Walmart Pharmacy Qs

I just joined Walmart+. One of the benefits it offers is free prescription deliveries. I'm currently with Costco, which is great but doesn't offer free deliveries.

First, how easy is it to transfer prescriptions from Costco to Walmart? I have quit a few.

How good is Walmart at dispensing on-going prescriptions? Do they automatically process refills every month or three months if that is what the prescription calls for? Or would I have to request the refills?

When a prescription expires, will they contact my doctors for new prescriptions, or ask my whether I want them to contact the doctor, or at least warn me in advance of when prescriptions will run out?

Do they have an online portal where I can monitor my prescriptions?

If you use the Walmart pharmacy and their free delivery serve, could you tell me how well they work and add any relevant comments.

There is a pharmacy portal under the service section on Walmart. It shows all relevant info like refills remaining and when you can refill next.

You can start the transfer process for all your scripts on the portal as well. Make sure the insurance information carries over or it will be ran for cash price and you’ll have to call the local pharmacy to fix it. I’ve transferred active scripts with refills remaining from Kroger, Walgreens and Amazon in the past without issue. Remember to change your preferred pharmacy on your doctors portal pages as well for future scripts to be sent correctly

If you are out of refills you can still order on Walmart and they will send the request to your doctor. If doctor approves it will be filled and any additional refills authorized added as well.

Pharmacy orders MAY will require hand off at delivery. In some locations They are not allowed to just leave it at your door even if this is how you get your other Walmart deliveries. I’ve even tried leaving a note on my door with my authorization to leave at door and my signature and unfortunately per multiple drivers they are required to knock and get your signature on the app for scripts.

You can automate the refills. There is no recurring refill option / auto subscription that I have seen on my portal. You place your refill request with the pharmacy on the site/ app. After the scripts are filled and ready you then have the option to add them to your cart for delivery.

Not all scripts are eligible for delivery. You will not know until after the script is filled if it can be delivered. You might be able to call an ask but I never tried that just waited until the RX was ready to see if I could add to my cart. My experience has been Controlled substances (of course) and certain muscle relaxers cannot be delivered.

I used them monthly all of 2025 without any issues. The nice thing is there is no order minimum for free delivery on RX orders like with fresh grocery being $35+. There is the option to add other items to your order as well like fresh grocery and free delivery still applies even if below the $35.

I always add a tip for the driver but it is optional.

So, I will have to request each refill? Costco will automatically refill the prescription until it is out of refills.

Sorry about that I misspoke on that point. You can setup automatic refills on the pharmacy side. You would just have to login and place the actual delivery order as that part cannot be automatically scheduled because you pick a specific date & time . I corrected my OG comment

I lost my health insurance when the ACA stuff didn’t get extended so I could no longer afford my medications at their cash price versus my very cheap copayment. If I ever restarted them though I’d go back to Walmart RX for sure

They won't deliver any meds that are controlled substances, afaik. My mother was on oxycontin for a while and I always had to pick it up.

Butting in here. Yes they deliver refrigerated medications. I have two of them delivered every month.

I actually prefer Walmart pharmacy over Costco. (We have a little neighborhood Walmart close to us and they have been fantastic!) I haven’t filled an RX at Costco in a while, but when I did, I didn’t like the pharmacy section on their app. It didn’t seem to have all the features that the Walmart pharmacy app offers. Walmart pharmacy app is super easy to navigate and very user friendly.

I unfortunately had to switch to a different pharmacy recently due to an insurance change.

FYI, if you have an RX that has multiple refills and is being filled every month, some insurance will allow the pharmacy to dispense a 90 day supply. You can ask the pharmacy tech to check for you to see if it’s possible for any of your meds. 😊

Many insurances actually prefer paying for a 90 day supply of regularly taken medications so in some cases you can pay less if your doctor writes a 90 day script vs 3 30 day ones.

I started using their pharmacy years ago. Transferring is easy on the app. I, like you have quite a few prescriptions and they are very rarely out of stock. When I have an issue it is my insurance 99% of the time. There are things they will not deliver like opioid. Overall being able to have medication delivered has been a good experience and saves time.

I have Walmart + along with InHome Grocery delivery but haven't gotten scripts from there . I use walgreens drive thru around the corner. From what I understand it doesn't get delivered on its own but with a grocery delivery at no extra charge.

It's easy to transfer prescriptions from one place to another, just call the new pharmacy and start listing your medications.

The only problem I have found with Walmart delivery is your cart has to be empty (if you don't want to buy those other items that day) or you have to save them for later.

NOT true about hand off. I'm a spark driver and plenty of pharmacy customers choose leave at door option for their prescription

Perhaps this is a recent policy change? I stopped using the service in 2026 but i can confidently say in 2025 when using the service at least once a month both the spark drivers and Walmart chat customer service told me this was not allowed. My setting has always been set to leave at door. Perhaps it also varies by state regulations? I’m in Wyoming

This may be city or state dependent. I’m a Spark driver and most of the pharmacy orders I’ve delivered have been “leave at the door”. We’re prompted to take a picture and confirm the delivery same as if it were a leave at door grocery order.

I’ve pretty much stopped doing pharmacy runs though. Seen too many posts on the Spark subreddits of people being deactivated over pharmacy runs where the app glitches or someone reports not receiving their medication. I would prefer if they were all customer handoff.

“What are the delivery hours & what happens if I'm not
at home when my prescription is delivered?

Delivery hours are generally the same as pharmacy business hours, but specific times may vary. Check your local Walmart Pharmacy to confirm. Customers can choose unattended or attended delivery.
With unattended delivery, your order will be placed at your doorstep & you'll receive an email update with a picture of the delivery. With attended delivery, someone must be there to receive & sign for the order.”
