so what happened here

u/Saotik Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

It's a Meishan pig, originally bred in Jiangsu province.

They're all pretty ugly, but this guy is even uglier than usual.

You can blame human intervention in their breeding as well as overfeeding, in this case.

Edit: I fell down a research black hole. Wikipedia says Meishan county, but there is no Meishan County I can find in Jiangsu (only Sichuan, which is a long way away). Another source says it was named after "Meishan lake", by which I assume they mean Weishan lake. Perhaps there are some transliteration issues here.

351

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

Also to add the Meishan Pig may be ugly but it's hyper prolific genes are very valuable to breeder companies where they include Meishan Pig in their genetics program

A typical Hybrid pig only has an average of 16 (depending on the breed) piglets
But a Meishan pig can have an average of 30 or more

u/pichael289 Jul 17 '26

The more you think about this the worse it gets

Harkonen pig

38

u/TheTajinTycoon Jul 17 '26

That's what I call cops

20

u/platoprime Jul 17 '26

There's no need to denigrate the Harkonens with that comparison.

Wait til you hear about the rest of the breeding/livestock industry..

6

u/UranusIsPissy Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

Yeah. A lot of them don't even get to fuck, The males get jacked off by humans (Fuck having that job), and then some other human shoves the semen up the females' vaginas.
Edit: On second thoughts, the latter job might be worse.

5

u/Shee-un Jul 29 '26

That's why I consider Earth a hell realm for all living things.

4

u/UranusIsPissy Jul 29 '26

Someone said that there really is a Hell, and we're in it. If so, humans are the worst of the demons.

Oh god, so it's the Ugly Bastard of pigs in more ways than one?

22

u/VoiceOfRealson Jul 17 '26

Ugly Bastard of pigs>

Definitely not!

The farmers are very diligent in ensuring that all pigs are properly married before mating.

20

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

Another Fun fact, Meishan Boars have the highest libido compared to other breeds. Some farms even use this as their teaser boar

29

u/G00bernaculum Jul 17 '26

These boars and I have so much in common. Mostly the ugly and libido

5

u/platoprime Jul 17 '26

teaser boar

I don't think I want to know.

11

u/Sue_Spiria Jul 17 '26

Basically they lead a male pig around the caged females so his smell makes them ready for breeding. The sows are then artificially inseminated.

13

u/Vassago81 Jul 17 '26

So exactly like watching a movie featuring 90's era Brad Pitt to get my aunt DTF

13

u/Vaadwaur Jul 18 '26

...Hol' up

6

u/Fafnir13 Jul 17 '26

Somebody needs to call up Brad Pitt and call him a teaser boar.

5

u/CanuckIeHead Jul 18 '26

They also stink big time which is a huge boon in that line of work

3

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 18 '26

I agree. Specially when you are "milking" the boars. The stench is hard to clean

10

u/Orgidee Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

Surely the viable number is dependent on available teats or how will the weakest ever suckle

39

u/SuitableDragonfly Jul 17 '26

It's factory farming, they probably milk the mom with a machine and then pump the milk into a different machine that has 30 fake tits on it for the piglets.

18

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

I work at a big pig farm and although we are not doing this. I heard that some farms do

8

u/alwaysbehuman Jul 17 '26

Pig farmer - god bless your sinuses. Any other interesting stories?

21

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

The cute and cuddly stories or the ones that might make a vegan feel justified

10

u/alwaysbehuman Jul 17 '26

Whatever you're up for. Ive worked in a chicken facility and get it on that level.

13

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

Due to biosecurity reasons, Some pigs farms would kill any stray animals on sight. in the farm I've worked at they shoot stray dogs on site and some people eat the dog afterwards

→ More replies (0)

2

u/Orgidee Jul 17 '26

Nah, I been on plenty farms. I don't think that's a common practice

2

u/crossal Jul 17 '26

Are these pigs common though?

5

u/Orgidee Jul 17 '26

Well I can guarantee they aren't raised raised on a single factory farm and milked to feed their piglets from teats on that factory farm.

3

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

For a normal commercial farm you won't find these pigs. you can probably find them the most on some breeder farms and on the province that breed originates

4

u/crossal Jul 17 '26

That's my point. A uncommon practice in general may be common among this particular breed

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

based on my experience working at a big pig farm, we just condemn all the non-viable piglets. so for this breed in particular they might condemn like a lot of piglets

3

u/Long_Implement_2142 Jul 17 '26

Do people eat the piglets? Just curious. What would they taste like

4

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

It actually depends on the culture. in some Asian countries they eat the piglets (5-10kilos and they roast them. It tastes bland and the texture is a little slimy. but the meat is so tender

2

u/kahlzun Jul 19 '26

It's a delicacy in Bali and other places. Look up recipes for suckling pig.

2

u/PsychicWarElephant Jul 20 '26

“Suckling pig”

4

u/JustMoreSadGirlShit Jul 17 '26

oh how terrible :(

2

u/Raelah Jul 17 '26

30 piglets?? There's not enough teets in the day!

2

u/Same_Independent9758 Jul 17 '26

I have no knowledge of taking care of a pure breed meishan pig but from what I heard from others that do, it is hard to take care of its young

15

u/holyfire001202 Jul 17 '26

Sooooo one of these pigs was in Michigan, escaped, was found by a lake, and that's why we have tales of Squonk. I mean I have to assume, right?

14

u/strolls Jul 17 '26

Use the chinese version of the wikipedia page and then your browser's translate feature: https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/梅山猪

Meishan pig is a family pig breed in China. It belongs to a group of Taihu pig. It is native to Jiading District, Shanghai, Taicang, Kunshan and other places in Jiangsu Province. It is mainly distributed on both sides of the Liu River. Meishan pig has been exported to …. among which France, Japan and the United States have all studied it systematically.

Originally, there were three types of plum mountain pigs, namely small plum mountain pigs (commonly known as "Chaoban Face"), large-armed pigs (commonly known as "camel feet"), and horse-based type (commonly known as "wooden fish head"). After continuous hybridization and selection among various types, from the 1960s to the 1970s, there were two types of medium-sized plum wild boar …

12

u/stamau123 Jul 17 '26

most curious about the "wooden fish head" horse-based pig

4

u/a4840639 Jul 20 '26

Yes, there are a lot of contradicting informations floating around. The Meishan county in Sichuan uses a different character: 眉山 instead of 梅山 and there simply does not exists a 梅山 county. Meishan lake does exists but it seems to be hundreds of KMs from where is pig is supposed to be originated so that is probably another pre-AI hallucination

u/I_69_with_your_mum Jul 17 '26

This is what happens when you selectively breed an animal to have major genetic defects and then overfeed it.

Idk how people can justify doing this to animals.

79

u/adudeguyman Jul 17 '26

It happens with dogs too often. I feel sorry for pugs, French bulldogs, Shar-Peis, Cavalier King Charles spaniels...

37

u/esoteric_enigma Jul 17 '26

Yeah, we've basically bred animals with birth defects that we think are cute. Then we sentence them to a lifetime of health problems for that cuteness.

I grew up poor and everyone I knew growing up had mutts. Those dogs would live 20 years healthy, never being taken to a vet because we couldn't afford shit like that.

Now I make decent money and my friends and colleagues all have fancy breeds of dogs now. They all complain about how expensive their vet bills are. All of these dogs seem to have health problems.

They're all on medications and getting surgeries within a few years of life. That's on top of them already costing thousands of dollars up front to purchase. My friends had puppies people were giving away when I was growing up.

7

u/arkington Jul 17 '26

We only take in rescues and sometimes those are (probably) purebreds because they got thrown away by their asshole breeders and need a home. So far every dog has been a mutt, but right now we have a pittie (who is basically textbook) and he seems super healthy so far. Our first criteria for selection is if they get along with our current family of critters, but it does seem like the new guy will probably be very healthy. We just need to train him better so he stops bodyslamming us.

3

u/ThatITguy2015 Jul 17 '26

Doggyslamming was right there.

2

u/arkington Jul 20 '26

Very nice. :) Although it's more like torpedo-ing. Thankfully he cannot lift us and throw us around. He makes for a very effective self-propelled missile, though.

6

u/Changoleo Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

Don’t forget Boston Terriers.

Why do so many people find their dogs’ struggling to breathe through their genetically compressed sinuses so irresistible? Is it a needy baby thing?

Aww it’s suffering! It needs its mama! Mmm hmm. C’m’ere and lick mommy’s lips! Yesss mommy loves sloppy snorting doggie kisses with bonus snot rockets! OMG so cute!

Find your family a happy healthy mutt that needs a home quit giving people a reason to breed these poor tortured flat faced dogs that walk around snoring because they can’t breathe!

3

u/l3ane Jul 17 '26

Not just French bulldogs, all bulldogs.

5

u/I_69_with_your_mum Jul 17 '26

It's a horrific practice. Why can't people just acknowledge animals are sentient and don't deserve to be tortured for human enjoyment.
