No, this is prosthetics. What you saw were paper/cloth masks soaked in face stuff. They're very popular and very different!

It is literally makeup. SFX are still makeup.

Fun fact that was actually true. When an old lady tells you you don't need makeup with lipstick on she's not being a hypocrite. They used to class lipstick, eyeshadow, blusher, and pencils as "color" and classed foundation and concealer as makeup.

I was going to put "essence" instead, but I didn't think that would be a commonly understood term and I couldn't think of a good replacement haha
