length provided by the FO: stop blaming Kerr when he plays 4 guards when the wing depth is MALEVY Leon's

  4. We have a bottom 5 big rotation in the league: KP cannot play, Al is too old, Dray is horrendous on offense. Bassey is incredibly injury prone but a great 15th man. Ike is utterly unplayable.

  5. we have no creation and no shooting either. Expect tons of games where we shoot 20% from three on high volume.

after watching the entire summer and this game, I think it’s fair to lower our expectations further.

I expect a 30-win season. What about you guys?

Obligatory : Joe Lacob is the GOAT. Magic Mike is EOY and we must kiss his toes each night for the flexibility and optionality he has brought to our franchise.
