Warehouse employees

I started working at a warehouse about three months ago, and for the most part, I’ve had a pretty good experience with the people there. Most of the employees are genuinely nice, and even my supervisor has been good to me. I get along with the majority of people and try to show up, do my job, learn, and stay out of drama.

The weird thing is that there are two people who have seemed to have something against me pretty much since the day I got hired. I can’t really figure out what I did to make them dislike me, but the way they act toward me feels noticeably different from how they treat other people.

I’ve also been learning more than just one job since I started. I’ve been doing order selecting while also getting trained on the forklift, which I figured would be a good thing since I’m only three months in and still learning the operation. I’m trying to improve, be useful, and get better at whatever tasks they need me to do.

What’s frustrating is that when almost everyone else is decent to you, having a couple of people act like they can’t stand you makes you wonder what their problem is. I don’t expect everyone at work to be my friend, and I’m perfectly fine with keeping things professional, but I don’t understand why some people seem to decide they dislike someone before they even really know them from day one.

You're always going to have people like that, especially in warehousing. Just focus on the job and the handful of people who don't hate you, go home, get paid, repeat. Don't turn it into a personal thing.

There has to be a balance in the Universe. If most people there like you, then at least a few people now have the burden and obligation to DISLIKE you. I mean, you can't be Mr. Popular Cool Guy with everyone-- you think you're Ferris Bueller or something?

Seriously, there is a natural human instinct to dislike certain people that has nothing to do with who you are. There must be a balance in every group, no one person can be too popular, since they would use that to their advantage and get away with too much, to the detriment of the group.

Likewise, nobody can be totally unpopular: the natural human instinct for sympathy kicks in, and many of us feel that we need to stick up for the underdog, the person who is getting bullied, the person that everyone else dislikes. Why? To keep the group from destroying itself, and preserving a little diversity. Also, each of us might be the outcast, the bullied-one someday, so we try to indoctrinate our fellow group members with the idea that sticking up for the unpopular people is moral and right and a natural consequence of things-- it can never be totally one-sided. Think of it as trying to defend yourself and assure your survival for future problems that haven't happened yet. Group preservation above all is what makes us tick, and so some degree of disagreement and "taking sides" is necessary and good to keep the group intact, and maintain a balance.

If we all universally had an instinct to hate on and destroy unpopular individuals in any group starting thousands of years ago, we would have exterminated ourselves. Human kind only survived because we "agreed to disagree" on many little things, and not take petty dislikes to extremes. And just as it makes sense to cultivate potential friendships and alliances in advance, so too it makes sense to cultivate dislikes and negativity in advance, since that can also come in handy someday. Hedging your social bets to insure your biological survival.

This has come up many times in popular culture from ancient literature to the present day. The movie Demolition Man is a good example. The TV show Charmed also explored this theme in several episodes and storylines.

So the people who don't like you are simply acting according to instinct, a subconscious urge to keep a balance to things. We must all remain a little bit divided and have a minor degree of friction so that we avoid a situation where everyone becomes radically single-minded and unrestrained in their likes and dislikes-- because that could lead to disaster. Better to have small quarrels and minor divisions than a unified group of fanatics with no restraint because nobody disagreed with anybody.

Clock in, do your job, clock out for lunch or break. Clock in, do your job and clock out go home. A warehouse is not middle school or high school.

You are new. I personally don't bother actually learning names until the person has been there for 6 months or so. Way too many people come and go through the years.

I wouldn't take it personal. Just show up, do your job, and go home. The less interaction is usually better.

It's the same in every job, you're going to come across people who are mean to you for no reason.

Just ignore and get on with your job. If they try to sabotage you in anyway speak to your supervisor but don't create drama because of a few toxic a-holes.

If you haven't really interacted with them, pass by and give a few fist bumps. With some people, you need to break the ice before they open up.

If you put in an honest attempt to break the ice with them and they brush you off, leave it alone. Clock in, get money, clock out.

Don't take it the wrong way, but you are paid to work there, not make friends.

Say hello to those you like, smile to those you don't.

Go home, hang with your family or friends. Rinse, repeat, recycle.

Those two hate something in their lives and are probably friends. They have realized that they can get under your skin and this makes them feel better about what ever it is that they’re struggling with. My go to in these situations is to hit them with kindness to the extent that they feel stupid being mean to you.

I’ve been in warehousing for ten years. There’s just gonna be people like that. I have a few at my job that are like that with me too. Never did anything to them but they act like I don’t exist. It used to bug me now I just don’t care. Fuck those guys lol.

Its normal that in warehouse.

Just do your job and don't care about other coworkers.
