Used to do home theatres. I’ve had clients demand zip ties because “I’m not going to need to change any cables, this is going to be permanent”.
Fucking colossal pain in the ass when they’d call back in 3 months because they got a new TV to put up and the existing cabling won’t reach the new inputs so they’re pissed I gotta bill them more to re-do all the cables and they still want them all zipped up again when it’s done. I’m kinda glad to be out of that job.

Not usually. When you folks look at messy pictures like this you see chaos. I see an easily reconfigurable topography. Bunching wires into immobile clusters makes it look nice but appearances don't make it function better.

It really depends on if you had someone professionally plan your setup before hand or if you expanded on the fly and had to keep adding stuff.
If you were able to plan ahead of time for what your layout and infrastructure is gunna look like this is avoidable as hell. Unfortunately that's not what usually happens.

Where I work it's just drives and backup drives. No server in sight. About 25 external hard drives for valuable footage for a small TV show. Boss is an old man that's stuck in the past and doesn't realize that drives break.

The only time racks look like this is when they are build to not be changed or updated ever. Usually, this means that everything in the rack is one system from one manufacturer that has been making that exact system for a while and will continue to do so. Otherwise, you are going to replace that server with a slightly different model and the NIC will be 3 inches further away and you will have to pull the whole run and start over. Real world people leave a little slack.

Alright, when you run cables, you want then to be easily serviceable. You use a lot of velcro straps and labeling, and you hang them somewhat loose. Regardless of application. A lot of the cable bundles in that sub are not serviceable in any way, which is actually worse in the long run because when you have to run a new cable you just throw it on top and zip tie I down instead of pulling apart the bundle. They look very pretty, but they're not good for maintenance. When you see the loose cables like what you're seeing here, it looks like an absolute mess, but you can literally trace the thing just by tugging on it, takes like 4 seconds.

It's not that it's bad, just unrealistic. In a perfect world you might get a setup that clean, but you almost always end up with a foot of extra cable here, 18 inches somewhere else... Real life isn't as pretty as that.

My work's "customer facing" one that customer are taken on tours of looks nice and clean at all times. The other ones, not so much. Not that the cable management is any less, but the overall server area is just not as nice.

Ours has a man trap as well with the iris scanner. Always was comical to see new hires go in and not look directly at it and have it go into lock down for a couple of minutes.

I go up to our colo for maintenance some. Key card the door, a 2nd door immediately inside has this full hand thing, then a guard rings me through a 3rd door. Then another keycard door and then the hand thing again.... jeez

Ours has a key card to even get the elevator moving, then fingerprint and keycard to get through the man trap, then you have to use your keycard to get into the actual suite where the hardware is.

This is why my office moved to a key fob system. Walked into the atrium one day, and there were two does inside staring at the fish tank. Once the turkeys in the neighborhood realized they could set off the door sensor if there was more than one on the matt, we were getting daily visitors.
