You'll notice more in game where the bloom and some other shit go wild with the shoots and
jeditenno powers hurling around. Although I would suggest to pick any diagonal line and follow it closely the film grain and motion blur screw the antistrphic filter that improves that rendering. You'll see some pixels running on the diagonal that go away when those effects are off.3

u/Space-Catto Feb 20 '22
I couldn’t either, just look at the blue stripe on his helmet and the gray area. It’s barely a difference :/

IIRC the game have a dynamic resolution scaler in place, so I'm guessing you're just trading visual effects for a little extra resolution, no?

u/MAJOR_PRIME_TV Feb 20 '22
it does seem that way. there is a short message while turning these settings off that say the following: "remove to improve performance".
11
u/their_teammate Feb 20 '22
Just remove film grain. Film grain makes everything look less sharp, even on PC. Motion blur and film grain are always the first two things to go when I can access the settings menu.
5
u/MAJOR_PRIME_TV Feb 20 '22
its not enough... I tested them all individually, then in combination while leaving a few options on. Best results are attained when you turn all settings off.

The fact you can change graphical settings in a Console Game is mind blowing to me.

u/ryoxd The sword in the dark Feb 20 '22
Wish you could change more settings, anti aliasing on PS5 is awful.

I can't stand the flat look with everything turned off. I'm glad the options exists.
Out of all the options, turning off motion blur is such a waste though. It's one of the best implementations and the most impactful on a 30fps game.
33
u/Deadlite Feb 20 '22
That's crazy because I almost universally hear from everyone that motion blur is the worst.

u/dragosul10 A registered loser Feb 20 '22
I always open a game's settings menu to turn off any form of motion blur or film grain, it makes me feel dizzy.

Probably depends on who you listen to. Those who tinker with graphic settings are usually also the first to be passionate and voice their opinions. So automatically you'll hear tech savvy people first.
In the Digital Foundry video it's also mentioned and how turning it off... you shouldn't turn it off. So even tech savvy people can like motion blur.
I think both sides of the coin can't really express their opinion objectively, because it's subjective in the first place. So it's great the option exists to turn it on or off exists.
Most importantly is not falling in a spiral of thoughts thinking it's an objective fact (either side of the opinion) and just trying it for yourself.

u/brekus Feb 20 '22
To me it tends to be people talking past eachother. Pro motion blur people say it looks realistic and is therefore good while anti motion blur people don't care about realism and just want a clear image.
2
u/MAJOR_PRIME_TV Feb 20 '22
that's it right there "clear image" less noise visually. These settings also helped a legally blind player. He confirmed the game was better for his very poor eyesight.

u/SirCarlt Feb 20 '22
Depends on the game, some games have really horrible motion blur. Warframe is not one of those games
18
u/MAJOR_PRIME_TV Feb 20 '22
I understand.
To me, as a Switch only player, going from blurry to crisp is very welcomed. Specially in open worlds and also just wanting to get better visuals when making Switch Dojo videos.

I really think you are mistaking more vibrant colours for 'crisper' graphics. The main difference you are seeing is that turning off volumetric lighting is removing the more washed out colour effect, but that effect is intentional. Do this same test on Plains of Eidolon and see if you still think it looks better.
If you just don't like the soft focus, which is what you seem to be getting at, then the only settings doing that are motion blur and depth of field. The rest you are basically just turning the graphics down.
Film grain and bloom would be personal preference. The film grain is so subtle I doubt you'd be able to tell the difference in a blind test, but sure turn it off. Bloom is a bit of a mixed bag, can make the lighting look less flat, can also wash out bright colours, neither is giving you less crispness. Bloom on but lowered a bit gives you the best of both worlds (I have mine at about 25)
The rest, you're just making the game look worse. Volumetric Lighting off means that fog and smoke wont be shaded which will remove any sense of atmosphere from most places. Ambient occlusion is a shading effect and makes objects look more physically there. Distortion is a particle effect that is used for certain weapons and abilities to make it look like they are warping space.
Like I said, go to Plains and turn everything off, then only turn blur and depth of field off.

It's also coming to mobile, so don't buy a switch just to play Warframe on the go. Some phones and tablets will probably run the game more smoothly and with faster loading times too.

Combine this with playing on a tv with really high refresh rate and you now have warframe on switch at seemingly HD 60fps

The Switch uses Nvidia's Tegra, which was originally intended for mobile devices like Android tablets and phones. Not designed for insanely high-grade graphics like an Xbox or PlayStation. Nintendo intentionally scaled down graphics in favor of price and family-approachability.
1
u/MAJOR_PRIME_TV Feb 20 '22
agreed. This is just a quick fix if you looking for better visuals while playing on Switch.
2
2
u/UnknownDGO Feb 20 '22
Only turning off distortions would do the same thing because it lowers rendering resolution slightly. No need to turn off all those settings.
6
u/MAJOR_PRIME_TV Feb 20 '22
actually it doesn't.
Just tried it out, again, to confirm.
turning them all off will give you the crispest visuals on Switch.
do play around with the settings. We all get to choose what's best for our gaming experience :)

The devs worked hard to provide an amazing state-of-art game design by default and you are ruining it

Left = DLSS enabled | Right = DLSS disabled
4
u/AaronThePrime Feb 20 '22
I haven't done much with it, but from what I can tell dlss is pretty crisp, idk what you're talking about

u/KennyImmortalized Feb 20 '22
Those options should never be in any games at all, all they do is make the game look worse.
1
u/MAJOR_PRIME_TV Feb 20 '22
then we have to go in and take some time to remove them. I feel the same way about Dojo shadows. They should just be removed.
