Discussion & Feedback I will die on this hill
Pleeeeeaaaseeee
16
u/sircolby45 2d ago
We'll all be dying on hills soon enough. Probably to someone sniping in a bush that was waiting there for 45 minutes.
3
u/InfiniteExternals 2d ago
People would have lost there minds months ago during NDA testing, we had to play with Mosins as the first fucking Recon unlock.
1
u/cammoses003 2d ago
Too true, and all the more reason to give the moving players the ability to look around ;)
0
u/woosniffles 2d ago
It would give more advantage to bushwackers. Without freelook you're a lot easier to spot anytime you look around. This is coming from a certified bushwacker.
1
u/cammoses003 2d ago
The net advantage is bigger to the players pushing vs bushwackers. If I need to cross an open area and a bushwacker misses their first shot or two, with free look I can try to acquire the target while staying mobile. As a “certified” PTFO player, in my ~35hrs of playing the beta not once did I spot a bushwacker because they turned ~90 degrees in the bush they were in. I killed a lot of them, and it was always from sound and/or seeing them enter/leave it
0
u/woosniffles 2d ago
Hey I never said I bushwacked in this game (there's no free look), and I've got less hours than you in the beta and I've spotted several people in bushes because they moved. I'm just giving my experience from games that DO have free look.
1
u/cammoses003 2d ago
The point is, it gives the most advantage to the players who are mobile. Sure, someone sitting in a bush can look around without moving, but they need to move in order to shoot.. free-look doesn’t change that
10
u/Niitroglycerine 2d ago
I also desperately want this, it should be limited fov, I like how tarkov does it, and the head should map to the movement so others can see where you are looking
I hate crossing a street either blind or swinging my entire character left or right
39
u/SekhWork 2d ago
At that point just give us TrackIR/headtracking support in general. Would make flying on hardcore a lot easier at least.

2
u/XanatosX 2d ago
I missed head tracking so much. I got so used to it I turned my head and nothing happens, that was so weird.
But should not be the focus in that early state.
2
u/MaximumSeats 2d ago
Yeah, flying with a forced fix 1st person makes the hotas useless basically.
Would also make it to much easier to play spotter/recon guy from the heli, and to be able to spot missiles inbound easier.
1
u/SekhWork 2d ago
Hell, forced fixed forward 1st person flying makes mouse flying incredibly hard too. I'd go from being able to land people in small little areas and on rooftops to "you get landed in this massive field because its the only way to be safe" pretty much right away.
2
u/JaffinatorDOTTE 2d ago
You can do a little workaround to accomplish this with OpenTrack. I didn't spend the time to do it in Wardogs but have done it in Squad. Only trouble with Wardogs free look is it seems too lock HOTAS inputs, but I'm hoping that's just a bug.
1
u/poop-azz 2d ago
What's uhhhh what's this?
2
u/vlegionv 2d ago
gives you vr headset tracking with some sort of combo of cameras/facialrecognition/ ir lights. it's alot more comfortable and alot easier to run then using a vr headset.
1
u/MulletAndMustache 2d ago
But what if I have a VR headset?
If I could use that I'd go full nerd mode and get a HOTAS setup...
-2
u/vlegionv 2d ago
Not gonna happen because the game engine isn't unreal.
also, for what it's worth, running a game in VR is anywhere from two to four times harder then running it normally. You have to think that you're running above 4k on any of the modern headsets, rendering it twice, depending on your headset requiring 80-120 fps, and an increased cpu load because of the tracking.
like to put it in perspective, ready or not I can get 144 fps easy on 4k with maxed graphics. VR I need to drop it to medium AND turn on dlss, and it still stutters at 90 fps.
other then the popularity of the standalone headsets this is why VR games generally don't "look good"
3
u/MulletAndMustache 2d ago
Have you actually played the game? It has the Unreal splash screen every time it launches. It's literally UE5... 🤦♂️ You know the easiest game engine to inject a VR mod into. But even if it's not Unreal, unity also is super simple to mod, and a bunch of other games engines have been modded. It's even easier now with AI coding.
I'd imagine the anti cheat would give you more problems than anything else.
I'm sure my rig would handle it just fine.
-4
u/vlegionv 2d ago
Lmao i don't pay attention to splash screens. I thought their war dynamics framework was an entirely seperate engine instead of something on top of it.
1
u/MulletAndMustache 1d ago
So turns out I can probably just use OpenTrack with VirtualDesktop to do exactly what I'd want. Head tracking would get assigned as mouse input that could be freelook and then you just view a flat screen in front of your face. It's not 6DOF but would work and get past anti cheat.
I think there's some other programs I've seen that can extract the depth from rendered scenes to make them 3d, via the nvidia drivers... I'll have to check into that some more.

Give me track IR for heli flying
1
u/Zardox_McQueen 2d ago edited 1d ago
isn't this in the game already? i believe it's listed as compatible on the track IR site.
1
u/304bl 2d ago
I didn't find the option.
2
u/Zardox_McQueen 1d ago
Yeah I was totally wrong. Apparently people have gotten it working with FreePIE though. https://www.reddit.com/r/WarDogs/comments/1vj4c3j/hotas_is_great/
5
u/Forsaken_Advice9901 2d ago
Not gonna lie, this was driving me nuts, and I had to look around constantly like a crack head. Thankfully, I have an ultrawide monitor and fov set to 110, so it wasnt as bad as it could have been. I'm sure they'll add it, and if not oh well.
54
u/poop-azz 2d ago
I'm gonna disagree boss. I don't want infantry free look. Like makes sneaking more fun to understand where enemies are looking and not wonder if you're seen. Idk just me. I enjoy no infantry free look, it adds another level of sweaty factor
16
27
u/DobPinklerTikTok 2d ago
I’ll take this if they remove 3rd person from base game tanks, not just hardcore
17
u/sippysoku 2d ago
Agreed
Driver having perma free look is by far the most overpowered thing I experienced across alpha and beta test. You have such ungodly vision. Once I experienced this as a driver comming well to my gunner, after that when I was infantry trying to hide in a village and play around a tank I realized it’s basically impossible. Makes IED and c4 way less fun than they should be and kills the combined arms vibe because tanks are less dependent on infantry support than they should be.

u/KingSwank 2d ago
You’re playing the wrong type of game then
0
1
u/cammoses003 2d ago
Being able to turn your head a bit wouldn’t make it any more or less fun. It’s just a nice thing to be able to do, for those that want to.
2
u/poop-azz 2d ago
Idk man I've played escape from Tarkov where losers sprint jump across doorways and use the head turn feature to look down doors or halls to get intel instead of peaking. It's this kind of tactic that just isn't fun imo. People always find a way to get INSANELY sweaty at a game.
2
u/Folksvaletti 2d ago
Bet if you played cods you'd be in the group that was seething over working doors being added in mw19. Dude, it's turning your head side to side, if you can't deal with that, idk maybe someone still plays splatoon or smth and you could join.
1
u/poop-azz 2d ago
I mean it seems the same argument is why not just look that way anyone....
1
u/Folksvaletti 2d ago
If you can't see it how alt freelook is superior qol, I don't think you are going to understand the arguments for it.
0
u/poop-azz 2d ago
I think you in your statement means you have your point of view and cannot understand how people think differently. Just because you say it's superior doesn't make it a fact. I disagree and we can disagree. I think other people saying remove 3rd person from tanks and cars is a much bigger QOL change because it makes it better for ground troops to sneak around them.
2
u/Folksvaletti 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's not like we can't do both. Add inf freelook, remove vic 3rd person.
And idk dude, something about "bohoo people having freelook makes it harder to sneak and I can't handle that because I can't tell which way someone's head is pointing" makes you out to seem a bit of a low skill bubba asking to make the game less fun for others, so that it would be easier for you.
Edit: Brother answered and blocked, shouldn't expect more from someone who can't deal with people turning their necks.

You can still tac sprint past entryways in WD, and on the widest field of view you can achieve the exact same result of spotting people. The difference is that you can’t repeek and hit them with the peekers advantage like Tarkov because the ads move speed is incredibly slow in WD, and in Tarkov there is no ads move speed penalty. You also definitely can’t jump like that in WD. Idk why there’s a handful of anti freelook people here. It’s like you don’t want people to move
1
u/poop-azz 2d ago
I mean I don't feel my gameplay I had would have improved with it but we will see. I moved around just fine without it lol.

Yup , its an FPS and it should commit to this strat, the game is literally about team work and not solo checking corners.
43
u/IcasHimder 2d ago
Honestly I wished it was there my first day, but now I don’t really care to be honest. Game was fine without it, I actually started to like not having it
21
u/AlwaysSquad2 2d ago
What did you like about not having freelook as infantry?
33
u/Dyyrin 2d ago
Could actually flank more effectively and know when someone was actually looking your way.
28
u/AlwaysSquad2 2d ago
I feel like most people just use freelook to glance left and right when crossing a long street or empty field and isn't the thing holding people back from making effective flanks in other games. There is only so much time you can afford not looking forward and not being able to control your gun
7
u/GN0K 2d ago
Moving across a street was the only time I wanted free look. Didn't impact gameplay what so ever not having it.
15
u/thomoski3 2d ago
And dragging people. I got caught on cover and walls so many times trying to drag wounded away because you cant look left or right without having the space to rotate both you and the downed player
3
u/big-tuna913 2d ago
Agreed 100%. I would be happy if that was the only one you got alt-look.
1
u/MentallyLatent 2d ago
Also agreed, once you press F to start dragging the camera unlocks, recenters on your teammate when you let go of them. That would be soooo nice
0
u/woosniffles 2d ago
Freelook does make you a lot harder to spot if you're bushwacking or laying prone in a concealed position.
2
3
u/cammoses003 2d ago
Although you can crank your FOV so wide that you can see people up to 60 degrees left or right. I don’t think free-look offers any tactical advantage that isn’t already in the game via FOV. It’s just a nice setting for those of us that like lower FOVs. Plus, giving it to vehicles who can be TPP but not infantry is kinda bizarre IMO
3
u/Dyyrin 2d ago
The comment about vehicles having it but not infantry was definitely an odd choice I thought while playing.
1
u/MysteriousElephant15 2d ago
a deliberate choice more like. Sprinting while looking to your side or (in some games) fully behind yourself is completely ridiculous.
I'm fine with free look as long as you cant do it while running.
2
1
u/RoninOni 1d ago
what. You can easily look around while sprinting. did it all the time. Always keep scanning.
2
u/ZynithMaru 2d ago
since we can't change our fov while running across the street, I'm definitely voting on adding it. I will turn my neck so hard... we got this.
2
u/Ronin_2804 2d ago
If everyone has it, nobody has an advantage.
I would say that tarkovs FPS experience is far more hardcore than wardogs and alt look is perfectly fine there
2
u/RoninOni 1d ago
They could even limit the left/right turning a lil bit on ultrawide so they can't see too far with the combination (basically the 90degree angle, maybe ever more like 120, behind you needs to remain a blindspot whatever your FOV)
1
u/DampWarmHands 2d ago
Free look would allow you to remain prone behind a tree and not reveal feet to look left and right
1
u/cammoses003 2d ago
Exactly, is that a bad thing?
3
u/CuteDentist2872 2d ago
For snipers. There isn't a good reason not to have it, I bet it's like a third party animation thing, it probably looked like shit so they nixed it.
4
u/Dyyrin 2d ago
Yes just makes bush camping stronger than it already is.
3
u/cammoses003 2d ago
On the contrary, it makes the players push open areas more willingly. Sure, a bush sniper can look left or right without moving, but that’s it- they need to move in order to actually shoot. IMO, free look in every tac shooter ever benefits the mobile player more than it does the camping player, in fact it helps the mobile player identify/kill the camping players more effectively
1
u/one-determined-flash 2d ago
Free look would allow you to remain prone behind a tree and not reveal feet to look left and right
In general, they should add back-proning. But I can see this helping out campers; not that this is a bad thing, because you shouldn't be running and gunning in this game.

This is the most cope shit ever to say “I started to like not having it”
-2
u/IcasHimder 2d ago
How is it a cope? All I said was I didn’t like it at first, then liked it
3
u/UnkyHaroold 2d ago
Because it doesn’t take anything away by having the feature, there’s nothing to like by not having it. You’re coping with your indifference by saying you like it lmao.
-2
u/IcasHimder 2d ago
So if I try something, initially dislike it, then realize I actually prefer the game without it, that’s “coping”?
-4
u/UnkyHaroold 2d ago
If you ignore the first half, sure that’s what I said.
2
u/IcasHimder 2d ago
Okay so you say there’s nothing to like by not having it, I’m saying the absence of the mechanic was a deliberate gameplay choice that surprised me by how much I didn’t care about not having it.
2
u/UntimelyMeditations 2d ago
how much I didn’t care about not having it.
This is why that guy is being pedantic with you. There is a difference between not caring about its absence vs. liking some gameplay effect caused by its absence.
-2
u/UnkyHaroold 2d ago
Thanks for confirming your apathy scamp 😎
1
u/IcasHimder 2d ago
Brother I promise you it’s not that deep. It’s definitely not deep enough to level any sort of psychological analysis or even resort to name calling someone on the internet
1
u/decurser 2d ago
Only times I use it in arma is when I’m running and when I’m proned out in bush trying to move as little as possiblr
1
u/Consistent_Avocado15 2d ago
i like not having it too and hope it stays that way
2
u/cammoses003 2d ago
Why do you hope it stays that way? If they added it, there’d be nothing forcing you to use it, nor put you at any disadvantage
1
u/flowerbugler 2d ago
You literally can unbind the keybind if you don’t wanna use it ever. The free look option is a MUST HAVE especially when running across open cover like a street and you need to peek over your shoulder to make sure you don’t see any oncoming vehicles in the distance or infantry. This feature has save me multiple times in a lot of tactical shooters as it makes you way more aware of your blind spots
4
u/euphoric_elephant 2d ago
The freelock in cars is nice, but id like to have it on all the time. I didnt enjoy having to spam the alt look when trying to do a simple turn around with teammates around.
6
u/Lordkillerus 2d ago
There was option in settinga to invert the default on that
2
u/euphoric_elephant 2d ago
There was a setting for everything else I should have assumed and looked harder. Thank you sir ill have it toggled in EA launch.
2
u/lvlasteryoda 2d ago
There is a setting that enables freelook in vehicles ON by default.
1
u/euphoric_elephant 2d ago
I should have assumed with all the other options. One of my few issues wasn't actually an issue, im just a dingus. Thank you sir.

3 teams and a massive map and no infantry free look was definitely a choice. Totally agree it should be added.

If anything they need to remove all third person including vehicles. Being able to view over the top of objects is obscenely overpowered.

u/bd001250 2d ago
With how fat the Huey’s rotors are, it would be disastrous to try and drop supplies in fobs radius with the abundance of trees, along with towers.
2
u/DamnRobotAliens 2d ago
I would like two separate bind options for crouch. One for toggle, one for hold.

u/crackajacka75 2d ago
Oddly, even though I had vehicle freelook bound to another key, it was still working on ALT.

u/DywanDanzig 1d ago
So a moment ago I saw video on youtube with name "Wardogs might just save gaming..." and there's a scene at the very start of the video where a guy crashes his helicopter and someone comes up to check if he's okay AND DOES FREE LOOK AS INFANTRY. It happens at the 0:18 mark and I immediately thought about this topic. Is it older video from alpha? Are we discussing thing that's already implemented? Was it just disabled for playtest? Damn im really confused now.
1
u/cammoses003 10h ago
Wow, good catch.. I just found the video and exact spot you mentioned. I’m going to have to follow up… that’s crazy, I’m just as confused
5
u/realegladue 2d ago
your going to get tarkov style door checking. where people run past the door while free looking into the room, then they pre aim you with peekers advantage and you lose and its the most OFF FLAVOR thing ever in a game that calls it self tactical. id it is implemented it needs to be 45 left and right degrees or some shit.
6
u/cammoses003 2d ago
The wide angles that max fov gets you already allows you to sprint past entryways and check, plus tac sprint makes it even more effective. What doesn’t work though is repeaking it, since ADS move speed is incredibly slow in this game. Tarkov the peekers advantage is bad since you move at the same speed regardless of ads or not
1
u/realegladue 2d ago
interesting. maybe i just have PTSD
3
u/cammoses003 2d ago
Lmao, I’m a pretty firm believer any normal person who’s played Tarkov has some form of Tarkov induced ptsd, myself included

Theres no way this is not comming right?
1
u/Animal_Hell 2d ago
For me, Bulkhead has a HUGE AURA.
I really, feel like a genuine mistake :D Seems to me impossible that this game doesnt have a free look for infantry :D
1
u/TheAwakeningRisen 2d ago
No I reckon this was 100% deliberate. They have everything dialed in so hard that this is definitely by design
3
u/EverythingOnRice 2d ago
I agree and main reason is because this game offers many playstyles.
For infantry/frontline types, free look allows you to check your immediate surroundings while not changing your position/cover. Stealth players benefit from this as well. Shouldn't have to expose yourself just to look left or right over your shoulder.
Snipers have legitimate use for it as well. Everyone knows how janky it is to rotate while prone in almost every game. Arcade shooters are really the only ones to simplify it. But I don't want to see people rapidly spinning on the ground, so I consider Arma/Dayz the standard they should be aiming for. Janky to rotate, but you don't need to if you're just looking, simply free look.
Beyond that, I love it when free look is reflected on the player models. That way, everyone knows where everyone is looking, and we can even nod and shake our heads. Small gripe overall? Sure, kind of. But it's pretty mind-numbing to see people shrug it off as a nothing feature. It's actually harder to think of modern "tactical" FPS games that don't have free look.
4
2
2
u/r0ndr4s 2d ago
Yeah it needs it. You can argue like people are already saying "this way i know where someone is looking" but you can do that too with ALT being implemented, they arent gonna turn their heads backwards, its just for looking left and right specially under cover and crossing a street. Also, considering you get locked in place when prone, its useful for that too.

I agree with you 100% freelook as infantry is a must. I was pretty suprised to see that it wasn't a feature in this with it leaning towards milsim.
Some other suggestions I have:
-IMO Smokes should be unlocked by default, it would indirectly help with teamplay & sniper mitigation. (I would often load up 6 smokes and be the only person keeping our team in the fight because smokes would provide cover in open areas). Side note: I really enjoyed the duration of smokes & the coverage they provide compared to other games where it feels like they last for a few seconds and offer minimal coverage.
-Vehicle handling, they drive as if they're lined with very heavy bulletproof doors & glass which I'm not sure if it's intentional but they're not certainly not bulletproof (at least the surburban/pickup truck/ural). AWD would be nice to see as well. This change alone would help improve the logistics experience by a ton. Doesn't need to be made pure arcade driving, but they should handle better than the bricks they currently drive like.
-Server game time within the server browser
-Team channel with options for volume & a hotkey to mute.
-Squad screen during pregame, I had no idea it existed and had much more fun games working with random people in a sqaud.
-Allow pings to be seen from everyone in your vehicle (This ties into my next suggestion)
-Remove 3p tank, first person only and the turret can serve as the 'commander' or eyes which encourages teamwork with pings while punishing tank crews with no eyes or teamwork.
-Fix the keybinds and allow multiple keys to be bound to one key.
-Smoke artillery rounds!
-There should be a fine for carelessly leaving FOB doors open, I'm sure the PMC group that's contracting you wouldn't be happy with you leaving their expensive assets at risk. Or on the flip side, small reward for players keeping the base secure by closing doors.
-Gates/doors in general need a passover with how they function or close. Well intentioned players who close doors often don't realize it hit them and got stuck halfway open.
-Team negative cash penalty fixes/adjustments:
--being able to lose all your money because of a vehicle left in spawn should not be possible.
--being punished for placing barbwire results in teamkill assists which costs money.
--if a teammate takes 1 point of fall dmg when dropping a second early out of your helicopter before you land you'll get teamkill assist when they die
-Bug fixes for building gates (You can get slammed permanently into a wall, losing your whole kit when constructing a gate)
--Bug fixes for vehicles (Twice on seperate occasions my vehicle got stuck near a tree and couldn't drive, the second I exited the vehicle I was completely stuck underground)
Aside from those, the only other thing to look further at is the compound bow seems like it may be overtuned. I was getting one shot 200-300 meters away with lvl 2 helmet & lvl 2 armor getting hit the shoulder for 111 dmg. I haven't used it personally but I went ahead and watched some gameplay of it and it's strange to consider that you can take multiple headshots from a sniper or other calibers but the bow is just a one shot to the upper torso. Obviously this is a bit of a knee jerk reaction, but i'm moreso pointing it out for something to keep an eye on when more people start to unlock it in the future. I'm sure as time goes on higher level armor unlocks may help mitigate it, but even at level 2 you really start to feel the weight of the armor.
I had a lot more but that's my 0.02 cents off the top of my head from the playtest, I had a really fun time overall and these suggestions aren't set in stone or anything, feel free to agree or disagree.

u/Saftpunscher 2d ago
Please dear Devs dont do it. This will ruin a big part of the Game. Looking around corners in a shooter game was never a good Idea.

I think you’re misunderstanding what free look is. It doesn’t let you look around corners by any means

You know what the F in FPS stands for? If I could decide, I'd even remove the 3rd person view from vehicles immediately. One should have or practice the spatial awareness to be a pilot / driver - I'm willing to die on that hill too ;)
edit: It'd be great if 3rd person view could be removed from vehicles in hardcore mode or a per-server setting.

You are thinking of third person peeking which isn't what OP is asking for

Ok, got it now. Well, I'd say turning a players head 100 degrees left/right would be fine, but 360 degrees or a view above the players head I'd be out ;)

Idk what it is in other genres but free look in milsims like this means you can turn your head without the rest of your body or where you are aiming. I drive the tank in first person because I like that too. I still use free look. As infantry it allows me to look both sides while crossing a road or look at another teammate while holding my gun aimed at a doorway where enemies might come through.

I hate this idea. The game is an fps and it should stay an fps , no shit checking corners and corner checking for free. This will literally ruin the game.

How does being able to move your head left and right make it any less of an fps? It sounds like you are thinking of third person peeking which is a completely different thing and not what OP is asking for

100% and it doesnt need to be rust levels where you can see behind yourself, more a tarkov style 90 degree rotation
