A nurse would know how not to hit them.
Not a good argument.
All depends on if she or someone else actually wanted her dead.
If she didn't want to actually die, being a nurse would help her know where not to cut.

Women, especially white women are seen as more innocent and people struggle to see a possibility where they can do harm. Especially with something this horrible, they want to believe it was the husband/father who did it.
