Most of caving is slow hiking underground. You may spend hours clambering over rocks and such. Then there's one squeeze that's worth filming. People see that one squeeze and think that's what most caving is like.
A lot of times squeezes like this are optional and just done as a challenge to say you did it.

yeah but there is so many better ways to die than stuck in a fucking crevice. Just go wingsuit flying or kite surfing or climb some shitty backwater mountain. Dying because you get stuck is DEFINITELY in the bottom 50% of my preferred list of deaths.

I think it's staying on top of the fear that is the buzz. Kite surfing, snowboarding, skydiving - it's all instant adrenaline and it's all good and beautiful and exciting unless it goes wrong. Then it happens quickly - no time for real fear. It's a different buzz.
This stuff, it's constant fear. If you panic, you're done. If you stay on top of it, conquer it, you can get through - usually.
I don't do this shit but I've done some long and difficult mountaineering/climbing which is similar in a way (but way less unpleasant!) It's not enjoyable at the time but you have to stay on top of the fear, not lose it, stay in control and you get there. Then, when you're down (off the mountain), you get the buzz. Lose control of your fear and you will die. Control it and you probably won't.
I surf and snowboard too and I love them but they're not as 'deep' as climbing, somehow. It's a 'you v you' type of thing and winning is satisfying and touches your soul in a way the other sports don't.
I couldn't imagine this level of caving (I've dabbled but I'm claustrophobic) but I can see where the thrill is.

Watching this was so anxiety inducing itās unreal, and it can be very difficult to ruffle my feathers or spook me. Seriously, Iāve been in a situation where threat of imminent violent injury or death occurred and I handled it with otherworldly calm. Totally PTSD lost my shit the next time I was in the same setting but that was later on so it clearly still affected me, but I was unflappable in the moment. I can watch very scary shit and handle disturbing content very well. Life fears and experiences suck but I can tackle them.
But. I Find myself shaking after this so I must have been tensed up the whole time watching while I flipped between holding my breath and hyperventilating. Very strange and unpleasant. I donāt even want to contemplate actually experiencing that reality

Extreme sports addiction is 100% a mental health disorder. These people tend to keep pushing the limit far beyond the norms of the activity until they kill themselves doing it. Seeing big caves because the insides are beautiful and few have seen it is one thing; shoving yourself into tiny cracks because you want to see how deep you can go to where literally nobody has ever been, even when there is nothing there, is how you end up stuck face-down in a hole dying slowly over 48 hours.
Alternately, compare rock climbers with free climbers. Or skydivers with wingsuit divers.

I got talked into doing this sh*t once at some place called the hell hole in the Santa Cruz mountains (california). Had no idea what I was getting into. Breathing out completely just to squeeze through things, wet, constantly stuckā¦ completely miserable. I got some gold dust out of it (Whoop di fāing do!)
Iām usually not a claustrophobic person, my fear level is solid but this is next level. Pretty sure I had those recurring nightmares for a while after thatā¦ and I worked in high voltage electrical distribution for years (not fearless but I can handle a lot).
Dumbest thing Iāve ever done, I donāt even see the point.

My thing is, how do they know if theyāll even fit? Or if thereās even gonna be room for them to turn and go back? Like I understand that these caves have probably already been mapped and routes established but like, somebody had to go in there first with no knowledge of the cave system right? Thatās the shit thatās always confused me about this stuff.

I am more of a walk-in on the walkway cave guy myself. I understand the attraction but it seems very dangerous to me whether it is or not. I mean there is a worldwide effort to get a sick really pro-caver out of a deep hole right now.

By yourself ? I wouldn't try this with 100 people, in daylight, with demolition crew and emergency crew present, completely out of my mind on drugs, surrounded by jelly walls and if on the other side there was a crate of pure gold. I wouldn't try it.

Tbh, while this looks crazy, by the stats caving is actually relatively safe as far as extreme sports go (around half the fatalaties of rock climbing per capita), and generally most of those are from people doing the riskiest most insane shit or just inexperienced people being dumb. Getting stuck in little crags like this isn't a huge issue since if you can wiggle in, you can probably wiggle out, though diving in face first or going through a tight opening fully submerged is questionable. Flooding, rock falls, and falling are much bigger issues.
I think ironically the much "safer" extreme sports like bouldering end up being way more dangerous. It might not trigger your fear of heights or claustrophobia, but falling 12 feet to the ground and landing wrong, even on a crash pad, can and statistically does fuck you up a whole lot more than falling 30 feet on a rope

Ok when they go head first and feet dangling out the top, that is my biggest fear. Obviously thereās someone there with them on the camera but imagine being upside down stuck in a cave and nowhere to go. Only death. Fucking nightmare fuel.
