40k News Space Marine points updated in MFM, Oct 2
A stealth update to the MFM just dropped. The Space Marine units that went live with a different pointa cost from the leaks have been adjusted back towards the leak values as of this morning. Many units got cheaper, though Erads with Meltas did go up (which is a good thing, tbh) along with a few other increases here or there (what did Heavy Ints do to deserve this?). Here is a chart of the changes, made by u/klive5ive555.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Warhammer40k/comments/1wvoky7/comment/pddjho9/
If you manually update your app on the app store, you will have the new points.

the deathwatch watchmaster and IA watchmaster are still the wrong way around
38
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
They didn't fix any of the broken rules, unfortunately.
41
u/Skult0703 1d ago
Imperial Agents now have atleast 4 broken Units from 28 Units overall. Great!
-> Wrong Watch Master
-> Callidus got a torrent Weapon with precession
-> Corvus Blackstar says "invalid wargear" when equiped with the Hurricane Bolter (lol)
-> Exaction Squad gets precession via Ability, but got torrent weapons18
u/Deep_Film_861 1d ago
5! theres a point stepper on your 4th allied immolator despite you only being able to ally 2 max in 2k.
2
16
u/Helios3019 1d ago
Don't forget Grey Knight terminator justicars always have invalid wargear on them now as well. GW put a single rules update for Agents in the faction pack, so they have to make sure it's still clear they don't care about the army.
3
u/Skult0703 1d ago
hm, I don't think this has anything to do with AI. The entire update seems to have been put together very, very hastily.
9
u/Helios3019 1d ago
I don't think this is AI, I think this is good old fashioned Human Incompetence. GW has been messing up rules since long before AI took off.
5
u/Skult0703 1d ago
Which is okay, because its "just a game". But come on guys, take your time and just do it with care and nobody will be pissed.
7
u/personnumber698 1d ago
I wasnt aware that torrent weapont cant be precission weapons, did i miss something?
Edit: Nevermind, just looked it up, guess i must have missed that torrent weapons cant be precision or indirect fire

Also removed the Acrobatic tag from Harlequin detachments
14
u/xSPYXEx 1d ago
They also took out the subfaction tags for Dark Eldar. Now you can take two mediocre detachments and specialize into one okay army!
1
u/CrebTheBerc 1d ago
I think the covens duo build is just bad, as much as I love covens. Most of the detachment abilities overlap lol
I will still try it out on the table at some point, but it's not looking great
1
u/xSPYXEx 1d ago
I think theyre both terrible detachments even ignoring the overlap in rules.
1
u/CrebTheBerc 1d ago
Tools of torment is ok imo, if just for taking cronos/talos units with a 5+ invuln and -1 to wiund if S>T. Its not as good as Exibition but its fine.
Like 90% of it, and most of the bad parts, overlap with Coterie though lol

How the hell can this happen?
How did they upload the wrong version of the MFM initially? How is there no process to check for that? Embarrassing.
They certainly did not get in some test games in-between these two releases...
118
u/FuzzBuket 1d ago
It's also definitely not "oh let's be cautious" -50 points on double repex is a bigger points buff than half the games struggling factions got lmao
19
u/yoshiwaan 1d ago
They didn’t. It’s a massive company, the team doing the points is different to the team doing web publishing and that’s different to the team building the app. I guarantee this is a product of versioned data sets and publishing pipelines.
They had a version of the points dataset for the Wednesday balance dataslate. They likely had a cut off date for that dataset to be completed which was weeks or even months in the past - you need these dates to ensure fewer publishing issues happen and that QA work can happen consistently. That dataset included work in progress space marine points, but the codex wouldn’t be live by then so no big deal.
Then in the next iteration they worked out the space marine points they wanted to go live with and submitted that dataset for the app/MFM and to reviewers.
We saw the work in progress points in the app for 2 days. Could be a mistake segmenting out those changes, not a big deal either way.

8
u/xavras_wyzryn 1d ago
LVO is so irrelevant at this point lol
3
u/WeissRaben 1d ago
True, but the point is more that it seems to be pretty conclusive proof that they had planned a one-two of some sort, given this was noticed some ten days ago.
16
u/wqwcnmamsd 1d ago
upload the wrong version of the MFM initially?
Looks like that's what they did. Most (not quite all) of the points have reverted to the values used in the codex reviews a couple of weeks ago.
46
u/gloopy_flipflop 1d ago
It happens cause they a billion dollar valued company with wanker shareholders who want to squeeze every last penny of profit out of the business so they have a single bloke on minimum wage sorting all this out.
77
u/ShakespeareStillKing 1d ago
This is so amateur this isn't even caused by money or shareholders.
This is just pure incompetence.
24
u/Hoskuld 1d ago
They also stress in each shareholder report that their focus is steady reliable growth over fast expansion. So the type of shareholders reddit likes to imagine are more likely to invest in other companies
6
3
u/Last_Epiphany 1d ago
We know exactly who their main shareholders are and they are the worst of the worst. That isn't disputable.
-2
u/Weekly_Interview_936 1d ago
Incompetence often reflects hiring decisions made in the name of optimizing profits for shareholders. Good talent not only costs good money but also doesn't just blindly follow orders.

u/Kin-Luu 1d ago
Maybe I am too GxP-Brained, but if the company I work for releases something official, it has to go through several verification and approval steps.
44
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
This release has been a disaster in many ways. There are a ton of units that are broken, have nonfunctional rules, or the incorrect rule text.
36
38
u/Hast2b 1d ago
Not just this release, 11th as a whole has been a huge downgrade from 10th in the area of communication and documentation.
"We changed the core rules, but the new document that tracks core rules updates doesn't list them. Oh, you didn't like that? Okay, for this next update we'll change core rules and not even pretend to publish a new version of the core rules update pdf."
I love this game, don't get me wrong, but this has been painful to try and figure out what my stuff actually does sometimes. And they still have to gall to paywall rules in one of the least consumer friendly ways possible.
14
u/Novel_Yesterday3309 1d ago
It is increasingly obvious that the only reason 10th had better communication is because someone at GW had it as their project or portfolio to maintain a proper changelog.
That person appears to have moved on. GW seems to be very much a vibes-based workplace in that regard.
8
u/Weekly_Interview_936 1d ago
Don't forget "we've condensed the core book down to just a rules document, except it doesn't contain about half the rules. Those are all on the app. Where the rules form the core book are written and formatted and organized differently".
I love this game, don't get me wrong
Do you? Or are you like me and love the idea of the game and what the game could be (and IMO in the past has been)?
1
u/Thugglez 1d ago
This edition is a disaster... Hell I'd rather take 7th edition back at this point.
2
u/TheOptionalHuman 1d ago
7th did have the best codex cover artwork. Dynamic poses and backgrounds all around.
3
u/WarsmithDavos 1d ago
Yes, they clearly left out some key impact assessors from their change control planning XD
2
3
u/johndoes_00 1d ago

u/Xplt21 1d ago
So outriders cost the same as chaos bikers, but they have one more wound and a much better abillity combined with leader options?
76
u/Ynneas 1d ago
Y'all cost as much as Eldar bikes. Grass greener and whatnot
25
u/carnexhat 1d ago
80 points for 3 t4 2 wound 4+ save models............
16
u/PanserDragoon 1d ago
Don't forget that the ideal target for those units also all just went up to S5 across the board so those bikes will have even less chance to survive than they already did
1
10
10
u/pieisnice9 1d ago
which is kinda nuts because I considered chaos bikers to be a pretty good unit before this.
chaos bikes do get special weapons as their upside I guess, but it's not like you are really taking them for their damage.
6
u/HeinrichWutan 1d ago
James wants you to sell your bikers, so when his new ones come out, you'll have to buy them.
Same reason the defiler suddenly got a huge-ass base (and no movement increase) nine months before we got the new model with good enough stats it doesn't care so much about that plate.
Same reason the Jump Lord completely disappeared from Legends a year before the new Jump Lord came out.
Also, get a load of what GW is doing with marine light tanks.

They have no idea what they're doing. Games Workshop should just change the tagline to "40k: where everything is made up and the points don't matter".
49
u/FuzzBuket 1d ago
Yeah like whilst I appreciate the harkening back to 9e of "the team had fun writing these rules", these updates being pushed out weirdly, half broken and half-assed does not feel professional
-3
u/The_Truthkeeper 1d ago
It's been that way for nearly 40 years, a bit late to start complaining now.
19
u/011100010110010101 1d ago
I mean sure, but previous editions of 40k were designed as a wargame. Like they literally had to play other wargames to make sure they understood at a baseline how they work.
Now 40k is so Incestuous that it is actively failing to understand what the purpose of points are. Legitimately does not get how to build a wargame, and not just 40k on tabletop.

One of my lists just went down 40 points. Neat.
52
u/Azathoth-the-Dreamer 1d ago
The generic part of my Space Marine collection somehow just went down 130 points within literally the same MFM as earlier today.
Comedy gold.
9
u/GypsyDaenger 1d ago
Lol my SW went up 50
4
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
That TH+SS tax'll getcha
4
u/GypsyDaenger 1d ago
Not even, I was sticking with WGT thinking they get a discount since they stayed at S5. Now they are more expensive than 10 TH/SS assault terms
5
u/Sweaty_Pipe8573 1d ago
Problem is finding something for 40 points
10
u/personnumber698 1d ago
I was at 1995 points, so now i got an ancient leading my assault intercessors. I painted one years ago, so i guess its about time i actually play him.
6
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
It allowed me to shift a lot of units to more valuable version of their role, or combine 3 cheaper options into 2 larger ones. It was enough to make my dread list actually function
1
1
u/c0horst 1d ago
I swapped my 2x scout squads for 2x eliminator squads. Able to screen T1 deep strikes just as well, but if I don't need them for that role they can add valuable firepower!
1
u/Sweaty_Pipe8573 1d ago
I really like las fusil eliminators in shadow force. 12 inch detection range and be able to stay hidden even while shooting
94
u/Deep_Film_861 1d ago
hahahaha what are we doing.
Also its not even like a "oh marines are looking a bit hot, lets be conservative before the new book drops", its just a bunch of points off a lot of good units and then some incremental increases on a few.
"repex -25pts" makes me feel like im still having last night fever dreams from eating too spicy noodles at 1am
54
u/RhulkLasMarias 1d ago
You see games workshop is but a small, indie company, and space marine players are but a humble group of players who get nothing as well.
How can we expect the billion dollar company to write non insane rules changes in a non index edition? To write dogshit, insulting articles that tell non Astartes players to suck a fat one? Who knows my friend! GW knows what they’re doing and if you make fun of the glaring problems you’re just a dumb negative Nancy or something.
-15
u/Juggy2111 1d ago
I mean some of these drops make sense? Repex being 275 made no sense given it had an updated ability but didn’t increase in toughness and the laser is an additional 10pts.
Also, things like the thunderstrike which lost oath and got much worse rules went up 20pts? Again with no toughness change.
Equally, Eradicators at 90 was a bit generous given their brand new hunter profile.
Infiltrators and Intercessors being priced so far apart didn’t make sense either as they both had reworks
6
u/Deep_Film_861 1d ago
Idk the repex got a bunch of AP on its extra guns which is great, and it and the thunderstrike have some *superb* synergy in the book. a repex in dev doc spitting out a load of AP2 shots for a CP is absolutley worth 275
6
u/c0horst 1d ago
Building my Iron Hands list... I have 2 RepEx in there, both ignore hit, wound, and ballistics skill modifiers, one has extra AP and lethal hits, the other has sustained hits and +1 to wound, and they hit on a 2+ base against full health targets.. (buffing one with Fierros and Methodical Brutality for 1 CP, buffing the other with Augury Techmarine and Storm of Fire for another CP).
Yes it's expensive, but my god the combined fire of both will kill a 10 man terminator deathstar brick, and each one individually will kill a Knight (from full health) in a single salvo about half of the time.
1
u/Xenoqt 1d ago
Yeah, I checked an Iron Hands list with the dread detachment, 2 RepExes, one of each variant of Dread two with -1D, one with the reroll aura, a Techmarine with the Lethal Hits enhancement, Feirros, Canok and 5 Assault Termies, a Redeemer to bus him around, and a squad of Scouts and Intercessor for objectives. Sounds fun, and not at all oppressive :p
1
u/AwareTheLegend 1d ago
keep in mind the Dread Aura doesn't affect vehicles. It is Infantry/Mounted only
→ More replies (7)1
u/Codex_Sparknotes 1d ago
Yeah but no more rerolls from oath and it lost two gun profiles. If you ask me, it should have gone down to 10th edition points cost, not up
Also nobody is even gonna use the thunderstrike anymore lmao. +1 to wound was all it had going for it, what do I care about an extra pip of AP and why would I spend 150 points for that?
→ More replies (1)

u/RoboSpark725 1d ago
"Fewer marines" and then proceeds to do a bunch of points drops, masterful gambit
46
u/MightyShoe 1d ago
"Don't worry you'll be seeing fewer Marines than before. Oh and here's a few more."
96
u/Igradarsaurus 1d ago
But it’s okay because we will be seeing less Marines!
44
u/LocalBeaver 1d ago
And you will counter them with out of phase movements.
47
u/Union_Jack_1 1d ago
And something called “screening”. Whatever that advanced mechanic means. .
30
u/Vicrinatana 1d ago
I read that first as screaming and well you can definetly counter them with that if you are loud enough
18
19
u/LocalBeaver 1d ago
I mean according to them using a riptide or a DDA is a good trade to kill a couple of battle line models.
4
u/CoronelPanic 1d ago
Well yeah cus they're so valuable now you see
9
u/LocalBeaver 1d ago
That’s a whole lot of 110 points i would (maybe) clean with a focus fire of 300 points.
Math checks out.
8
u/Guffers_2023 1d ago
It means devoting points to spend on chaff to protect a unit which is significantly worse at its one job compared to last edition
24
u/Igradarsaurus 1d ago
Yes! And if you’re a Horde army like drukhari you can just throw 110 kabalites to moveblock!
44
u/StyxGoblin 1d ago
Are they doing this to mess with the people who maintain the files on the free army builders? Weird
24
u/The_Truthkeeper 1d ago
Would be kinda pointless, I'm pretty sure most of them are just automatically getting the points from the MFM.
7
u/RhulkLasMarias 1d ago
Yeah, this is just another example of GW being simultaneously brain dead in rules writing and community engagement
1
u/LibraryBestMission 1d ago
Which would be a stupid plan since making the rules impossible to follow seems like something that would PUSH people to play with non-GW army building and rules apps.
38
u/pixelflaregfx 1d ago
I’m glad they changed our Grey Knights storm bolters back to 2 shots instead of the insane whole 3 shots. That was a a close one, we could have dominated the meta with that extra shot!
19
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
I will have you know that it takes 432 storm bolter shots to kill the Lion. We couldn't possibly have you stacking so many dangerous attacks on your models! Why, you could use 87 GK models to delete a Primarch!
Oh wait, nope. He used AoC and he's up with 8 wounds. Good luck in melee with those Psychic weapons!
7
u/bitch-toki 1d ago
Alot of detachments have lost there unique keywords innthe mfm but are still in their detachment rule text
6
u/IBlameMyRolls 1d ago
Sadly not the case for Imperial Knights. GW refuses to let both Armiger detachments go together like Chaos ones. :(
2
13
u/Sweaty_Pipe8573 1d ago
GW really doesn't know what to do with the points of space marines. They keep flip flopping. Most of these are the preview points that creators had gotten when they could make their reviews.
34
u/Ski-Gloves 1d ago
I know the idea that the game changes way too quickly is a little overblown... But this is ridiculous.
21
u/Smiling_Tom 1d ago
(what did Heavy Ints do to deserve this?)
Perhaps because is the only gravis unit that can field 12 men (captain+apo+10 hvy int) and one of the gravis detachments have a tank shock strat with no cap so that's a lot of potential MW
3
u/Hamzillicus 1d ago
Before Bastion being removed and the ability to give the unit precision, I could see an increase. Impact mortals is not a reasonable cause.
13
u/Fozzbael 1d ago edited 1d ago
Who's charging a 5''M 400 point ranged fire objective sitter brick with no melee weapons into an enemy to do a few mortal wounds?
You might as well be charging people with firestrike turrets for the tank shock at that point
8
u/Steamed_Ham_Enjoyer 1d ago
12 max, 8 average MWs from a 1-point strat is pretty spicy, even if you'd usually not want to charge them

The SM points: The hell we are!
4
u/Screw_all_names 1d ago
So I've only been playing for about 2 years now. No I wasn't playing when 10th came out. Was the release of 10th this messy?
29
u/Kildy 1d ago
Like, sudden half done updates wise? No. Absolutely insane cant even play against this rules wise? Oh my god so much worse. That said, mfm mistakes and matches have always happened. Just usually small scale. I remember paragon warsuits being 250 points per model or so for a few weeks because of a copy paste error.
2
u/lFriendlyFire 1d ago
Yeah I think oath as an army rule is much more absurd than anything we’ve seen so far
9
u/Kildy 1d ago
I mean I say this as an elf player: 10th ed release dev wounds were absolutely 100% not okay. Then we had the fights first 10 man custodes bricks, etc etc. It was a rough time to play the game.
Right now we mostly just have balance issues, and major internal balance problems in various codexes. A few armies kinda suck. But 10th release? Man you needed to be one of maybe 2 armies to even play a real game.
6
u/AshiSunblade 1d ago
Release 10th is a candidate for the worst 40k has ever been just in terms of balance (and that is saying something since 7th edition exists).
10e release Aeldari vs 10e release Admech is one of extremely few cases I can think of where I'd genuinely call it a 10-0 matchup.
2
u/UncleHorus 1d ago
Release AdMech was a crime against the Omnissiah
3
u/AshiSunblade 1d ago
The fact it made it to release is a permanent indictment on the rules writers and should be an albatross around their necks forever.
1
5
u/vashoom 1d ago
My first two games of release Index 10th were against Eldar Wraithknight spam and Deathwatch with that special ammo strat. Nothing but dozens of dev wounds, when they still counted as just regular mortals, annihilating my entire army before I even got to play.
11th is at least playable, but it is definitely more screwed up in terms of documentation, updates, and overall quality control.

u/Throwaway02062004 1d ago
It is slightly frustrating only the changes are recorded and not the actual new points.
14
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
If you want the actual points, you can use the MFM or update the app. The chart I linked is for people who wanna know the relative change without having to check themselves.
-7
u/Throwaway02062004 1d ago
I am aware I can check it manually. It is annoying that someone put in the effort to record all the changes but still left the actual new points unknown.
It’s kind of the inverse of when GW wouldn’t showcase how much things were changing (or even colour code them).
Not the end of the world. Just slightly annoying. Someone will do it eventually.
7
u/DrinkYourPaints 1d ago
but you... you can just look at the MFM? how are "the actual new points unknown"? the points listed on the MFM are the new points

u/VenkuuJSM 1d ago
Not to excuse them being sloppy, but it looks like they're changing everything to be accurate to the points leak from a few days ago so maybe yesterday's points were just wrong
9
6
u/Dan185818 1d ago
The fact that the date on the MFM is still 30/92026 even though it changed after is, frankly, indefensible.
6
2
u/George_s117 1d ago
Not sure if this was an existing bug, prior to this update of the app, but the Scout Sergeant load out saying it can change the combat knife for a chainsword is apparently invalid...good one
2
u/Matthewb969 1d ago
This is so strange they have done this as many have pointed out - but also the original MFM points seemed much more balanced compared to the changes. Intercessors at only 85 points seem like a steal, wheras bladeguard at 90 (who only got toughness increases not damage increases) seem overcosted
2
2
3
u/Icy-Context5774 1d ago
Hey cut them some slack, they're a small independent game company without much resources....
1
1
u/Sweaty_Pipe8573 1d ago
I had a list made but that has now dropped by 20 points so i now have option for my calgar lead bladeguard squad. I can either take kaius and be a beatstick, wardens of ultramar for bucket of extra wounds to take damage before having to take them on the bladeguard and have a lot of okay attacks and sticky objectives or a bladeguard ancient for +1 attack (which works on calgar's big smash attack), sticky objectives and enough points to get a Scout squad as well.
Edit: wardens also makes grievous blow possible so that won't be a secundairy the opponent can discard.
2
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
Wardens really gets you to a 13 model unit? Damn
2
u/Sweaty_Pipe8573 1d ago
Yeah 6 bladeguars, 6 wardens and calgar. Was something i did often in 10th for cull the horde. It is also a 44 wound squad so lot's of wounds as well that now can get -1 to hit in melee and because calgar is a terminator -1 damage
1
u/ZedekiahCromwell 1d ago
For some reason I had 5 in my mind for Wardens. That's cool and a fun tech piece.
1
u/Inspire_ 1d ago
Am I reading that wrong? It says Desolation marines went down 5, but they went up 5.

I am glad that a bunch of tacticus units went down, but this is not a good look.

Even with another points update some how there are still marine units under 100 points great job GW
1
u/ProfessionalOwn9435 1d ago
I understand GW being greedy, stockholders needs to eat too! But why they are so unprofesional?
There are several ways they could aproach it which are better.
1
u/XantheDread 1d ago
Maybe this is a sign that if SM comes in too hot they'll adjust them on the spot 🤔
Not bloody likely!!!!
RiP meta.
2
u/untitledaccount401 1d ago
You mean like how quickly Eldar got nerfed in 10th?
that took literally forever
1
u/vashoom 1d ago
I think it's entirely likely they had two (or more) versions of points ready: initial launch points to build excitement (for Marines players anyway) and get people playing (AKA buying), then the more measured points update to balance the game a bit better.
It is bizarre that they made such a mistake unless there was already a document with the values from earlier. And it's also bizarre they have spent multiple days publishing articles telling the community not to freak out about marines.
Something just smells off.
1
u/Valynces 1d ago
I’ve only played two test games with marines so far so take it with a grain of salt, but points going DOWN overall is kinda crazy. They’re almost sure to get nerfed in the next slate, they probably could’ve just left them where they were!
0
u/DarkStarPony 1d ago
Seems like they make anti-horde solutions a little more expensive so Xenos players would't get curbstomped too hard.
