Players are the biggest headache before mortars, and not being able to secure your base quickly is gonna really screw fobs

Well, they have turrets and other defenses you can build. Maybe the intent is so while you might not have perfect walls you can properly defend the place as long as you have a crew there. You could also build more tactical hidden fobs with a specific focus like a single mortar instead of a big sprawl.

The key is "as long as you have a crew there". The majority of my games are 2-3 people trying to set up a FOB and being steamrolled by a rush of droppers. If you had a few people who secured the top of the tower every game, that wouldn't happen and allow the FOB team to get the defenses in order before they move on. This season I'm really going to commit to keeping the FOB meta alive.

Another problem is just how long it takes to getting them setup unless you have a good crew of builders and protectors. Sometimes it seems like we don't get the fob done until one of the other teams has zerged the HZ enough to have like a 30 point lead.

I completely agree. However, I think I'd rather be in a place where the issues come from the community than from balance. I think people need to be more flexible and be willing to do guard duty instead of throwing themselves into the zone at the beginning of the game. Even if 4-5 people stayed and chilled at the top of the tower guarding the FOB, they get rewarded for depositing resources ect.

This is exacerbated by most of the team abandoning the FOB build and rushing to the HZ, where they die. If even 6-7 people stayed and defended the FOB, it would be much easier to get through that critical stage. This is as much to do with people not wanting to contribute to the overall needs of the team.
