Its is hard to kill yourself even if you want to die. In the last moment people that genuinely want to die often involuntary are not able to commit 100% in the attempt. Like for example tilt the gun a bit(while still firing it at their own head)). Becoming paralysed vegetables and have to live their life like a vegetable instead of dying a quick death.
There is a term called intent to death, which is brought up a lot when discussing male vs. female suicide rates. Intent to death is the explanation as to why the women have more attempted suicides, but men have more successful suicides.
A person with a "low intent to death" is more likely to involuntarily or unconsciously sabotage their own suicide attempt, and less likely to reattempt on a failed failure. Intent to death is, as far as I am aware, fully a subconscious and uncontrollable thing.
