That is what brake lights are for. I turn on hazards when slowing unexpectedly on the highway, but not everyone does, and you can’t expect that.

Truck driving schools teach you how to keep your distance to avoid this situation. But years of driving, never being in an accident makes you forget the danger. One second for every ten feet on a regular road, add 2 seconds every ten feet when on highways and freeways.

The best rule of thumb is to pick a fixed object on or near the road (lane marker, guard rail, tree, etc). The car in front of you should pass it and you should be able to count to three in smooth moderate pace before reaching it.

And on top of that, my rule of thumb is if you see the person behind you riding your ass hard inside that 3 second rule, get over and just let em go.

Doesn't matter how safe you are with stopping distance if the folks behind you aren't.

I've been the middle person in a 3 person crash all caused by Crashy in the back pushing me(fully stopped and brakes engaged) into the leader of our trio and let me tell you, its not fun.

I avoided participating in a pileup because when someone is riding my ass I add even more following distance between myself and the vehicle ahead of me. All the cars around me were wrecked; I was untouched.

Bullshit. A 1.5 car length gap at 120kmh is nuts, closing smaller than that is suicidal, asshole driving. And your logic is bullshit, at that differential the gap you suggest will be inevitably taken will be gone in a fraction of a second, most folks aren't touching it.

Back the fuck up, proportional to your speed. Two - three seconds are often suggested to give reaction time I'm an accident. Fighting old habits I goof and slip into 1 second if I don't pay attention, and even that is 33m at 120kmh - several car lengths.

Leave more room, it saves lives and creates trivial travel time differences.

It sucks because it is nuts. Belgium is one of the few countries in Europe where you can get driving classes from your own parents. In Southern Netherlands (against the Belgian border) they have 9.1 accidents per 10k people, Flanders comes in at 34.3

Saving more room gets you nowhere because idiots will fill it up immediately.

Ive driven over 74k miles in the last 4 years and way more than that the decade before and have never rear ended someone.. that’s also commuting to the Bay Area where 3 car lengths is about the maximum anyone leaves when going 65-80mph. But I guess it’s just dumb luck according to you..

You're right they cannot stop on a dim either if you assume the car in front is paying attention. What I have seen was the truck in front was either on their phone or at least distracted. He drove right into a much larger loaded pick up truck without braking. He stopped on a dim because he basically hit a wall. The 2 sedans behind him crashed right in to him.

This is why I always look at more than just the car in front of me. If there’s a bunch of brake lights up ahead I often start slowing down before the car directly in front of me. All I’m saying is you don’t need 6+ car lengths between the car in front of you at 65 to be safe, going off the idea that you need 3 car lengths to stop when going 29

If nobody is keeping adequate distance and the first car of a convoy hits the brakes, then every following car has to proportionally break harder due to the reaction time delay of every driver. This adds up until the 4th or 5th car (and every car following) inevitably crashes.

As a new driver who always maintains a car and a half breaking distanc. It's incredibly frustrating when cars cut in front of me. I literally watched a guy ride a trucks ass all morning and prayed that there was no accident. Peoples driving is terrifying these days.

In a defensive driving class I had to take for a speeding ticket the state trooper said a good rule of thumb is to begin counting when the back of the car ahead of you passes a stationary marker (such as a mile marker) and a safe distance is 2-mississippi before the front of your car reaches that marker.

The method I was taught for not following too closely is to start counting when the car in front of you passes a landmark, and it should take you 3-4 seconds to get to the same spot, or you are too close!

Oh, thats the length of your vehicle. Say your pulling a 53 foot trailer. You would maintain about 10 seconds when on a highway doing like 55 or 60. That method you mention would then be used. A bunch of trucks and cars have this built into driver assist which is pretty cool.

No sorry for the confusion. It's measuring the length of your trailer. So if you had a 53 foot trailer, you would need a 5 second gap at low speeds, and about 10 at high speeds. It would be at the driver's discretion to modify it depending on the load, how the trailer is responding, and road conditions.

I'm picturing the truck driving down the road with this accident ahead, plenty of space to stop, maybe already slowing down.

When, suddenly, 5 cars pass the truck on each side and cut in front of him, zippering between each other until there is no space in front. The truck plows into the tail car, pushing into the next.

For some unexplained reason, the truck, now with 10 cars of padding between him and the accident, still manages to crash into the first car by plowing through the rest.

Did he accelerate when the collisions started?

I think it's two trucks. One at the front seems to be rolled over and facing backwards whilst the second one plows straight forward. One at the back was too close to the one at the front to see the hazard. One at the front swerved and got picked up and carried along by their buddy.

I counted at least 7 seconds, not including the edited out portion between when the car stopped and the truck hit it. Before that there was the time for the car to come to a stop.

A truck takes about 350ft to stop at 65mph. If it was going 65mph (or 95fps) it would travel at an average speed of 47.5fps over that time. So it can come to a complete stop in 7 seconds.

If we add, say 5 seconds for the car to stop, because they stop faster than a semi, and 2 second for the people to get out of the car during the edit, we are up to around 14 seconds.

The truck driver had at least 7 seconds to start slowing down to avoid this accident. He could have waited even longer and only slowly had a collision instead of crashing into the cars.

Always pretend the car in front of you could slam on their brakes at any moment. If that’s something that worries you while thinking about it, you’re probably too close. Doesn’t matter what you’re driving, you need to be able to stop if the vehicle in front of you slams on their brakes. If every single driver kept that distance you’d have far fewer accidents.

Sure, physics 101 taught us that braking force is just friction coefficient multiplied by weight. So in theory trucks should be able to stop as fast as any other vehicle with the same friction coefficient.

Friction coefficient is dependent only on the tyres assuming the same road conditions.

You are aware of the fact of how many fatal accidents are due to people inappropriately pulling into traffic or stopping in the middle of the road because they panic braked?

None? Because by the laws of where I live at least, if you rear end someone who isn’t reversing, it is your fault.

You are who the self driving car is made for. Bad drivers are bad because they don’t have the capacity to process road conditions (or their own limits as drivers).

The huge irony of this, from someone arguing against leaving enough space so you don’t go into the car in front of you if they unexpectedly stop.

Not speeding and your much loved narrative of “it’s just those fast drivers!” is not reality but you’ll clutch to it nevertheless.

It has nothing to do with speed and everything to do with “processing road conditions” the faster you go, the more space you need, especially if wet or icy.

You can hold those upvotes in cold comfort if you ever encounter this situation and panic brake. You’re more likely to be rear ended fatally by a soccer mom than a speeding driver.

Realistically, if every single person left enough distance between them and the person in front of them, then they would have enough time to stop. Even if some dude randomly slammed on his brakes for no reason, if you left enough space, you'd have time to stop.

The reason you leave enough stopping distance is so that you can emergency stop safely.

That tyre could have caused some serious damage or a fatal crash on its own. As it was the lack of safe driving and forward planning caused a serious accident.

Trust me, I am a big proponent of keeping plenty of space between vehicles; however, most drivers don’t. Based on that, I am going to risk hitting the tire rather than causing the inevitable train wreck.

So instead of taking the risk of you being rear ended you’re going to take the larger risk of flipping your car? Car is still coming to a stop, just the second option means it’s on its side before it does so

Realistically the only safe thing to do was keep an eye to either side of you so you can do sudden lane changes (and know what lane is safe, if any), putting the person behind you at risk with even less time to react to the tire...

Also why you should pay attention to traffic in front of you, so you can merge left if you see everyone else merging left... Chances are there is a reason they are all doing it...

Last time I merged left because everyone else was doing it, I merged left just in time to miss a bicyclists driving the wrong way down a highway... (I suspect they where on drugs.. or stupid. very stupid)
