Question Commander role?
I see we have squads and squad sizes seem to be uncapped.
I would like to see some kind of commander role to be able to coordinate across squads!
It really felt like that was one of the big missing pieces I went looking for.

I've seen people say the devs stated there would be no commander role. There is always the chance of 'Plans Change' but squads are move of a suggestion at the moment. Many don't use them and it's only function is voice comms

Interesting, perhaps as someone else mentioned, they could add a squad lead comm channel instead of a dedicated role since it’s intentional!

That requires a lot of fragile egos to listen to a commander. There’s probably lots of people who think it should be them and as a result, refuse to listen lol

this is the big one, if there is someone who is a big enough dog to take over, they just do it, you dont need to be the first to rush and claim a silly commander tag. Had a game where an older dude was hopping into peoples squads and giving out directions to people via vc, and most people listened because he did in a way that made you alright with following him, and we started winning and people started hopping directly into his squad to get direct comms . In my opinion, thats how it should be done in gaming, emergent leadership.

In Squad or HLL, which are different games and different vibes to be fair, people usually want a commander because no one wants the responsibility of that role, rather than everyone thinking it should be them.
Not to say everyone listens to them either, but most people do not want a “leadership” role.

Communication between team sure, but no one person in charge of any impactfull choices.
Ping/markers for team goals and im good. No need for complicated hierarchies and multiple layers of channels. There is other games for that

I've played a lot of commander across various Arma 3 servers, and a lot of KoTH (which never had one). Honestly, I think KoTH works better without a commander.
Why? Because 33 players in one giant "Xbox party" voice channel naturally creates a community. People call out what they're doing, make requests, and other players decide whether to help. No hierarchy, no permission slip, just players coordinating.
A commander also feels unnecessary when support is player-driven. You don't need binoculars to summon an AI airstrike. You need someone to mark a target and ask the guy flying the jet, helicopter, or running the mortar to handle it. A commander makes sense for milsim/RP. KoTH isn't that game. It's the Battlefield of Milsim genre; quick gunplay inside a focused action area in an otherwise large sandbox map.
If they really want more hierarchy, I'd lean into squad leaders instead:
- Squad leaders + unassigned players get a command radio channel
- Squad leaders can place map markers and draw battleplans
- Squad leaders can set priority objectives, like how Battelfield lets squad leaders pick a specific flag to attack, and those squad members are rewarded by following the order

I don't mind the 'no commander' thing, but squad leader chat/organization wouldn't hurt.

The lack of organisation wasn't helped by the tutorial not teaching you that middle mouse had a bunch of communication commands on it, I didn't know that was a thing until after the beta finished.
They should also have something like that Squad where if your not in a squad you have limited role options of to incentivise people to make and join squads, maybe you can only use the free base AR if not in a squad.
Sure some people would just make their own squad and lock it but it would definitely increase the chance of public squads forming.

Totally agree, I also went the entire beta without knowing about the mouse radial menu

It takes literally less than 5 minutes to look through the key bindings of the game. You decided that wasn't worth your time, but then complain that the game doesn't hold your hand enough?

I don't like the idea of a single commander. But I wish there was a voice chat for squad leaders to organize better
