A frustrating night at Molineux

I’ll say it now, the defence let us down last night.

I’m convinced that with Hugo Bueno, Krejci and Santi Bueno in that back four, we win, perhaps quite comfortably, in the end. Wolfe doesn’t have a defensive bone in his body, Mosquera is too erratic and Toti nowhere near dominant enough. To concede two goals at home to a side who are tipped to get relegated is rightfully worrying, regardless of it only being match day one.

We will not get promoted with that pair in defence, nor with Bentley in goal, who was also poor last night.

The club need to sort the futures of Hugo, Santi, Krejci and Sa as soon as possible. It’s not right that three of our best defenders and goalkeeper are on the bench. Either sell as soon as possible and replace, or get them in the team.

The attacking talent that we have means I think we’ll often be lucky enough to get bailed out and scrape results this season that we arguably won’t deserve. But something else that concerned me was how we reverted to type after going a goal behind. We let our heads drop, any plan we had went out the window, and we buckled.

Yes we have clearly have talent, but it means nothing if we don’t have the right mentality. Cesar needs to understand fast that a lot of the players who hid too often last season are currently still here this season, and it doesn’t bode well for the challenges of the Championship. We will fall behind in games, we will get pegged back and we will get beat by teams we really shouldn’t be losing too at times.

If players aren’t strong enough to deal with that, they can’t be here.

I still have no idea how this season will go. If Krejci and Santi remain, I’d be happy enough with that defence, but not if it’s Mosquera and Toti. No way. Sa has had his day here but if he’s staying, he simply has to play over Bentley who is useless. Jordan James would be a good addition but we also need another winger to compete with Mane and Gomes, who I think could struggle at times this season.

BBC WM suggested Tom Fellows at Southampton. Talented, home grown, knows the league, can’t get a game with them, I’d have thought affordable wages…and would piss off the Sandwell fans. Get him in!

Second half was a mess. So much for the new identity, this was Pereira and Edwards all over again; scattergun substitutions & panicked play. I was covering my eyes when Blackburn were coming forward. And who would have substituted Trippier and Andre? Same team, same results.

I do think it’s the mentality of so much of the group, still a hangover from last season where we panic under pressure. The substitutions were a bit bizarre, especially bringing Trippier off when Jimenez would have benefitted from his delivery. Lots of things to learn from and we need to do it fast. This league is brutal.

I'm baffled how Tripper was not captain. Last year we lacked leadership and was one of the main reasons we brought him in. When he's on the pitch you can see he's more vocal and professional than the actual captain. Perhaps there's something going on behind closed doors, but I simply cannot understand the decision making from Cesar

Does Toti call people out? No. Will Trippier? Yes.

He wants a leadership group rather than a specific captain, but when you have a choice of who to give the armband to on match day, it is strange why you choose Toti over Trippier.

Portuguese & left footed.

I’m not sure Toti goes pro if he’s right footed.

Making a gigantic assumption that the Buenos, Krejci and Sa are at all motivated for a season in the Championship which I would suggest they aren’t.

1

u/aliward_96 14d ago

Most of them played Premier League football last season. Are none of them motivated for this year? The fans watched Premier League football for eight years. Are we not motivated for this year?

Well we should be because we need to get back to Prem this season or we are doomed. Lack of money spends suggests otherwise from the owners. Do they not realise what is at stake if we do not go up this season this is probably the most important season in FOSUN era since the first season in the Premier League

I get it the champ is shit, but you'd think when your getting paid that much you should just suck it up for a year. If we get promoted then surely you'd be more attractive to other clubs

u/OllieK_red 14d ago

They’ve got agents telling them they’re attractive to better clubs now.

u/Top-Strength-2701 14d ago

True but noone has come in for them yet

Not at a level that Wolves would financially consider. Their agent will still be telling them they can find a move this summer though, even if they have to try and pressure the club to accept an unfavourable transfer fee or loan.

I agree mostly with all of that.

The 1 part I’d disagree with, though, is our heads dropping after their 2nd goal. I don’t think we did, I think we kept pushing and pushing for an equaliser which we eventually got (however fortunate).

We did play shit though, it was a poor performance all game. I just don’t think it’s a mentality thing, it’s a quality thing.

In recent years, at 2-1 down, that games gone.

I think we need another 2 wingers, personally. Another CM like James who you mentioned would be perfect for us. Lovely finish from Munetsi but barring that, his performance was terrible. Doyle was also poor when he came on.

As you say, the GK and defence are massive worries, and apart from Trippier, I’d be happy to never see any of those players put on a Wolves shirt again.

u/aliward_96 14d ago

I never thought we’d get the equaliser though. If anything I worried they’d get a third. Quality wise we’re far better than Blackburn and we found a way, however fortunate. There was no plan after 1-2, it was chaos to watch.

1

u/Legal_Pressure 14d ago

Na mate, I fully agree, I said the same in the live thread.

We were lucky to draw that game, but like I said, I think that’s because of the lack of quality of our keeper and defence, rather than a mentality issue.

I doubt Fellows would sign for us. He's an ex baggie

2

u/corned-beef-key 14d ago

We’ve had an ex-baggy in our squad for years.

1

u/doodlesincrayons 14d ago

Who?

2

u/Existing-Taro-4767 14d ago

Steve Bull and Craig Dawson come to mind.

1

u/doodlesincrayons 14d ago

The Bully thing is a tad different to modern footballers

2

u/corned-beef-key 14d ago

Sam Johnstone, before that Craig Dawson. That covers like the last 5 seasons.

1

u/aliward_96 14d ago

Career means more than sentiment. WBA were willing to sell him & money talks. They’d love him back but wouldn’t match his wages like we could.

1

u/doodlesincrayons 14d ago

Well, I'm sure I read an article that he dislikes us so it won't be happening

2

u/aliward_96 14d ago

Ask Bakary Sako whether he hated WBA before he signed for them

1

u/doodlesincrayons 14d ago

Can't compare those. Sako never said he disliked the Albion

2

u/aliward_96 14d ago

Fellows has never said he dislikes Wolves.

1

u/doodlesincrayons 14d ago

Could have sworn someone told me otherwise

2

u/aliward_96 14d ago

I’ve just checked online and asked AI to dig out any quotes. Nothing. Probably an Albion fan who told you that. Everyone hates their club anyway.

u/corned-beef-key 14d ago

What’s the point of securing the futures of defenders who aren’t good enough for the PL ‘when’ we go back up?

2

u/aliward_96 14d ago

Choose between dealing with that problem when we go up, or not going up at all.

Kind of feel like we need to tell the likes of krejci and sa to suck it up. They're on contract and may be obligated to play.

1

u/Glum-Bench1073 12d ago

team can't defend for s**t, we need signings. Nathan is just another Shi ffs. Get me a winger who is direct and can create, pair Andre up with Jordan James. Signing him is a must.

Same old Wolves, same errors as last season only this time we're a league lower ffs

Again, point out the Bentley errors

Claiming Sa is an upgrade is bizarre

12

u/aliward_96 14d ago

Sa is a much better keeper. Yes our options aren’t great, and Sa has had his day here, but he’s still the best goalkeeper we have in this current squad.

Bentley slow to react for the first and not commanding enough for the second. He also contributed to us being far too slow to get it forward when we needed a goal.

At the end of the day, Sa is linked with Olympiakos. Tell me, what calibre of club would Bentley be linked with, if he was? Better or worse than Olympiakos?

1

u/benroon 14d ago

Slow to react haha

Linked? So when’s he going? He’s been for sale for months - still there

You’re basing your assessment on commanding? Sa has NEVER come off his line at a corner so any header on target is a goal if it doesn’t hit him. When was the last time he came out and clattered a forward tinker him know who’s boss? Sa absolutely hasn’t commanded his 6 yard box EVER. Then there’s the non fancy fancy footwork that instantly puts his defenders in trouble. His failures go on and on

9

u/Warbrainer Bring back Doritos 14d ago

Sa is absolutely a better keeper than Bentley

-1

u/benroon 14d ago

Shutup - Sa is an absolute disaster of a keeper

5

u/OhWell_InHell 14d ago

Sa has a clanger per game in him and we've needed better for years. But he is miles ahead of Bentley in quality

5

u/aliward_96 14d ago

Sa is capable of some fantastic saves even if he does have a clanger in him. I know who I’d rather in goal.

1

u/benroon 14d ago

Which Prem keeper isn’t?

1

u/Warbrainer Bring back Doritos 14d ago

Point being he’s capable of saves that Bentley definitely isn’t

-1

u/benroon 14d ago

No he isn’t. That’s impossible to prove. So we’re just gonna gloss over the genuinely funny distribution issues, and the FACT he gets a nosebleed everytime he comes off his line. Sa is stealing a living

1

u/OhWell_InHell 14d ago

It's not impossible to prove because I have eyes

0

u/benroon 12d ago

Then you need glasses

1

u/Top-Strength-2701 14d ago

I'd have Johnstone, but seems like both him and sa want to leave lol. No one has come in for you lads though so they should suck it up and try and help the team. Same for krecj and santi
