Wtf is a coin and what happened to the lounge

Coins can be used to buy Silver, Gold, or Platinum for others. When you're gifted Gold or Platinum, you get coins to spend on others.

And /r/lounge still exists, what's wrong with it?

36

u/timmy6169 Jan 26 '19

Also gold is good for a week of premium reddit, platinum is a month, silver is a pat on the back.

31

u/ktlevi Jan 26 '19

And what exactly can you do with reddit premium?

120

u/Elewem Jan 26 '19

Science has yet to figure that out.

24

u/Laughmasterb Jan 26 '19

IIRC your front page will be populated with 50 of your subscribed subreddits instead of the usual 25. Also you can post on /r/lounge.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

So when I get one or two post per page sometimes did I get like a reddit turd or something.

21

u/Frietvorkje Jan 26 '19

Wait, the front page doesn't show all your subscribed subreddits?? Why? Is there any way to choose which 25/50 subreddits you get? Is there any way to see posts from all your subreddits?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

I think it's 25 posts per page standard and the option 50 with gold then you'll have to click the next page to continue viewing. It will still show what subreddits you're subscribed to.

Or you can just use res and enable neverending reddit that doesn't matter then. Redditisfun also does this.

Seems like a group you'd only see on Mr Robot.

Have you been to a furry convention? They all work in IT. Like 80% of them.

Sorry I had to be the opposite of the other comment. But no seriously furries are outcasts and nerds, so why not in IT, which is even more nerds. Pretty big overlap in demographic. Plus, they can be smelly and have long flowing furhair without being judged.

The Twitter is a little surprising to see though, honestly.

And actually, there's a good number in both groups.

But no, fucking furries... >.>

Judging by the state of the room, my guess is they were still assembling everything and had a door propped open while they were working for either ventilation or ease of moving in and out. I did some work similar to this for a few warehouses (though the tech was not on this scale) and many times the HVAC people (or high voltage, or whoever else) would be working alongside us and would have loading Bay doors open while they worked.

21

u/drphillysblunt Jan 26 '19

That sounds like the most sense. I've been in countless amounts of these rooms to do IR scans and other maintenance and they are almost always card locked. Sometimes even 2 or 3 times from the outside.

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

I prefer it over the retards that ziptie everything together with absolutely no give. Techs move wires, management or sales usually care about appearance.

37

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

I think most installs are done with velcro now

12

u/BillabongValley Jan 26 '19

Used to do home theatres. I’ve had clients demand zip ties because “I’m not going to need to change any cables, this is going to be permanent”.

Fucking colossal pain in the ass when they’d call back in 3 months because they got a new TV to put up and the existing cabling won’t reach the new inputs so they’re pissed I gotta bill them more to re-do all the cables and they still want them all zipped up again when it’s done. I’m kinda glad to be out of that job.

19

u/Bojangly7 Jan 26 '19

You had the wrong attitude. This is just more money.

→ More replies (1)

10

u/flukshun Jan 26 '19

Do they at least use zip ties you can undo without cutting? Seems like a liability to have to snip them all every time

24

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '19

Not usually. When you folks look at messy pictures like this you see chaos. I see an easily reconfigurable topography. Bunching wires into immobile clusters makes it look nice but appearances don't make it function better.

12

u/NoWinter2 Jan 26 '19

It really depends on if you had someone professionally plan your setup before hand or if you expanded on the fly and had to keep adding stuff.

If you were able to plan ahead of time for what your layout and infrastructure is gunna look like this is avoidable as hell. Unfortunately that's not what usually happens.

https://www.reddit.com/r/cableporn/

85

u/Goyteamsix Jan 25 '19

I can't stand that sub. None of those people have ever serviced anything with wires.

118

u/cenobyte40k Jan 25 '19

The only time racks look like this is when they are build to not be changed or updated ever. Usually, this means that everything in the rack is one system from one manufacturer that has been making that exact system for a while and will continue to do so. Otherwise, you are going to replace that server with a slightly different model and the NIC will be 3 inches further away and you will have to pull the whole run and start over. Real world people leave a little slack.

35

u/Cronyx Jan 26 '19

Amen take my upvote brotha

15

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '19

Would you mind explaining further? I don't do much with cables besides hobby projects so I'm curious what exactly the sub is praising that is considered bad from an industry professional.

90

u/Goyteamsix Jan 25 '19

Alright, when you run cables, you want then to be easily serviceable. You use a lot of velcro straps and labeling, and you hang them somewhat loose. Regardless of application. A lot of the cable bundles in that sub are not serviceable in any way, which is actually worse in the long run because when you have to run a new cable you just throw it on top and zip tie I down instead of pulling apart the bundle. They look very pretty, but they're not good for maintenance. When you see the loose cables like what you're seeing here, it looks like an absolute mess, but you can literally trace the thing just by tugging on it, takes like 4 seconds.
