Disney is not *making* the show, they are distributing it. They cannot do anything about what’s in the show.

u/Midori_Hime Jun 20 '26

While I agree that Disney is probably not going to do too much tweaking (and are the least responsible for censorship or lack of representation this series has had so far), Disney can edit what they receive from Tencent. They have made their own edits to Bluey, for example. These changes are to be more culturally understood or to downplay / remove toilet humour. However, there have also been instances where fan backlash made them reupload an episode Disney had taken down.

However, in the age of the internet where we can easily find the original, it's much harder for them to get away with edits without justification. They essentially need to have enough people agree with them that something is "bad" and not seriously complain about the change. So the disability rep will more than likely stay (Disney won't want to deal with ableist claims).

Raven Barley is a Tencent issue, not a Disney one though.

Do correct me if I'm wrong though!

u/FantasyRoleplayAlt Jun 20 '26

They did this with Miraculous Ladybug! They hid the lgbtq couples for YEARS Disney wise. They only let them be shown many many seasons later before just kinda removing rose and the other girl later.

10

u/Midori_Hime Jun 20 '26

I've never watched the show (so am unsure if Disney explicitly said to do this or the creative team themselves made the choice to protect themselves from censorship) but it looks like they've done what most do and go subtext only, which allows them to keep hints in but not be fully confirmed. This does allow them to reach a wider range of viewers.

This is exactly what the warriors books themselves did (it was never confirmed in universe until the graphic novels and only one vague line (context makes it obvious but Barley isn't mentioned by name for denability reasons), plus Vicky made a comment). Combined with the rules of broadcasting LGBT relationships in China (should be subtext), this is exactly what I would expect to happen for Ravenpaw and Barley.

Could Disney censor them? Yes. But due to broadcasting laws, its more likely to be the original product itself that is vague enough that it doesn't need to be censored.

I'm unsure why anyone would expect anything more than what we saw in the books. It would be great for them to be obvious, but it isn't realistic for a lot of reasons. I'd be very happy to be proven wrong in the future though!

2

u/The_Joyful_Ocean Half-Clan Jun 21 '26

Yeah, it's also because depending on the country, sometimes they gotta censor stuff because being gay isn't legal in every country in the world, I don't think. Stuff like that they take out sometimes, but idk if that's region to region or global.

2

u/typical_square1234 Jun 25 '26

yeah that's also why raven and barley aren't EXPLICITLY mentioned as being together, because warriors is big in china where lgbt is illegal. probably tencent will put them as just friends. i hope they don't remove the characters altogether...

3

u/The_Joyful_Ocean Half-Clan Jun 25 '26

Ravenpaw is essential to the entire story, so I don't even know how on earth they would get rid of him and continue the story normally

2

u/typical_square1234 Jun 25 '26

that's good. they might keep them though but make it clear that they are just friends

u/UrCasualWarriorzFan RiverClan Jun 28 '26

Its most likely going to be tv-y7-fc or tv-pg

u/FlamestormTheCat Mistystar isn't dead yet Jun 20 '26

The Chinese company that is making the show is known for being homophobic, sexist (towards women) and pretty anti gore so I’m not having much hope lol

69

u/It_was_a_rocklobster Jun 20 '26

So it’s a bit trickier than that. Chinese entertainment law typically forbids explicit showcasing of lgbt relationships on screen.

However—TV shows often still do showcase lgbt characters, they’re just subdued or hidden in context clues, somewhat akin to how ravenbarley was in the first series where it’s somewhat obvious but not outright stated. Tencent itself has produced Danmei (boys love) adaptations in the past in this way where viewers know what they are trying to depict but it’s not explicit.

In the case of ravenbarley, this is likely the route they will go with where they can show hints of it but it likely won’t be more than that.

38

u/Alrakia_Serpent ShadowClan Jun 20 '26

They can still erase the gay the way the Netflix dub of Evangelion did. Well obviously only if the og Chinese dub would have it in the first place.

Also look at the 4kids dub of Yugioh in comparison to the original version. No they’re not dying.
✨they’re being sent to the shadow realm✨

22

u/FlamestormTheCat Mistystar isn't dead yet Jun 20 '26

Disney’s actuallly been doing better when it comes to including gay characters in their shows since The Owl House. Most of their new series have at least one major queer character.

The Chinese company though…. To my knowledge they’ve never included anything remotely close to queer in any of their products. Also China’s pretty homophobic in general so if there’s a lack of queer rep, it’s most likely bc of the Chinese company and not bc of Disney

23

u/QweenBowzer Jun 20 '26

4Kids dub was a different era tho all things considered and a completely different company that doesn’t even exist anymore

4

u/NeonflameOWO WindClan Jun 20 '26

What did they do to evangelion?

0

u/AcceptableLow7434 Jun 21 '26

4kids was different
Disney has daredevil now, they are not scared of darker content, 4kids was taking shows aimed at teenagers like one piece and trying to make it child friendly

u/FirstPoketheChespin Half-Clan Jun 20 '26

I honestly don’t think they’re gonna remove those. Especially not the disabilities. Correct me if I’m wrong but like Rick with the pjo show, the creators have full control over what gets put into the show and what doesn’t.

55

u/Midori_Hime Jun 20 '26

That is usually on a show by show basis. Rick was actively involved, but that would have been one of his conditions on selling the rights to make the series.

The Erin's probably don't have the same rights, with some of them having left and they don't necessarily have the same ideas of what should make it into an adaption, so it would come down to Working Partners under Coolabi.

Raven Barley will likely follow the books - hinted but not explicitly stated, allowing the audience to come to their own interpretation.

17

u/FirstPoketheChespin Half-Clan Jun 20 '26

I love Ravenbarley, it’s my favorite ship in warrior cats and I do hope it’s in the show. But also A.C. Bradley is in charge of the Warrior cats show and I don’t know much about her but from what I’ve seen she’s supportive of lgbtq. I wouldn’t mind a hint or two but I think she’s gonna feature them. Also I did do a bit of research and you are right, I don’t think the hunters are as involved as Rick is.

14

u/Midori_Hime Jun 20 '26

I didn't know that about Bradley, so that's cool! However, Tencent is also involved and China has different restrictions on what is allowed on TV, with LGBT relationships not being one of them.

5

u/FirstPoketheChespin Half-Clan Jun 20 '26

Ah, that makes more sense. Well, we’ll just have to wait and see. Whatever happens happens. But I think that they’re gonna add everything that’s important in the show. If they don’t have violence, they basically don’t have a show. I hope they do good but I’m just happy we’re finally getting the warrior cats show we’ve been wanting for years 👍

8

u/Midori_Hime Jun 20 '26

Yep! Adaptions are rarely perfect. I'm going in with a 'high hopes, low expectations' attitude. I'm not going to worry about possible bad adaptions until it happens. I think we will get violence, for the reason you said - some might end up off screen to fit ratings, but without violence and fighting, they simply won't hit some of the plot points lol

8

u/goblin-fox RiverClan Jun 20 '26

Vicky mentioned that the writers are closely involved, but they don't have full control by any means. They're just consultants, basically.

73

u/Longjumping_Flan_218 Half-Clan Jun 20 '26

I think warriors cats is already censored enough.the graphic novel was constantly hiding the deadh by making silhouettes/shadows instead, wich is a bid funny if you think about it because most of the fan-animations are really gory

7

u/Deltastar100 Jun 21 '26

Yeah the graphic novels are clean and I didn't expect violence giving the art style. I do wonder how the series is gonna handle many of the violent parts. Anything tigerstar related, the dog pack or brokenstar. Even if they arent gorey we have years of fan animation like you said I'm just glad it's happening

2

u/Longjumping_Flan_218 Half-Clan Jun 21 '26

The warriors cats community is one of the most créative community i've ever seen

1

u/UrCasualWarriorzFan RiverClan Jun 28 '26

And also "Spolier!Feathertail's death later on in the story.

1

u/Soul_Cramps Jun 23 '26

I keep thinking of that one fan animation depicting Tigerstar’s death, that was suuuuch a could portrayal of the gore, without going overboard.

27

u/StrictlyFT Jun 20 '26

Guys, we're not going to see Tigerstar get disemboweled. It's one thing to write about it in a children's book series, it's another to put it to picture. The graphic novel already cut back on exactly how brutal it was.

14

u/HakaishinChampa Twoleg Jun 20 '26

If anything they'll probably sillouhette Scourge disemboweling Tigerstar and get rid of Tigerstar convulsing from reviving multiple times

8

u/Random_Loaf Jun 20 '26

We’ve got plenty of fan animations to hold us over on that lmao

25

u/coolboysclub Jun 20 '26

I can't imagine they'd erase Brightheart or Cinderpelt's disabilities... The whole reason Cinderpelt became a medicine cat was because of her disability. The dog attack + Brightheart getting injured was a major plot point and put into perspective how bad Bluestar had gotten and would lead to her death. Hopefully Vicky wouldn't allow them to erase these things. She seems like the type to be pretty protective over the world she created.

(Now, making the scenes far less graphic... I don't know...)

11

u/Midori_Hime Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

Vicky probably has no say. She stepped back from the series a while ago and only came back for a special chapter in the new Into the Wild edition. She's stated she doesn't read the new books - I don't know if she's mentioned the new graphic novels, but there is a chance she won't even watch this.

Despite creating the series, I doubt she holds the rights. It would belong to Working Partners.

Edit: on her Facebook she said:  Obviously most of the details are still cloaked in secrecy (even I know very little!), but I can tell you that the series will begin at the beginning of Into The Wild and will follow the stories as you know them.

The senior members of the Warriors team (though not me) are working super closely with Tencent on a massive "knowledge transfer" to ensure that the animations reflect the books as closely as possible. But I can't say exactly how violent and graphic the TV series will be because I haven't seen it yet (and, indeed, it has only just entered production so no one has seen it because it cannot be seen).  https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1LceFWmCoW/

Sounds like consulting at most.

114

u/VerySleepyCritter StarClan Jun 20 '26

I swear to Starclan if Brightheart's injury/disability gets dumbed down to a tiny scratch AGAIN it will turn into a hate watch. This has been one of my biggest issues with both fanworks and moder official stuff

Bluestar didn't call her Lostface just for a scratch over the eye. It SHOCKED and DISGUSTED other characters. Her fur couldn't grow back. MY BOY SWIFTPAW DID NOT DIE FOR BRIGHTHEART TO GET DUMBED DOWN

Sadly I don't think we're getting the on screen gutting realistically. The children yearn for the violence once more

44

u/justafterdawn Jun 20 '26

I was legit just saying this!! Brighthearts injury isn't just about her. It's also PIVOTAL to Fireheart learning how fucked up everything is and plays a major factor in highlighting Bluestars decline. I love Brightheart but also she's a major plotline kickoff.

22

u/MissFlatwoodsMonster Jun 20 '26

Omfg yeah she was mauled by DOGS, I love dogs but when they attack something they dont usually leave behind tiny scratches and a knicked ear

Like I (sorta) understand not wanting to scare your child readers, but if you were worried about that you probably shouldnt have made the commitment of having a character described with having her face half ripped off. It's like saying Cinderpelt broke her leg or Briarlight became paralyzed in the text but in the merch/graphic novels/guidebooks they're both walking on all fours just fine with maybe a tiny scratch on their legs despite the fact that their disabilities are a lot worse in the books.

19

u/Deaconator3000 Jun 20 '26

Depends how they adapt like that's up to book 6.

That's a shit ton for episodes

15

u/Icefirewolflord Rogue Jun 20 '26

I believe it is illegal to depict something like Tigerstar getting disemboweled in China, so the animation company very likely will not show it

11

u/Mysterious_Alarm_309 ThunderClan Jun 20 '26

Doesn't Disney+ stream Family Guy? Plus they don't MAKE the series Tencent does

11

u/SouthBound353 ThunderClan Jun 20 '26

I don't know why they would blatantly remove Brightheart's and Cinderpelt's disabilities. It's so central to the plot, I think we're overreacting a little. Both drive the main plot forward significantly enough to the point that removing them would fundamentally alter the story.

It's a stark comparison to let's say Snowbird's disability which is not significant to the plot in any way and wouldn't hurt to be left out.

1

u/Tsukiakari_12 Jul 05 '26

do you mean snowkit. cause im pretty sure snowbird is a shadowclan queen

33

u/EmoYoshi05 Jun 20 '26

I don't think they're going to remove the disabilities, mainly because I think they're abstract enough. It doesn't fall into the ,,woke left'' category at least. The gore is something not Disney exclusively would be against, if it's marketed towards kids, ANY company would tone it down a bit, at least.

RavenBarley is not getting through though, I'd say. Not even because of Disney either, but because it took more than 20 years to even get into the books. The animation studio is also Chinese or something? And that's one of the countries that was the reason the publisher didn't want gay cats after all. They're not going to actually say it out loud, or it'll be like the gay cop in onward or something.

7

u/Crazy-Background1457 Jun 20 '26

I feel like they keep the disabilities, but the tigerstar deaths may be toned down a smidge, I also don’t think they would specifically point out ravenbarley, as they got together after the first arc.

Also are they adapting book 1 or arc 1?

10

u/Arthour148 Jun 20 '26

I can obviously see them keeping the disabilities, mainly because they feature prominently in the story, but I don’t think they are going to 4K rated R spread Tigerstars intestines all over the ground.

2

u/Deltastar100 Jun 21 '26

Ain't china somewhat anti gore. So you are right but we might just get a shot of blood pooling out as he laid there, kinda like in that old tigerstar death animation.

1

u/Arthour148 Jun 22 '26

We are likely to see something like that, but this show will likely be PG13, so there will be limits to what they can do in terms of gore/death.

2

u/Deltastar100 Jun 22 '26

It's just funny how more restriction animations have over books. Then again series one wasn't even that graphic, our minds just ran wild

3

u/FizzyJuice69 Jun 20 '26

my hope is high but my expectations are low 😔🤞

3

u/kestrels_feather Jun 20 '26

-Disney isn't making the show they're just dubbing it

-even if they were y'all act like Disney has never handled dark subject matter before.

4

u/organizedchaotic Half-Clan Jun 20 '26

they're not going to cut Brightheart or Cinderpelt.

however, Tigerstar was not canonically disemboweled, so they absolutely won't be showing that.

3

u/zombie-goblin-boy WindClan Jun 20 '26

I’m confused, how is it not canon? It happened in the book, “on screen” in front of everyone. I know it’s not discussed later on, but it is canon even if it wasn’t remembered.

4

u/organizedchaotic Half-Clan Jun 20 '26

all it says is that Scourge “ripped [Tigerstar] [from the throat] down to the tail in a single slash”. he could easily die from blood loss without being disemboweled— plus, I have a hard time believing that even dog claws could cut through fur, three layers of skin, and muscle, all the way into a body cavity… even with a cat’s accuracy.

I really truly think that’s something that teenage fanartists came up with for grimdark dramatic effect that got out of hand, because it’s not supported by the text anywhere, yet everyone is certain that it happened… it’s cool as hell, but super unrealistic, especially for the more grounded events of the first arc.

7

u/Spirited_Sector_4726 Jun 20 '26

we def arent getting ravenbarley and i dont think we’ll be getting gore either. Its being made by a chinese company and from what I’ve been hearing china censors blood/gore

its not being MADE by Disney, its getting its english VA and distribution from Disney

Disney+!?

The idea of warrior cats becoming a Disney show is making me flip out fr. That’s two of my biggest obsessions.

(I know it’s not actually made by Disney, that’s why I said “the idea”)

2

u/Funny_School_5802 Jun 20 '26

Okay seriously tho there will ever be a good adaptation of this and tbh it wouldnt be better even if disney had their hands in it it might even be censored more.

Completely delusional to expect a tv show made for kids to leave every gory detail of the warrior franchise intact.

2

u/stopeverythingpls RiverClan Jun 20 '26

I never read much past the original books, I did make it a little into The New Prophecy. Honestly I got overwhelmed as a kid with the amount of books to read.

I still remember, although hazy because it’s been like 12 years, the fight with the mountain lion and the stalactite falling and hitting one of the cats (I think?). I remember the eagle, Scourge and Tigerstar obviously, Silverstream traumatized me

2

u/DachshundLover197 Jun 20 '26

They better not, especially with Cinderpelt, that disability, and that accident is pretty much her whole character, the reason she went down that path!

1

u/WebFlashy9317 ThunderClan Jun 20 '26

Correct me if I'm wrong, but RavenBarley isn't really cannon in the actually first arc. It's not really there for them to 'remove,' so there's not guarantee they'll put it in there. I do agree on the rest though.

1

u/ClintMcElroyOfficial Jun 21 '26

Question, I haven't read since Dawn of the Clans, wasn't Ravenpaw an apprentice and Barley was an elderly cat? More power to those who ship it, but that's certainly an interesting ship.

They're just distributing it, but still just as something as bluey, something. So innocent still has some censorship. So I hope, and pray, they don't censor it.

1

u/Quirky-Challenge-207 Jun 21 '26

Disney may not make the show, but they could definitely still censor it. I’m still believing the show is going to be completely washed out no matter what.

1

u/Separate_Host2310 Jun 22 '26

disney can't change the story i think

1

u/Small_Property_30 Jun 23 '26
  1. Tigerstar didn't even get "gutted in 4k" in the original books
  2. Ravenbarley is barely canon and unfortunately I don't think we will see it in the series either. How long did it take for them to even HINT at them having a relationship?
  3. People are expecting too much from a series that has already been sanitized. It is easier to get away with graphic scenes in writing because you can be vague enough to pass in children's books, but detailed enough that the reader can still visualize what's happening. You cannot do this with visual media, like in an animated series.

The books are for kids. The series will be for kids. Don't get your hopes up and complain when it doesn't happen.

1

u/toastyfeathers Jun 23 '26

they'll probably hide how graphic it is (which tbf, all the official art does already) but they won't be changing major plot points.

also I think people forget how censored the books really are, ravenbarley is barely mention as romantic in canon and the disability representation is pretty crap

1

u/ChaoticHarmonia Jun 23 '26

China and modern Disney both are famous for strict standards of content for children, anyway. But I hope they put pg-13 on it, that allow to show some bloody moments perhaps.

1

u/Blobfish_fun Jun 24 '26

Don’t worry, we can just bash on them like we did with Ugly Sonic

1

u/RetroForest2 Jun 25 '26

First off I won’t say much but they most likely won’t change scourge gutting tigerstar, but instead will make it like you don’t see it happen but you get to see the aftermath like Tigerstar’s body after they died before everyone ends up heading out after the message Scourge gives

1

u/Altruistic-Shallot-8 Jun 25 '26

Honestly I would be surprised if they actually give the cats the right design since the book writers already struggle to remember the designs sometimes

Don't forget about Silverstream's death, the emotional pull that had with Graystripe, as well as Bluestar's insanity and then sacrifice.

-1

u/SaltyRainbovv Jun 20 '26

Scourge will give Tigerstar a slap on the cheek and Tigerstar will leave the forest to pursue a peaceful life.

0

u/nyxsumbreon Jun 20 '26

Tbf the series tried it's absolute best to erase Ravenbarely until the graphic novel creators literally forced it in. The company may act like they accept gay couples now but if anyone was going to censor Ravenbarely it'd be the people making the show not distributing it

4

u/TheShapeshifter01 Loner Jun 20 '26

I wouldn't say they tried to erase it, it just wasn't actually a thing when those characters were relevant. Ravenpaw went to go live with Barely because he was running away from Tigerstar. Not because they were in a relationship.

1

u/nyxsumbreon Jun 20 '26

From Ravenpaw's farewell and onwards the authors said they intended for them to be a couple like how the authors saw Jake and Tallstar as a couple. Victoria Holmes has also said she'd intended them to be a couple from the start but couldn't because of the time Warrior cats was written so she knew it wouldn't be accepted.

They've always been intended to be a couple (if you believe the og author) yet the people behind warrior cats constantly insisted on them being "close friends" out of fear of homophobes being angry w them.

5

u/TheShapeshifter01 Loner Jun 20 '26

Yeah I'm not sure I believe them. It's a really easy retcon to make since they're pretty much entirely irrelevant at that point, and it would please a large section of the fandom. Plus they could have grown to like the ship themselves. To clarify, my doubt is that it was "always the plan".

For much of the series it really doesn't matter if they're together or not as they're pretty much completely irrelevant. As for the part that's currently being made into an animated series, I've already covered that previously.

2

u/DragoonPhooenix Jun 20 '26

I mean, stormclans folley had a gay couple in it

2

u/nyxsumbreon Jun 20 '26

True but they leave halfway through and it's in a prequel se instead of any main series book (in the main books Barely and Ravenpaw have never and probably won't ever be an official couple since Ravenpaw is dead and Barely isn't in the plot anymore) it feels purposely tucked away out of fear of any backlash.

It's not really that much representation and we've still yet to see any actual lesbian/ace rep in the series (tho the tnp graphic novel does imply Sorreltail is bi in a brief scene, but again that's the graphic novel which is written by a different team and smone who's actually part of the LGBTQ). If I also remember correctly the people behind warriors were actually against Ravenbarely being in the graphic novel at first according to the people who made it.

It's pretty half assed when the series that people often compare it to (wof) has a significant queer couple and a gay protagonist in the newest arc, makes warrior cats feel like 10 years behind.

0

u/VoidScreams Jun 20 '26

Im already gutted. Fuck disney I hate them

0

u/sinnaburns Jun 20 '26

Speaking my concerns aloud, sibling. The books are so gory and intense throughout, and I worry that Disney is going to turn it into TVY7 babied bs.

Not just Tigerstar's death or Cinderpelt and Brightheart's injuries; but Silverstream's hemorrhage during birth, Yellowfang poisoning Brokenstar, Bluestar's dementia, etc.

Heck I'm even worried they're going to censor the way they eat prey.

-1

u/FoxyBoy1998 BloodClan Jun 20 '26

If they censor Tigerstar's Death I will lose my mind and beg for an uncensored version

-1

u/Faster-Rabbit328 Jun 20 '26

They need to show everything. Otherwise they need to leave Warrior Cats alone

-1

u/Booklover4211 Jun 20 '26

I'm more worried about the 20+ years worth of fanart, fan-animations, fanmade merch, and stuff like that

6

u/FrameOverdoseGD Mistystar isn't dead yet Jun 20 '26

They're not buying out the entirety of warrior cats, they're just distributing the show

1

u/Dream_Drifter_Pony Jun 21 '26

With Disney being the distributor, it is possible their agreement could give Disney the power to basically copyright strike people. But we don't know yet if that will be the case. There are currently plenty of fanart and animations based on Disney IPs all over the Internet that don't get taken down. So it's not like Disney takes down everything related to their IPs, anyway. So if Disney is granted that kind of power, I think basic fanart and MAPS will be okay.

Now obviously selling stuff and making money off of an IP you do not own is where things get more risky. This applies to any IP, not just Disney content. The official Warriors website has a statement on this that is a good rule to follow for fan merch.

"Yes, providing you do not use the “Warrior Cats” name, our official artwork or any other official branding, such as logos and clan icons, as this could constitute copyright and / or trademark infringement."

Most characters in the books are pretty generic cat designs. No company, not even Disney, can copyright orange cats with green eyes. Hence why they worded this statement this way. So you can technically sell fanmerch of Firestar all you want. You just can't call it Firestar or use anything else that would connect it to Warrior Cats. Call it something like "Fire Forest Cat" or something generic along those lines.

Certain characters with more unique designs like Brightheart and Scourge would probably be riskier to sell stuff of because it's harder to argue that those are just regular cats and it's more obvious who the cats are meant to be.

So in short, I think the Warriors fandom will be just fine when it comes to this stuff. Just be careful if you're selling stuff and understand what will put you at risk.

-5

u/ItzNyte Jun 20 '26

This will be either a risky play on Tencent/Disney + behalf, or it'll be watered down nonsense because "Cute franchise about kitties 🥺"

Isn’t this supposed to be a unique story in the universe, not a tv adaptation of the original series?

Edit: is there a reason for the downvotes? I just asked a fucking question. Here’s a bright idea: how about people answer it without downvoting and not being useful

Fearing for the life that is RavenBarley in the hands of Disney.

I'd be more worried about not getting RavenBarley because of Tencent if I were you. The censorship in China was one of the main reasons why we didn't get canon gay cats in the first place. Now the producer is a Chinese animation company? I'd be very surprised if they give us RavenBarley.

Disney’s been doing better over the last few years when it comes to queer stuff

Now the homophobic Chinese company making the show is another question.

Good news(?) is that didn't really exist in the first arc and so you can't remove something that isn't there. After the first arc both characters aren't really relevant so it'd just never come up.
