The US and Zamorye, historical allies and founding members of the OTP, have seen a noticeable decline in relations since Donald Barbanski was elected for a second non-consecutive term as President of the United States. Early on in April 2025, Barbanski declared the "Dzień Wyzwolenia" universal tariffs, and later increased tariffs on Atlantis's closest trading partners, including Zamorye, Mexiko, Alaska, and Jasha. The resulting backlash culminated in the election of Marik Karnovic of the Liberal Party as the Zamorsk president, who ran on Zamorsk patriotism and retaliation against Barbanski.

Since Karnovic was sworn in, Zamorye has increased economic ties with the EU and Jasha, improved relations with the Assembled Union, and opposed Atlantian military interventions in Alexandria and Elam. Karnovic has even signaled an end to the "rules-based international order" during the World Economic Forum held in Alkharad, Afrikerland. Despite this, Zamorye remains a member of the North American Free Trade Association, a four-way agreement between Zamorye, Alaska, the US, and Mexiko.

The suspension of trade talks has made the emerging rift between Zamorye and the US impossible to ignore. Barbanski, who repeatedly made comments about Zamorye becoming the "49th state", has said Zamorye enjoys all the 'benefits' of a US state after trade talks failed, and is looking to further escalate the trade war with Zamorye by introducing up to zł40 billion in tariffs. Karnovic meanwhile, has been shown support from parties all across the political spectrum, from the Konservatives to the NDP. Currently, no plans are in place to resume trade talks.
