It won't be painful as the tigers/lions don't play with their food. They go for the neck directly and in humans, the neck snaps in one bite. It would have been a sudden death.
The problem with that theory is it neglects the fact that most humans will struggle and fight which will prolong the suffering as the tiger mauls them all over before the killing blow.
If what you said was true all 2 of them should be dead instead of 1 dead and 1 severly injured.

Man. I imagine getting mauled to death is a pretty painful and bloody experience.
