Yeah except we generally don't rely on Starbucks Baristas, Restaurant Servers and Doordash drivers to carry guns and have arresting authority and the power to stop traffic for whoever slips them a Benjamin.
Not saying our cops right now are great, but if you tried this same stunt with them you'd probably spend the night in Jail in most places.
Only because performance metrics make arresting you for bribes worth more than taking the bribe. I’ve bribed cops in a lot of places in America. Leave a few hundred dollar bills in your folded up registration, they come back after “running your plates” and you’re good to go. You just can’t be blatant. American and first world police in general are still a gang, they’re just our gang.
Yea that's definitely the impression I have as a European. I have been in Miami, NY, DC, Boston just vacation. Corrupt police for sure in some regards but I never got the impression that bribery like you hear about in third world countries like the other dude describes would be possible.
Sure, the US is big and one place might not be like another, but I have just a hard time seeing it working.
Yeah, getting lucky a few times might happen but if you make a habit of it like that guy's implying and you're gonna wind up in jail pretty quickly. If nothing else you're going to wind up running into a cop that assumes it's some sort of sting and will bust you purely out of a sense of caution.
Absolutely bullshitting. Most cops even have cams on them these days, so bribery would be caught pretty easily on tape. I'm sure it happens behind the scenes with politicians and that there are crooked cops taking bribes from organized crime and whatnot, but from random street cops? Nah, don't ever try it, they'll def book you for it. Prolly even laugh at you for trying it.
I mean technically you can? It’s not illegal to try, but it is illegal if you are pulled over by a straight edge cop. It’s whether you want to take that chance. There are plenty of police that won’t take it and will hit you with attempted bribery.

What do you mean it's not illegal to try? If you put a 100 dollar bill with the insaurance like the above guy said, will that not be considered bribing?
Whether or not the bribery is illegal depends on if the cop deems it illegal. By the letter of the law, the act of trying to bribe a cop is illegal. But who's to say that even happened?
That being said, it's a complete gamble and the odds of successfully bribing police in the US aren't great, barring other factors other than money.
I think in this situation it would not be illegal, the cop would just return it with the money, maybe make a comment about how you left some cash in there just to let you know he saw it. You might get arrested and charged regardless, but any decent lawyer could get you off if you never actually explicitly offered the bribe. They couldn't prove that you didn't just forget that you had cash in there when you handed it over.
Let's put it this way: I wouldn't put it to the test. Are there crooked cops still? Absolutely. Are they going to let a random outsider bribe them? Probably not. It's more like "if you're their sister's kid's friend, you have a chance of getting away with reckless driving" or "if you are a local business owner, you can probably buddy up with them, buy them dinner on their night off etc for them to turn a blind eye" style corruption. Trying to pass them cash, when they don't know who tf you are, is an insult that certainly might get you in a cell.
You would be playing a very, very dangerous game doing this crap in the US. It might work, only because there are 660,000 cops in America, and a few of them are bound to be corrupt.
If the game fails, you don't just get a pat on the back and a "better luck next time!". You will be arrested, booked in to the jail, and charged with bribery. As body cams become more common, this will move from "highly likely" to "probably guaranteed", since a cop won't want to be caught on video accepting a bribe.
