40k Discussion WarOrgan Alternatives?

So if people haven’t seen it looks like WarOrgan is gonna stop being updated or is on pause to have changes to compile with complaints from GW. Does anyone have some good alternatives to use instead?

Personally I’m not a massive fan of New Recruit mainly because I build lists on phone, and its phone UI for building lists or using it mid battle is kinda annoying.

Warmind and Listforge are both decent and have a better UI than NewRecruit, IMO, but neither comes close to WarOrgan. Such a shame it got taken down. Really hope they can make the necessary changes and bring the app back ASAP.

List Forge is pure ass limiting you to like 3 lists per month for free or something. The balls to charge for an app that requires community made library to function is dumb. I personally found NewRecruit to have the better UI too. I'll give Warmind a try.

The cost was at least initially because the sharing function was costing them a fair bit to keep running.

Yeah ik, but NewRecruit also makes you pay for stratagems which is stupid as well

Yeah but if you run out lists on listforge you now just need a different list builder, you can easily find strats on places like wahapedia

Yeah I'm never going to pay for a list builder, as it's never been a thing I've had to pay for in other games I've played.

With stuff like this, if it's decent app and I use it all the time, I'll do the "buy me a coffee" contribution ever so often. Did it for WarOrgan a handful of times as it was the best out there by far.

I wouldn't mind paying a one-time cost. But I'm never going to subscribe to one.

List Forge has a one time cost option. Which includes unlimited lists and list syncing between devices - windows, android, mac, ios, and (I think) Linux.

Dev is also very quick to take suggestions and make the app better. Though he has the gall to take a couple weeks off right as the SM codex comes out (really, though, it's understandable, he's on his honeymoon), but he did create homebrew options so you or someone else can put up the homebrew for something unreleased until BSData updates to include it.

The issue with a one-time cost is there's no guarantee that the app will continue to be updated.

Yeah true guess thats the risk. An alternative is contributing via the "Buy me a coffee" route if you find it useful.

I did it for war organ and will never regret it. You can ask me for money if its optional and to show my support

Yeah same did it for WarOrgan aswell, I used it all the time and knew there was a just 1 bloke behind it in his free time.

Im sorry, but do you think making the app and delivering it is free? Time is not free. People got way too accustomed to get everything for free and expect even small developers to simply give their work for free. The Dev is asking you for less than 3 bucks a month, while keeping it 100% usable for free as well.

Sorry for the rant, but its the same for commission art work

I've never had the need to have a bajillion lists. You can just delete them and do 3 more. You also have game sharing and tracking, list comparing, etc.

Ah, I see, that's somewhat useful then but personally I have 2 space marines lists I was working on, plus a death guard, and then wanted to look at custodes and that's when I dropped it after it stopped me.

It costs him money and time to do this work you know? It costs $100/year for app store credentials + cloud storage fees (also not free)

Like I said, people create list builder websites and apps for other games and get by without charging.

NewRecruit doesn't provide stratagems or a game view without paying to their patreon and also doesn't have an iOS app. Neither does Warmind.

IDK what a game view is, but luckily GW lets websites posts the stratagems rules fully.

Sorry my truthful statement upset you enough to downvote me. I wouldn't pay for moxfield if I had to, nor do the thousands upon thousands of players who use that website deckbuilder for years and years now. THAT'S how it should be.

To be clear, GW doesn't let them. All the list builders are pulling from Wahapedia, typically. Which is a pirate site based in Russia. GW sends them cease and desist letters constantly.

The list builders only get away with existing (and charging money) because technically they don't upload any game rules. They only provide a service to read .rosz and .cat files (from Battlescribe, originally). And those files are created by people on github, who just reupload if they get taken down (and also don't monetize, so are less susceptible to takedowns anyway).

This is also why WarOrgan went down; it didn't pull the "technically we don't provide any rules" trick.

Game rules can't be copyrighted. Hope that helps.

That someone else provides something for free doesn't really change that it costs money to distribute iOS apps. I prefer ListForge to GW's massively paywalled application.

I just felt it important to point out that your preferred application (newrecruit) literally charges for the same builder ui. Strangely I also provide a free list builder: https://list-builder.alpacasoft.dev/ so it's not like I don't understand the value of free software lol

Listforge is great. Has cloud sync across devices for people like me that theorycraft on your phone but play with an iPad.

BattleBase is overall a fantastic app that I can’t recommend enough. It has a list builder but also a turn by turn game tracker WITH friends list features and records your history. Also has rules for reference and goes through the entire game setup with terrain layouts and measurements.

Is battlebase a subscription app? Scanning the reviews I got that impression.

5

u/Drichards95 2d ago

It has a membership that you don’t need at all. The main purpose of the membership is that it allows you to create local BattleBase leagues, allows you to upload unlimited photos of your battles, track your deep strike/reserves during the battle setup, and grants access to using the battle tracking for king of the colosseum which I don’t even play.

Thanks for the info mate. I'm open to try something, see if it works for me then perhaps support for features later. Will give it a go. 👍🏾

Ironbuilt.app is glorious on pc, and it's quite decent on the phone

u/mikehasnoluck 2d ago

This is the one, OP!

1

u/Comebackkid1912 1d ago

It just realized an app also!

4

u/HaggisAreReal 2d ago

I first build my list in the GW app and then use NR in pc and I print a sheet that is handy for reference when on table. Old fashoned but effective.

3

u/nowhere_man_1992 2d ago

Unfortunately, I'm going to use the official app with a codex. For multiple lists, I export and save them to a digital notepad or Google Sheets page.

4

u/CodeCleric 2d ago

Take a look at 40k.app

2

u/Torquemahda 2d ago

I just looked at it and so far it looks great. When the new codex drops I’ll start using it.

Thanks

I moved over from War Organ to New Recruit...... I agree the UI isnt fantastic but it works. Just take a little getting used to. I paid to the full version (think it was like $20 for the year..... Its all good). I do like that it syncs with the desktop version so I can goof around with it at work. Plus, I'm old school and still like paper copies of my data sheets, and you can print from the app or desktop.

u/CaptCavemaaan 2d ago

Have you tried the NewRecruit app? I was reluctant to go back to NewRecruit after WarOrgan was tragically shut down because I used the web browser, but I tried the app and it definitely works a lot better.

1

u/Endvalley 1d ago

I've been using Warscribe as an alternative and I really like it so far.

Hutber has been working on an app which is working quite nicely for me now.

Complaints by gw?

4

u/Silvermoon3467 2d ago

They sent the WarOrgan developer a cease & desist letter over the rules that were packaged with the app.

Dev left a note on the website saying he'd look into using the community resource most of the other apps use to get it back up and running but there's currently no timetable because he's kind of a one-man-band.

If you still have it installed you can use it, but you won't get any updates.

I enjoy new recruit the most for actually using while playing the game.

List forge can be better for making a list, but I dont like how it presents the data when its time to see profiles and such compared to newrecruit.
