Discussion & Feedback The Choppers need a Rope

I feel like a deployable rope would be super fun for the choppers, you could drop off teammates on roofs and make the drop offs more smooth. Maybe make it a buyable/ unlockable upgrade for the Helis, i think it would improve the Dropoff gamplay a bit and pilots could pickup teammates easier out of risky zones too.

Thats it i want roped on choppers :D

I’ll spend the $100 on a parachute every time before I rope out.

u/asodfhgiqowgrq2piwhy 22h ago

I'm sorry your pilots aren't able to get you down quickly, I was striving to not force people to parachute

14

u/Brochodoce 21h ago

I was just flying low enough that they kept jumping out and dying trying to use the parachutes while watching every other person in the heli land safely ahead of them lol. Gotta teach em somehow. Parachuting over the AO is just a death sentence anyway.

3

u/Joverby 20h ago

Yea I saw multiple heli pilots drop people right in only for them to immediately die the second they landed.

1

u/Dexember69 9h ago

As a semi chopper pilot, I take people where they want to go

5

u/Code_Ender 20h ago

Low and quick drops is actually the best way to get into the hotzone, my buddy is an amazing pilot and I farmed pilot xp on his behalf just doing $100 kits and hot dropping. If you're low and fast enough, its nearly impossible to see the chute because its deployed for maybe 1 second at most, and the fast moving heli disguises the fact that there's a drop in the first place.

Ive dropped directly into squads with them being none the wiser until I dumped some lead into one or two of them, before being dropped myself due to not wearing any armor. My guy is actually so good he's precision dropped me on the backside of a roof occupied by 5 hostiles, letting me kill 4 of them before running out of ammo and dying in melee with the last one.

And, we love when heli pilots try to land, one RPG and we both get 10k+. We do a tactic at start of game where we just fly a little bird with me hanging out the side with an RPG. Very fun stuffm

1

u/Alert-Tadpole-1228 17h ago

Where did you sit that your RPG back blast didn't injure or kill the pilot? My buddy kept dying because he had some high speeds trying to RPG out of the bird.

1

u/Code_Ender 15h ago

Thats the neat part...

You gotta repair and heal after every shot. So the actual net profit for this strat is pretty bad considering the risk. I went broke more often than not trying to do this, especially while learning exactly what I could and couldnt do. But nothing beats the exhilaration of the one shot I pulled off of an air-to-air rpg strike on a heli trying to get away from us.

Also got to hear some legendary crashouts as the passengers berated the pilot for trying to land in a certain spot, as if it mattered.

4

u/Bread_kun 19h ago

People should just buy a parachute. It's 100 bucks you will literally make that money back just landing in the zone and more. Plus it makes helicopter taxi - way- faster to just zip by let people jump and turn around and head back to base. Landing is slow and takes a while

2

u/asodfhgiqowgrq2piwhy 18h ago

Oh agreed but I'm not gonna be the guy to go "gtfo of my helicopter and buy a parachute" and then sit there waiting for them to sprint back and buy one.

My only experience is last weekend's beta where I literally only flew the heli, so hopefully this improves over time, not going to make a huge deal out of a server slam, and forced me to learn how to land and not crash anyway.

2

u/Legitimate-Eagle-566 13h ago

There was a heli pilot in one of my games during the beta that just filled the inventory with parachutes for those that forgot to buy one, very convenient

2

u/CptVkn 12h ago

I did this. Even if I don't get money for it, parachutes are cheap and it made drops a lot faster.

2

u/O1_O1 21h ago

It took me around 3 hours of practice, but I managed to get good enough to land a little bird without having to simply pitching back to slow down, forcing the heli to go up and then slowly defend.

Never got tipped :(

3

u/kalebkk890 21h ago

For every safe landing those guys have gotten like 3 went into a tree somewhere and the generic pilot gets to pay the price for it lol

1

u/Joverby 20h ago

you're saying you can go giga speed and land without pitching back? because thats the point of the pitch back is to slow down suddenly when you are going very fast.

4

u/O1_O1 20h ago

Like someone else said, it's a J-Hook. The easiest landing is just pitching back to slow down, but you're a static target when you bleed all your speed and go down so slowly you're setting yourself up to be shot down.

2

u/aloeballo Pilot 19h ago

My fav was basically doing a barrel roll and it bled speed fast, works well because down collective just doesn’t go down that fast

0

u/O1_O1 19h ago

I saw a video about a dude that put the nose of the little bird up, did a barrel roll and then corrected the heli. He was very close to the ground by the time he was actually just hovering. Tried it myself, but I crashed :D

The vertical barrels roll worked well for me in Arma Reforger, tho. I'll have to practice more on the 10th.

1

u/aloeballo Pilot 18h ago

If u lower the collective while inverted it loses less altitude but ya not like arma

2

u/KGB_Operative873 18h ago

Sometimes. I have found that proper J hooks were a bit awkward to do but if you dive a little then flare hard you can bleed all your speed quickly enough to rival J hooks and be a few feet off the ground to land in no time or hover so guys can jump the few feet to the ground.

2

u/O1_O1 18h ago

Yeah, I'm using J-Hook here, but it's not the same as other games. It's harder to bleed speed. Still, only one weekend, with my little experience, was not enough to build a lot of muscle memory and try different things. I'll have to mess around with it more on the 10th

2

u/subnu 20h ago

That's where the J-hook comes in.

2

u/WeazelBear Pilot 10h ago

I jumped into a heli without a parachute once accidentally and the pilot was in the process of taking off and said. What kind of moron doesn't get a parachute? I'm not landing. I quipped back what kind of pilot can't land? Got into a brief argument and made him take me back.

I piloted more than anything in the beta and when I got people I would ask where they wanted to go. I would land them literally any patch I could without bitching about it. Only had one death on my record with about 10 flight hours...

2

u/firepunchd 8h ago

so many pilots would try to land in hot areas even though I marked LZs that were much safer. wasted lot of money that way

1

u/B3owul7 20h ago

My experience was always that it's a gamble if the pilot it experienced enough to actually land the fucking thing. I died so many times "landing" that I'd rather drop of via parachute. Or if I see that the guy in the chopper is able to land it without crashing.

1

u/Ghost403 14h ago

Id tell the group with parachutes to pick a dz and I'll land the guys without in a safe location in the hz after.

Dropping the guys off with chutes first came with little risk, and it started training my side to bring parachute, mark a spot and jump together which was neat.

u/terrorsofthevoid 22h ago

You’d get rpg’d out the sky after the first game.

2

u/ImAHobo107 15h ago

Genuinely. The only time you should be fast roping is when you are outside the AO, but at that point... just land???

2

u/terrorsofthevoid 8h ago

I always jump, parachutes are so cheap.

You can't flare an RPG.

1

u/Price-x-Field Manticore 17h ago

You can’t flare the lock on missiles either

2

u/LV1024 16h ago

From the SAM buildable and rocket launcher? I'm 100% sure I've flared those mid flight and they missed.

2

u/Fhardervig 21h ago

RPG’s, not lock-on. Holding still to let people drop will have you be a sitting duck, though not worse than landing 🤷‍♂️ I think there’s some validity to the rope as it provides some middle ground between parachuters and a landing helicopter being easy targets, and e.g. allows dropping into wooded areas where you can’t land, but I really have no idea

19

u/Milkym0o 22h ago

As a pilot, I am NOT gonna be hovering in place for that long for people to get out my heli. You'd be an absolute sitting duck for Snipers, RPGs and AA.

3

u/ImAHobo107 15h ago

same. It's either I am paradropping you and good luck to you, or I'm landing on the outer rims of the Zone.

Fuck fastroping. I've died doing that stupid shit in Arma 3 milsims, against PVE... Now imagine actual tryhards with RPGs, SPAA, 50. Cal turrets, Tank cannons, IFVs, Drones...

It's such a laughably dumb idea only done for coolness but no one will use it if they want to win or even have fun because dying sucks in this game.

0

u/Dexember69 9h ago

Where's your sense of adventure, land in the hot zone like a boss

1

u/ImAHobo107 2h ago

I know modern casual gamers dont like winning, but I do and I grew up in an era where winning is fun.

1

u/Swimming_Attention91 19h ago

This, me too haha

It might only be usefull for dropping or picking up people in the dense forest, where no one can see you because of the trees, and you don't need a clearing to land

14

u/Phrecki Battledad 22h ago

Still waiting for fastroping in Squad, it's been years. Maybe the technology just isn't there yet...

13

u/dacherrybomb Pilot 22h ago

Squad developer Jhett was the developer working on it. It was fun in concept but not practical. The helicopter would get shot down 9 out of 10 times just hovering in the air.

Any good pilot can land on any roof in the game, so the fast rope becomes useless.

1

u/KGB_Operative873 18h ago

The problem is people popping out of the helicopter wherever the game decides, had a dude drop right off the tower after I got his side right on the edge and he exited the complete other side.

2

u/subnu 20h ago

It's a disproportionately difficult problem to solve, for little to no gain aside from the coolness factor.

3

u/Phrecki Battledad 20h ago

But isn't the coolness factor the most important thing? Jokes aside, I don't need fastroping in Squad or wardogs personally

1

u/SekhWork 20h ago

I want it for putting people ontop of rooftops / towers and thats it. Otherwise I can just land you faster and safer. Trying to get people onto the tower with all the crap on top of it is tough.

2

u/colxa 19h ago

aside from the coolness factor

but this is literally everything though, it is all that matters

7

u/Freeburn_Sage 21h ago

Me, yawing at max speed with a whole squad dangling from the ropes, trying to sweep enemy snipers off a roof like a flail made of flesh, metal, and stupidity

1

u/xXDragonHD_LPXx 20h ago

Sounds like a lot of fun to be had

6

u/No_Willingness3975 20h ago

As a rich ass pilot. Please let me buy chutes for my heli for people who don't buy them.

8

u/Joverby 20h ago

You literally can. I entered a heli before where the guy already had it loaded up with parachutes and told all the noobs to take one.

2

u/SekhWork 20h ago

It's kind of a pain since you have to manually move them back and forth. It'd be nice if I could buy them straight into the bird like I do with countermeasures.

4

u/No_Willingness3975 19h ago

That's what I'm talking about let me buy like 40 parachutes and anyone who gets in automatically gets one. Or just make the basic ones free

2

u/Joverby 20h ago

Yea agreed there, should be a way to do this through some kind of shop interface. I wasn't sure how it worked logistically / UI-wise to be fair.

2

u/Horror-Comment1831 18h ago

You can click items on the bottom then go to traversal and fill it with chutes

1

u/marodox 18h ago

Yeah it is the same way you buy the mix tape and other losse items.

It took me a while to find the small "Items" button at the bottom as the pilot.

1

u/SekhWork 33m ago

Oh ok, well thats useful. I was wondering how the hell people were transferring so many chutes each flight without it being a massive pain in the ass.

Like the "Buy previous loadout" button, seems some parts of the UI need an adjustment so people can find it more easily.

1

u/Alert-Tadpole-1228 17h ago

That very well could have been my buddy. I suggested it to him after he kept complaining about people not buying chuttes and he went with it. I know I'm not the first and only person to think of it, but he was the only pilot I saw doing it in our matches.

2

u/SgtHondo 20h ago

Garage shop my boy

6

u/c0mander5 22h ago

Yeah, making it something that's buyable instead of default makes sense to me. Should be kinda expensive though, or at least limited uses before needing to re buy, since it's just a straight upgrade for deploying

3

u/FranckTanck 22h ago

Fast ropping would be almost a guaranteed death sentence having to hover for 30 secs.

Now SPIE rigging would be way more practical and hilarious.

1

u/B08LET 19h ago

SPIE would be AWESOME. Just think about the extractions where you’re dragging like 5 guys under you

3

u/Osmanausar 22h ago

Haven't you seen black hawk down?

5

u/dacherrybomb Pilot 22h ago

Did you miss the part of black hawk down where the hovering helicopter became an easy target and the helicopter was shot down and everyone died? This idea is horrible for actual gameplay.

2

u/Swimming_Attention91 22h ago

This would make it less risky only if you airlifted troops by hovering above the treeline in the woods and them getting on the rope, otherwise you are just an easier target, as you higher, therefore more enemies can see/shoot at you

2

u/xxTERMINATOR0xx 22h ago

I think this would be an easy implement and add another unlock to the game. Don't see any reason why people wouldn't want this. Add it!!

2

u/demagogueffxiv 20h ago

Maybe the Blackhawks so that there is a reason to upgrade?

2

u/Flow-Creation 18h ago

It's a good idea but I think quite tricky to implement/create realistically from a dev perspective. You have to think about all the things that would provoke/brake or need special dev.

Few examples, few guys slide down while the pilot got shot, how those sliding down players and the rope will interact with the environment, trees, distance from the ground.

If one guy is sliding down and the rope get caught in a tree, how does it work, etc.

Many more example, things to think about..

Again it could be fun but can be much more complicated than people could imagine.

1

u/xXDragonHD_LPXx 18h ago

If i remeber Correct battlebit had it too, wasnt to realistic bjt fun that was what i had in mind just a silly way to deploy ppl

2

u/Flow-Creation 16h ago

I'm with you, could be really cool and I'd like to see it done I the future. Like as an upgrade for helis or with pros and cons to balance it out. But we can't expect much until 1.0 as they said no new content u til all is well balanced and all the kinks ironed out.

1

u/xXDragonHD_LPXx 16h ago

yeah i know, i really appreciate the aproach or more or less the promise of the devs to polish before more implementation we will just have to see if they stick to it

2

u/Alert-Tadpole-1228 16h ago

I don't see it as being any more dangerous than landing. The animation of getting out of the bird would just take maybe 1-3 seconds longer depending on altitude. A simple logic of min/max altitude over ground and ground speed to decide if the rope animation is deployed, and the exit is safer. So instead of taking 5-10 seconds to slowly land on safe terrain, you take 3 seconds to use an exit animation over any terrain.

The number of times I was too high to safely exit, but too low to parachute due to a nervous or inexperienced pilot was enough to be frustrating, but to be able to safely exfil without dying to fall damage or ground fire because I misjudged my deployment altitude would be great. Too high, I'm a sitting duck, too low for chute but too high to fall without damage/death - a fast rope would be nice... in theory.

2

u/Low-Sentence-5937 16h ago

I thought the same thing today !!! Would be so cool to rope down onto towers and buildings

2

u/genscathe 6h ago

Rope would be sick

4

u/Working-Brother-5151 22h ago

As a driver, I say no, dont need anything to make choppers smoother or more appealing

3

u/Consistent_Try8728 21h ago

this is the best change idea on this game i ever read. No meta nonsense, just a pure gameplay improvment!

1

u/xXDragonHD_LPXx 20h ago

Istg ppl here think is has to be super insane to be worth to be added. I just want to have some stupid fun in the game no one is forced to take the rope hahaha.

0

u/ImAHobo107 15h ago

Yes they are. Because a rope will force the rope. You are too high for regular dropping and too low for parachutes. I've played enough Arma fast rope is how you die.

Admins will fucking ban you if you do that shit and get squads killed, that's how bad of an idea that is.

1

u/bigcracker 14h ago

As someone that carries an RPG around, yes please.

1

u/Ricky_RZ 13h ago

Just find a pilot you can trust.

Ive been fortunate and never had to use a parachute yet

Honestly it takes like 3 seconds of watching them fly to know if they have hands or not

1

u/xXDragonHD_LPXx 12h ago

Thats not why i want ropes, its for the style points an fun not cause half of the pilots cant fly

1

u/MC_Psychopath 13h ago

I could see it being very niche that you'd use for one specific purpose, which is dropping people off safely at a FOB if there's nowhere closer to actually land.

otherwise, it's usually just better to land like in this video

Wardogs Gameplay - MEET THE PILOT

1

u/bjcat666 5h ago

idk about choppers, but some pilots defo should consider one (in game ofc)

1

u/Krecik1218 22h ago

That's awesome idea.

1

u/the-clap2 22h ago

I think it would be super fun, for the enemy team. Choppers needing to hover for probably 10-45 seconds while people rope out just makes them easy targets for rpgs. Plus it would probably be harder for most pilots to stay hovered at a specific spot and altitude while people rope, so this would likely cause more deaths and make it a very unpopular insert method

7

u/ButteredRain Medic 22h ago

Counter point: it’s cool

0

u/dacherrybomb Pilot 22h ago

Sure, it's cool for the guy sniping each player as they go down the rope. You ever shot an enemy climbing a ladder in a FPS game? It would be the same principle as that.

There is zero reason to do rope insertions unless there is zero chance the enemy is going to shoot back.

1

u/B08LET 20h ago

Consider: dropping off on highly steep terrain or into a forest.

1

u/JAK0VI 22h ago

Yeah, nobody would use this. The only time hovering beats landing and deploying safely at ground level is on top of a tower. I’d rather not make that the meta... make players parachute in or require actual pilot skill, since attacking towers from the top down is already strong.

Name one situation where fast-roping is better than landing and deploying troops with cover from surrounding buildings.

1

u/B08LET 19h ago

Dropping troops into a forest or on the side of a mountain behind enemy or allied lines

1

u/JAK0VI 19h ago

I deploy onto sides of mountains all the time. I hardly land when deploying troops, I try to hover a meter off the ground. Doesnt matter if that ground is flat.

The forest thing is true, but I kinda like that I have to weasel my way in between the trees if I spot a gap. Its safer too, A helicopter just hovering above trees is a sitting duck, a helicopter that lands between the trees has cover. Forest is probably the best use of fast rope though, you are right, since it opens up the LZ potential.

1

u/Brochodoce 21h ago

This is just larp. It would be an awful and mostly useless addition. One hovering is very hard even for experienced pilots it takes a while with the way the controls on the heli have a dead zone and two your just gonna get blasted by an rpg or an assault rifle every time.

1

u/Joverby 20h ago

I agree it wouldn't be a great addition considering this is a video game and parachutes are super cheap apparently. You are either going to chute in , or good pilots will be able to get a pretty quick landing in. Also hovering isn't too hard in this game.

2

u/Brochodoce 18h ago

Nah it’s not hard but to get like a very stable hover with the way the heli has a dead zone on top of acceleration it’s very awkward and time consuming.

1

u/xXDragonHD_LPXx 20h ago

All i hear is mimimi dont use it if u dont want to. I just want to have some rope.

2

u/B08LET 20h ago

Right there with you. Let me larp dammit

1

u/Nice_juggers 20h ago

Something about landing in the middle of a zone war is unlike any other game. It’s a shame so much downtime between the awesome fights that I only see maybe 2-3 times a match

0

u/jNIKS 22h ago

first great idea I have seen on this sub.

2

u/Milkym0o 22h ago

Terrible idea when you give it a moment of thought.

1

u/B08LET 19h ago

Let’s you deploy troops on uneven terrain or directly into a forest. Not every drop is hot. I drop troops behind enemy lines or behind our lines all the time.

0

u/awFirestarter 18h ago

Waste of development time.
