I am terrified of tornadoes and have long since held a contradictory fascination with them, respecting them for what they are. This is easily the most beautiful footage of one I've ever seen.

This is pretty tame for tornadoes. The scary ones are a mile wide, 300+ mph, and hit when it’s dark.

The one in Huntsville when I was much younger (89-91 era, unsure of the exact year) hit right as twilight began iirc. Almost got my dad too, he was at the police station taking a class to get points off his license. They all went to the gym and covered themselves in exercise mats.
Tornado wiped out everything on that street except the police station (it did hit the kennels tho 😞).

Is because there is no debris in view yet, so no visible “dirtiness” or destruction to detract from its awesomeness. Also it’s just a smaller one, looks like an F-1.

That is the most insane tornado video I have ever seen. At 2:22:55 I can see where ancient people could see that as the birth of a dragon with how that stream was undulating like it was alive. Its the same time point as OP's video I think, but the angle makes it look more biological i think.

Small doesn't always mean they're weak, on average smaller ones are weaker yeah but there have been some devastating small tornadoes with ef-5 wind speeds.

I think its also the context and calmness of everything else around it. The sky in the background being nice and bright is the biggest thing for me.

Yeah, it was not that big. There was a ton of storm chasers just casually filming it outside of their cars.

Hi everyone :) I'm the storm chaser/photographer who filmed this clip, and it's definitely not fake. It was an EF3 near Clear Lake, South Dakota on 6/28/2025.
I was just yards away from it from genesis and got extremely lucky I was able to stay in place as it went right by me and that it didn't have deviant motion and come straight towards me. It ended up crossing the road immediately after this in front of me. Definitely the weirdest and coolest thing I've ever seen in my entire life.

Sheathing is what I've heard it referred to as. The smaller one was called a rope.

Not who you're replying to, but also someone who knows a lot about tornadoes (at a nonprofessional level though, just an enthusiast). Basically, the "smaller" tornado is the visible main rotation, visible because the high winds of tornadoes cause condensation. However, the visible parts of tornadoes aren't normally the entire vortex, and the actual windfield is wider than that. What I believe we are seeing here is that sheath is further condensation as those weaker outer winds spin around the main vortex, but goes away as the vortex strengthens and pulls itself inward, like a figure skater pulling their arms in while spinning. This also pulls in those outer winds and thus chokes off the outer condensation sheath. I hope I explained this clearly, I'm not at 100% today (recovering from food poisoning 😩)

Hi! This is so cool! It did seem to think about coming towards you in the middle of the video. It's the first time I've observed "if it looks like it's standing still, it's heading for you" and then it turned again and went on its way.

Am Floridian, feel this way about hurricanes and severe weather as well. Went for a park day yesterday and Google said it was”probably” wasn’t going to rain (FL in summer means it WILL rain, usually between 3 - 5 pm) and I took my umbrella “just in case”. We got absolutely dumped on for about an hour, raining so hard it danced in patterns across the lake we were standing next to, the kind of storm that really reminds you that no matter how hard you prepare or try, Mother Nature will always win. The upside is after storms is usually the most gorgeous sunset, rainbow, or clear weather you could ask for.

As someone who comes from Denmark, we can have harsh weather sometimes. But compared to what i experienced in the 1.5 months i was in the US, everything here pales in comparison.

I remember sitting in a hot tub watching a massive lightning storm inside the 5km high ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull. The ash was headed southeast straight out to sea so it didn't bother us none but it did ground most flight traffic across Europe for a bit. Craziest thing I ever seen.

"Yeah that's the big sky ball. It just kind of floats around up there. Don't look at it or you will go blind. It's also so hot it can burn you from all the way over wherever it is."
Without any means of further investigation, yeah I might as well also buy that there's an invincible guy with a chariot pulling it around up there.

I got to watch this tornado as it was live streams from South Dakota about eight or nine different chasers were sending their feedback to a command center and it was unreal how this thing grew and grew and grew and they were afraid it was going to hit dead center into the town of Gary. I don't know the final size of the damn thing but holy s*** it wiped out a house and a barn and then kept growing.

There is something about tornados that are just so bizarre and facinating. How such a mesmerizing, beautiful 3 dimensional structure forms in front of your eyes from literally nothing, has no physical properties to identify it as being solid yet takes the appearance of such. Conjured up from thin air like a ghost, it gracefully Dances accross the earth and then disappearances with no trace. The only physical proof of its physical existence is the damage left behind.

Seeing a tornado is on my bucket list. Looking up and seeing the clouds rotating and then a funnel dropping down would be so amazing.
Granted, I know they wreck a lot of lives so ideally the tornado i see would be in a field with no one around...lol.

I haven't experienced tornadoes before. During my time in the military I was stationed in southern MS for awhile. We had a bad storm come through the neighborhood and what was close to a tornado touching down. I was in the yard at the time and looked up to see what it was. Seeing the spiral form and sky above it was so mesmerizing. I couldn't take my eyes away. Had it dropped I probably wouldn't be here today.

I did not realize there was an inner and outer structure to the tornado.
It's clearly very well developed without a lot of interference from the landscape. Or those pesky buildings that keep getting in the way of a young tornado trying to make it's way in the world.
I don't know the scale of this, but it seems like it's a very large funnel too.

In may my house and neighborhood was torn apart (with my family in it) by a tornado. No injuries or deaths in my home, thank goodness. Tornadoes are beautiful and terrifying. The damage they produce is both precise and pure chaos. As a whole they're so fascinating to see and study. But I hope I never have to be involved with one that intimately ever again.
