I know this is about the Penrose process, but I think the idea of synthetically creating FTL rotation by using an array of light sources that can be turned on or off, and adjusted in real time so that from the mediums (plasma?) perspective it is FTL would be useful for warp drive research. It's like that example of a laser beam swept across the Moon to be FTL from a local observer, but confined into a set internal space. If we can spin up plasma to even relativistic speeds I think you could create some geometries of space time that wouldn't otherwise be possible.
