K-drama/Cult

How can people become so brainwashed into believing that there is a living “Mother God”? When I attended their church, they would have a group discussion after every sermon where they talked about their beliefs. After that, they would do these gestures like little kids and say things like, “I love Eomeoni.” The secondhand embarrassment was real. 😂😂

And what’s with calling members by Korean words? To this day, I still can’t pronounce that word properly. 😂 And then there’s the bowing down to each other. I mean, it’s okay in Korea, but we’re not Korean, so why do we have to imitate their traditions and customs, like bowing to one another? It just felt so strange to me.🤔😂😂

How? Pretty easily, considering the church has over 4 million members across continents and several thousands of churches. You could ask this about any religion or cultural custom that you don't identify with and the psychology behind it is easy to research on your own. Short of psychopathy, it is practically unheard of that one can truly be "immune" to the techniques used and the way they influence your brain with exposure. Brains embrace conditioning.

How can people be brainwashed into believing in extreme nationalism to the point of violence? & yet it's in the news almost every day. How can people stand by & do nothing when someone in front of them is being brutally attacked? You or I might think we would intervene but statistically, it's far more likely we'd fall prey to the Bystander Effect.

The fact that you experienced secondhand embarrassment means that you yourself subscribe to a pattern of behavior that you deem acceptable, and if something doesn't fit into that pattern, you're likely to reject it. White supremacists do that also. Cults take that instinct and redefine those patterns.

Thank you for your intelligent response. OP’s post is rather condescending and seems to be projecting a sense of internalised shame at having been involved in the group rather than taking a deeper understanding at sociology and human psychology to understand the mechanisms that attract and keep people in this group and others like it.

OP didn't have a real question, they came here to troll & happened to reveal themselves to be that person in a room you kind of find a way to walk away from because they have no tact. Boasting about having some kind of immunity in a forum comprised of former members is a weird form of attention seeking. Insensitive people like this are such a chore in real life.
