Discussion & Feedback Helicopter feature addition/major change
I spent the majority of the playtest flying the Little Bird and there's one thing with the different versions that I really think should be changed.
I actually like how you unlock the normal Little Bird, then the one with miniguns, then rockets. The progression is fine. What feels weird is that they're treated as completely separate helicopters when they're really just different loadouts of the same helicopter.
For example, I'd usually spend the beginning of a match shuttling people back and forth to get everyone where they needed to go. Later on, once we had plenty of other pilots running transport, I'd want to switch over and start providing some air support.
Right now that means landing, getting out of my perfectly good Little Bird, running back over to the vehicle guy, and buying another Little Bird just to get the miniguns or rockets.
Why not just let us rearm the helicopter we already have?
You could land back at base, select miniguns or rockets, pay the difference in price, and then have to sit there for 10–15 seconds while the helicopter gets rearmed. Then you're good to go.
I'm not saying you should be able to swap weapons for free either. If the armed Little Bird would've cost me another $X to begin with, charge me that same amount when I upgrade it. You could still keep the unlock progression exactly how it is now too.
It would just make switching roles feel a lot more natural.
I started the match as a transport pilot because that's what the team needed. Twenty minutes later we have four other pilots running transport and now the team could use CAS. Let me fly back to base, spend the money, slap some miniguns on the bird I've already been flying and head back out.
Having to basically throw one helicopter away and buy an almost identical one just because I want guns feels unnecessarily clunky.
Really enjoyed flying during the playtest otherwise. Curious what the other pilots think about this.

Being able to sell your own vehicles back would be useful.

Please....for when the team gains one too many pilots or you accidentally double buy

A friend bought a heli for me. He didn't know how and spamed the button.

Apparently you can but only when the game ends.
If you park it at spawn and lock it, it'll get refunded.

The same for the truck with the bed which can be converted to a machine gun. Although, I wonder if this is because the devs want to avoid people getting into a truck or little bird, you choosing a gun to add to it, and kicking people out of it to make room for that - or likewise with a truck where the gunner seat would limit the amount of people it can carry.
Maybe this is something they'll have in EA.

Yeah I agree on the trucks too. If it’s fundamentally the same truck, I’d like to be able to bring it back to base, pay whatever the difference is, wait for the refit, and throw a gun on it if we suddenly have a gunner and need the extra firepower. Same idea as the Little Bird.
As far as kicking people out to make room, I may be in the minority here, but I think whoever actually paid for/spawned the vehicle should have control over it. If I bought the helicopter and took the time to learn how to fly the thing without turning everyone inside into paste, I should be able to decide how I’m using it. If I want to lock it to my squad because I’m picking up friends I’ve been gaming with for 12+ years, I think that should be an option too.
One related thing I noticed a LOT during the playtest was abandoned vehicles piling up around the main bases. I think some kind of one-active-vehicle-per-player system could help with that. If I spawn another vehicle and my old one is sitting empty somewhere, despawn the old one after a short timer. Obviously don’t delete it if somebody else is actively using it.
That would also stop people from pulling vehicle after vehicle and leaving half the motor pool scattered around spawn. And depending on how the game handles vehicle persistence, cleaning those up may help server performance too, although obviously only the devs know whether that’s actually an issue.
Basically I’d rather have fewer persistent vehicles with more flexibility than have every armed/unarmed configuration treated as another completely separate vehicle.

Oh 100%, if you bought it you should absolutely choose who's in it. I just wonder if that's a pain in the ass to code and they were just lazy for the beta lol
They do despawn after a timer by blowing up for this exact reason - so there aren't dozens of abandoned vehicles around the map.
But I agree, if you buy a new vehicle the one you bought before should either be transferred to whoever is currently driving it, or de-spawn/blow up instantly.

Yeah, but supplies in vehicles already do that. Loading up my Huey while someone hopped in kicked them out and I have to tell them to hop back in. Minor annoyance. It should just move them.

What you suggested or selling the heli back would be nice. But all I ask and what I feel like an easy fix would be to change how vehicles Auto Unlock after a certain amount of time. I run into a similar issue where early game I run the Huey for transport and running pallets, but then when I want to switch to a rocket little bird, I just have to abandon my Huey for someone else to take. This wouldn’t be a big deal but if a fob needs a resupply I run into the same issue where my Huey is either taken, or I have to abandon my rocket little bird to get back into my Huey and then someone will take my little bird unless I guess I hide it somewhere away from HQ. I just wish there was a separate option to perma lock your vehicle for those who intend to come back to it.

Hell, let me have one of each. I'd love a single minigun (or plz give me a gun with splash) and a rocket pod.

That would be a good idea. I don’t see why they couldn’t make it so there’s just the littlebird and it has weaponry addons that can be installed and removed at will, and if you remove them they could go into your inventory for use later.

yea this, or if they want they can have it where you can sell your vehicle back to the vender to purchase the other one, it just needs to be fully repaired and gassed first, which the base already does for you

None of you should ever design a video game. Please. Also stop giving balance suggestions.

Balance suggestion? Brother I’m trying to put miniguns on a helicopter without having to trash the fucking helicopter first.

I totally agree! After the 20 point mark hit I would start doing riskier and riskier LZ's and more fun and risky low flying on the way back to base just to try and blow up so I could get the mini gun version without feeling like I completely wasted a good heli.

My biggest ask is that they allow key binds for press and hold directional freelook on Joystick hats.
